3 From the desk of our Pastoral Associate: 5 th Sunday in Ordinary Time B Today s first reading from the Book of Job showcases the futility, restlessness and troubled nights of the human condition. We consider these circumstances in the context of the story of Job: a patriarchal sheik, a holy and good man, blessed with an abundance of wealth, family and good fortune. In a heavenly court scene, Satan dares God to allow him to attack Job in the hope that he will loose faith. With God s permission, Satan afflicts the good man with every kind of calamity; loss of family, possessions, prolonged and painful illnesses and the degradation by friends and neighbors. All this tragedy is couched in the inattentiveness of a God, who seemed not to care. In today s gospel, through the perspective of Saint Mark, we have what we believe to be God s response to what has become known as the problem of innocent human suffering. Over the ages God s people have come to believe that our God came and continues to come to us, in the person of Jesus. He knows the harshness of life, because he is one of us. More than this, he sees tough times in the lives of people he loves, and is touched by their torment. He has come to release people from the demons that possess them, from the illnesses that undermine their lives. He has come to bring the reign of God, the reign of peace and fulfillment. He has come to heal the brokenhearted, to bind up their wounds. His liberating and healing power goes out to all those who approach him. As the gospel of Mark continually shows, Jesus has the power to face all evil and the demons of life and reign victorious in every encounter. The verses of the responsorial psalm parallel the first reading and gospel by contrasting human brokenness with the cosmic power of God. What has been destroyed, God rebuilds. Those who have been scattered, God gathers. Those who are lowly, God sustains. In singing this psalm, we tell the world what we have come to know: that into the midst of human suffering comes a compassionate God with power to change how things are. In the words of the great mystic Julian of Norwich, All things will be well. All things will be well. All manner of things will be well. The Feast of Saint Blaise is celebrated each year on February 3 rd. Blaise, was born in 316, probably of rich parents in Armenia, a nation in today s Middle East. Educated as a medical doctor, but noting the deplorable conditions of life and the seduction of the Armenian people to worldly pleasures he decided to become a physician of souls. As Bishop of Armenia, his sanctity and working of miracles attracted the attention of Christians, and thousands flocked to him for the cure of body and spiritual ills. Thought to be an insurrectionist by the Emperor Licinius, who ordered the immediate persecution of all Catholics, Blaise was captured. On the way to prison, Blaise encountered a woman, whose son was dying of throat disease. He cured the child. In prison he cured another boy with a fish bone in his throat. Saint Blaise has since become the patron saint for ills of the throat and also for the care and support of wildlife. This weekend we will have a communal blessing of throats as part of our final blessing. Baptism Preparation: All those having first babies baptized are asked to attend an informational class. Our next class will be held this Monday, February 5 th, at 6:00 p.m. in Saint Timothy Middle School. Sunday Readings, Study and Conversation: Every Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. in the Rectory there is a group who look at the readings for the upcoming weekend, study them and discuss how they relate to daily life in We are not scripture scholars, and everyone is welcome. Consider joining us for a very lively and informative hour. Homebound Pastoral Care: If you or someone you know would like to receive Holy Communion at home or while in the hospital, please call us. We have a team of care givers, who are most willing to be of assistance. RCIA: What does it mean to be a Catholic? Have you or someone you know ever asked that question? Have you ever thought about becoming a Catholic or learning more about the Catholic faith? We welcome inquiry and are happy to meet with anyone to offer suggestions about how those questions can become reality. Attention Parents: If you have a child in the 4 th Grade or up, and would like them to be Baptized, be prepared to receive the Eucharist (Holy Communion), now is the time to move forward. We are starting a new formation process for younger (ages 9-teen years) children. For more information on the above ministries, please contact Pat Piano at or via at patriciaannpiano@comcast.net Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick On Sunday, February 11 th, at the 10:30 a.m. Mass we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The Church believes and confesses that among the seven sacraments there is one especially intended to strengthen those, who are being tried by illness, The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. This sacred anointing was instituted by Christ as a true and proper sacrament of the New Testament. From ancient times in the liturgical traditions of both East and West, we have testimonies to the practice of anointing of the sick with blessed oil. Over the centuries this sacrament was conferred more exclusively on those at the point of death, because of this it received the name Extreme Unction. Since the Second Vatican Council, this sacrament is given to those, who are seriously ill, by anointing them on the forehead and hands with duly blessed oil pressed from olives or from other plants saying, only once: Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up. Catechism of the Catholic Church nos. 1511, 1512, 1513 We believe that this sacrament confers special blessings on all those who are suffering from grave illness or old age. It may be repeated if an illness worsens. If you or someone you know could benefit from this anointing please come to the church 15 minutes ahead of time to be seated in the reserve section in the front of the church. It would be helpful if you know ahead of time that you are coming; call Pat Piano at the rectory( ) and tell us of your interest.

4 Super Bowl Sunday Bake Sale The Confirmation Classes will sponsor a bake sale this weekend after each Mass. The proceeds will benefit the Catholic Charities Open Arms to Immigrants. Please support our teens. Gluten free treats will be available. For additional information, please contact Diane Whittemore at whittemorediane@yahoo.com Formerly Blessed Palms In preparation for Ash Wednesday, The Church of Saint Timothy will, once again, be collecting your blessed palms in the vestibule baskets. Eucharistic Adoration will be held every Wednesday at The Church of Saint Timothy from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Grant that I may be renewed by your Eucharistic presence here on earth Prayer of Adoration and Petition Liturgical Guidelines to Protect the Faithful Against the Flu With the particularly severe incidences of the flu, the following guidelines are offered with the approval of the Archbishop: 1. If a pastor feels it is warranted, he may advise parishioners to exchange the Sign of Peace with a verbal greeting alone, or with a bow instead of a handshake. 2. Priests, deacons, and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion should be especially careful to practice good hygiene. Ministers of Holy Communion should always wash their hands before Mass begins; a further precaution suggests using an alcohol-based anti-bacterial solution before and after distributing Holy Communion. 3. The distribution of the Precious Blood to the faithful may be suspended if the pastor believes it is warranted, with the possible exception of communion from the chalice for those who, for medical reasons, cannot consume the host. 4. Parishioners should be reminded that if they are ill or suspect they are ill with a contagious illness, they are not bound by the Sunday Mass obligation. They should remain at home and return to church when they are well. And if they attend, and feel ill, they should be instructed not to receive from the chalice. 5. Additional precautions should be taken in the maintenance of churches and church halls, in particular the disinfecting of areas or items which come into contact with hands, such as handrails, restroom areas, and the tops of pews. Worldwide Marriage Encounter "For the world in its preset form is passing away. If change in our lives is our lot, let us learn how to change with and for our spouses by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The next Connecticut Weekend is July 6 th -8 th.
