WORSHIP March 25, 2018 Palm Passion Sunday Gathering Around The Word For all its joyful hosannas, Palm Sunday is a day of contrasts. We hear it in the hymns, pivoting as they do between happy triumph and inevitable crucifixion. We see it in Jesus, as the ruler of the universe chooses to ride a borrowed colt. The contrast is clear in the destination, as the city that welcomes him will later scream for his blood. William G. Carter Opening Voluntary Variations on All Glory, Laud, and Honor Invitation to Discipleship Call to Worship One: Hosanna, ruler of all, creator of the world, All: Reclaim this suffering earth. One: Hosanna, righteous Jesus, saving Lord, All: Redeem us from sin s deadly grip. One: Hosanna, renewing Spirit, living Word, All: Restore to us the joy of your salvation. *Hymn 196 All Glory, Laud and Honor Introit (11 a.m.) Hosanna! Hosanna! Laura Farnell Combined Children s Choirs Hymn 197 (11 a.m.) please remain seated Hosanna, Loud Hosanna (Verses 1 & 3 only) *Hymn 645 Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above Proclaiming the Word Together Prayer for Illumination/Reflection Michael Burkhardt VALET WILL ICH DIR GEBEN ELLACOMBE MIT FREUDEN ZART One: Listen to the story he was going on a journey and the crowd One: Listen to the story he was going on a journey and the crowd

One: Listen to the story he was going on a journey and the crowd JESUS ENTRY INTO THE CITY One: After telling a parable, Jesus went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples ahead As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully, with a loud voice, for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying, All: Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven! Ride On, King Jesus (9:30 & 11 a.m.) The Sanctuary Choir Moses Hogan JESUS AND THE DISCIPLES GATHER AT THE TABLE One: Every day he was teaching the temple, and at night he would go out and spend the night on the Mount of Olives, as it was called For the Son of Man is going, as it has been determined, but woe to that one by whom he is betrayed! Then they began to ask one another, All: Which one of us could it be? Who would do this? Silent Prayer All: We confess, we have betrayed you, we have denied you. Lord, have mercy on us. Our lives are in your hands. *Hymn of Response 218 Ah, Holy Jesus (Verses 1 & 2 only) HERZLIEBSTER JESU One: A dispute also arose among them, saying: All: Which one of us will be regarded as the greatest? One: The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you; rather, the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. Invitation to the Table Great Prayer of Thanksgiving and the Lord s Prayer Communion of the Lord s Supper Communion Anthem Ave Verum Corpus The Sanctuary Choir W.A. Mozart

Music During Communion Chorale Prelude on O Sacred Head, Now Wounded, Opus 122, No. 10 Johannes Brahms *Hymn of Response 202 An Upper Room Did Our Lord Prepare (Verses 1 & 2 only) JESUS PRAYS ON THE MOUNT OF OLIVES One: He came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground. Hymn of Response 220 Go to Dark Gethsemane (Verses 1 & 2 only) REDHEAD 76 JESUS IS BETRAYED One: When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief One: When those who were around him saw what was coming they asked, All: Lord, should we strike with the sword? One: Then one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear One: And Peter went out and wept bitterly. Offertory The Cross of Calvary Seth Ordiway, soloist Charles Gounod One: Now the men who were holding Jesus began to mock him and beat him; they also blindfolded him and kept asking him; One: They kept heaping many other insults on him. When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, gathered together, and they brought him to their council. After they questioned him about being the Messiah, then the assembly rose as a body and brought Jesus before Pilate. One: They began to accuse him, saying, All: We found this man perverting our nation, forbidding us to pay taxes to the emperor, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king. One: Then Pilate asked him But they were insistent and said, All: He stirs up the people by teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began even to this place. One: When Pilate heard this Then they all shouted out together, All: Away with this man! Release Barabbas for us! One: Barabbas was a man who had been put in prison for an insurrection that had taken place in the city, and for murder. Pilate, wanting to

relase Jesus, addressed them again; but they kept shouting, All: Crucify, crucify him! One: But they kept urgently demanding with loud shouts that he should be crucified; and their voices prevailed. So Pilate gave his verdict that their demand should be granted. He released the man they asked for, the one who had been put in prison for insurrection and murder, and he handed Jesus over as they wished. *Hymn of Response 209 My Song Is Love Unknown (Verse 1 only) LOVE UNKNOWN One: Listen to the story he was going on a journey and the crowd trembled, asking: * *Benediction Closing Voluntary Fantasy in C Minor, BWV 537 Johann Sebastian Bach

The opportunity to walk the labyrinth will be available all of Holy Week in Jubilee Hall. Maundy Thursday - March 29 at 7:30 p.m. Maundy Thursday is believed to be the day Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with His disciples. The English word Maundy comes from the Latin mandatum, which means commandment. It was on the Thursday of Christ s final week before being crucified and resurrected that He said these words: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. (John 13:34) There will be a harpist playing for 30 minutes before the service for meditation. In this solemn service we will remember Jesus love for us by partaking in communion by Intinction, followed by the stripping of the chancel. Good Friday: March 30 at 7:30 p.m. The service of Tenebrae, a meditation on Christ s suffering, has been practiced since medieval times. The word tenebrae comes from the Latin meaning darkness. Through readings and music, we remember the somber events of Jesus last week. We ponder the depth of Christ s suffering through increasing darkness symbolizing the approaching darkness of Jesus death and the hopelessness of a world without God. Easter Family Breakfast and Egg Hunt, March 31 at 9:30 a.m.: Families and kids of all ages are invited to a special breakfast cooked by our Men s Breakfast group! Egg hunt will follow. Register at Easter Sunrise - April 1, 6:30 a.m. Pecan Grove: Rev. Kathy Lee-Cornell will lead this service, which includes communion. Easter Sunday Sanctuary Services: - April 1, 8, 9:30, 11 a.m. Rev. Matthew Ruffner will lead the Easter services in the Sanctuary. Music by the Sanctuary Choir. Overflow seating will be available in Jubilee Hall. Easter Sunday Worship at Five - April 1, 5 p.m., Founders Hall: Join us for joyful singing, fellowship time, and a good word of resurrection from Rev. Kathy Lee-Cornell. Shuttle Service on Easter Sunday: We will offer a round-trip shuttle service from 6:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. from and to St. Marks School (north of the church on Preston, just south of Royal Lane). Continuous drop-off and pick-up will be at Jubilee Plaza. There will be three shuttles running concurrently. The last pick-up from the church is at 12:45 p.m. The Flowering of the Cross - April 1: Bring flowers from home, make a flower, or use the flowers that will be available at the church to adorn the cross in Jubilee Plaza. The sixth century tradition of flowering the cross is a beautiful way to symbolize the new life that emerges from Christ s death on Good Friday. Worship Leaders/Flower Dedications Our preacher today is Rev. Matthew Ruffner. Steve Jobman is directing our Sanctuary Choir. Bradley Hunter Welch is the organist and Artist-in-Residence. Children s Choirs are under the direction of Associate Director of Music Michael Groff. Their accompanist today is Sarah Warnecke. Anné Hughes and Greg Farnsworth directed our Palm Passion reading.
