2 PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of justice, we confess that our actions are evil whenever we remain passive while others are oppressed; whenever we guard our own prosperity at the expense of those who are poor; or when we ignore the cries of those in need of help. Forgive us, we pray, for hiding in the darkness of this world more than loving the light of your righteousness made known to us in Jesus Christ. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You sent a star to guide wise men to where Christ was born; and your signs and witnesses in every age and throughout all the world have led your people from far places to your light. In his baptism and in his table fellowship, he took his place with sinners. In Christ, we have seen and heard the good news of God: the sick are healed, strangers are welcomed, the poor have hope, and the dead are raised to new life. We remember that on the night in which he gave himself up for us WORDS OF INSTITUTION And now remembering your gracious acts in Jesus Christ, We take from your creation this bread and this cup and joyfully celebrate his dying and rising, as we await the day of his coming. With thanksgiving, we offer our very selves to you to be a living and holy sacrifice, dedicated to your service. And we proclaim the great mystery of our faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us gathered here and upon these your gifts of bread and wine, that the bread we break and the cup we bless may be the communion of the body and blood of Christ. By your Spirit, unite us with Christ and with your church in all the world. Help us to grow in faith and love, as your people in Christ. Strengthen our hearts and teach us patience as we watch and pray for the coming go the Lord. Judy Johnson as our Guest Preacher! Rev. Johnson is a retired United Methodist pastor currently serving the Presbytery of Baltimore as a staff coach for the Wild, Wild West Ministry Group (Western Maryland) to encourage the development of spiritual leaders and thriving, reconciling congregations. Epiphany comes from the Greek word, epiphaneia and means appearance or manifestation of God. As early as the 3 rd century, the church observed the Feast of the Epiphany on the 12 th day of Christmas to celebrate the appearance of the Lord

6 in the midst of humanity. In today s gospel text, Jesus is revealed to the Gentiles (all the world), as represented by the visit of the Magi. Today s opening and closing voluntaries are from the pen of American organist, teacher, and conductor Richard Purvis ( ) A native of San Francisco, Purvis studied music in Philadelphia and England, before serving as an officer in the U. S. Army during WWII. After the war, Purvis served for 25 years as Organist and Choirmaster at San Francisco s famed Grace Cathedral. Benjamin Britten s A New Year Carol, written in 1934, is a stylized version of a British folk song of Welsh origin. The quaint and ostensibly perplexing words, likely refer to a New Year s Day custom in Pembrokeshire of children drawing water from a well, and sprinkling it by means of an evergreen bough on passersby, who would in turn give money or food. In the same way, the water was also used to bless the doors of homes and churches. Throughout some parts of Wales, the custom is known as dwr newy, or new water. 7 As there were in Old Testament times elders for the government of the people, so the New Testament church provided persons with particular gifts to share in discernment of God s Spirit and governance of God s people. Accordingly, congregations should elect persons of wisdom and maturity of faith, having demonstrated skills in leadership and being compassionate in spirit. Ruling elders are so named not because they lord it over the congregation (Matt. 20:25), but because they are chosen by the congregation to discern and measure its fidelity to the Word of God, and to strengthen and nurture its faith and life. Ruling elders, together with teaching elders (also known as Ministers of the Word and Sacrament), exercise GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS WELCOME VISITORS: We are glad you found your way to First Presbyterian Church of Cumberland. In addition, our "Young Children in Worship" pew card contains information about why young children should be encouraged to come to worship and how parents and others can engage them more fully in worship. FRIENDSHIP PADS: Please locate and sign the red pad in your pew, tear off the sheet and place it in the collection plate during the offering. This important practice allows us to be mindful of new folks and long-time members as well, and is a good way to learn (or remember) the names of those with whom you are seated.
