3 From the Desk of our Pastoral Associate: 11 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Over the years our parish has been privileged to host biblical scholar, Professor Wayne Rollins as a speaker for our ongoing Adult Education Program to deepen our understanding of scripture. The parables of Jesus are one of his areas of expertise. Anyone can understand parables, said Professor Rollins, because Jesus never uses religious language; instead he talks about those things that we are familiar with; camels, seeds, farmers, a box buried in a field, a man out of a job. A recurring theme throughout the gospel parables is the Kingdom of God (KOG). This Sunday, the 11 th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we hear two of Jesus parables that speak about that kingdom. The scene is Jesus trying to explain to his disciples why there is so little progress in establishing the KOG. The first parable, tells of a seed growing to harvest (Mark 4: 26-29). Using the seed metaphor, Jesus makes several points about the KOG. First, there is no doubt that the seed will grow. Even though it may grow slowly, the harvest will come. Even though there is seeming inactivity on the part of the sower, without his knowing, the seed grows imperceptibly and irrepressibly to ripeness for the harvest. Patience and hope are necessary qualities for those who become involved with the reign of God. The growth of the believer, like the growth of the seed, is due to the one who created and sustained the believer in life. As Saint Paul said to the Corinthians, one plants, another waters but God gives the growth (1 Corinthians 3:6). In spite of the thorns of discouragement and even apathy, the growth of the seed (God s reign) is assured. The second parable for this weekend is the parable of the Mustard Seed (Mark 4: 30-34). Like the mustard seed plant, a nasty irrepressible weed that you can hardly kill, the KOG grows of its own power. All it takes is someone to plant it. One of the smallest seeds yet, when compared to what it becomes, a mighty shrub, it provides an apt metaphor for illustrating the results that may occur from insignificant beginnings. What could have been more insignificant than one gentle man without crown or armies or title or fame? What could have been less significant than a small group of unsure, unfunded and unknown disciples preaching an unpopular message to an unhearing populace (Mark 4: 30-32)? Given adequate care and good climate, the mustard shrub grows as high as eight to ten feet and provides a home for many birds. In the Jewish prophetic literature, the great sheltering tree was a symbol of a great empire offering protection and security to all peoples (Daniel 4: 7-21: Ezekiel 17: 23, 31: 1-9). Jesus understood his mission in those universal terms and Mark s church of the 60 s had begun to realize that the KOG was for gentiles as well as for Jews. 5 Saint Timothy Middle School News Student of the Week May 29th-June 1st As I contemplated my selection for Student of the Week, I couldn t help but reflect on my short time at St. Tim s. Many of you know I came from a high school environment, a different world than middle school. What I ve learned here at Saint Timothy is that middle school really is when you decide who you are going to be in this world it is a time that is deeply important in developing your likes and dislikes, value system, sense of morality, goals, and confidence. It s a place for mistakes and redemption. This reflection lead me to consider my eighth graders-those who are going out into the world, changed from when they entered this building in sixth grade. I thought about my students who, in the time I ve known them, have demonstrated a growth mindset those who began to figure out who they are, who they want to be, and for what they stand. One person in particular immediately stood out to me. In LA the 8 th graders read three books with me, all connected to social justice and the Catholic Social Teachings. This student was clearly passionate about social justice and human rights-openly frustrated with issues of discrimination, prejudice, and oppression. This student was able to clearly and respectfully articulate their viewpoints, and asked really thoughtful questions. They weren t afraid of how they would be perceived by their classmates, but were committed to developing their own ideas about social justice, equality and human rights. In Pope Francis book, The Church of Mercy, he writes, Situations can change; people can change. Be the first to seek to bring good. Do not grow accustomed to evil, but defeat it with good. Early in my time here I was deeply moved and impressed by the actions of this student; a student who, like Pope Francis describes, refused to be indifferent to evil in the world around them, instead choosing to combat that evil with goodness. This student took it upon themself to reach out to Mrs. Bellefleur to organize a peaceful way to stand in solidarity with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas students, to acknowledge and pay tribute to the loss of life their community endured on February 14 th in a way that was unique and comfortable to our school community. Because of her continuous growth mindset, her engagement with the world around her, her character, and the goodness she brings to Saint Timothy Middle School each day, it is my honor to recognize Jess Pinckney as the Student of the Week. Ms. Jaclyn Evans Language Arts Teacher Student of the Week June 4th-June 8th As we have come upon the end of the school year, the last full week of classes, and this final Student of the Week award, I have spent a lot of time thinking about our eighth graders leaving and the roles that will need to be filled in the coming school year. For our sixth graders, our rising seventh graders, you are no longer the new kids. There will be younger students in the building who will look to you for guidance and understanding. And for our seventh graders, our rising eighth graders, you will have to be the role models for every student and embrace your new leadership roles and a renewed commitment to live out the Saint Timothy Middle School Mission Statement. When I think about leadership in our current sixth and seventh grade, I of course think about those students who excel in my classroom academically, but more importantly, I think about those students who excel in character. As we have discussed time and time again, middle school is an opportunity to grow in academics, character, and in faith. It s also a time to take risks and make mistakes. I don t think of the Student of the Week award as something that is only attainable to those who demonstrate perfection rather I think of it as an award attainable to anyone who has a willingness to demonstrate growth and a desire to do better week in and week out. Additionally, I think of someone who really embraced the challenge I gave my students when I went over my expectations in December always be kind, respectful to others, work hard, and have a growth mindset. This person really demonstrated a growth mindset a willingness to embrace challenges, to put forth more effort, to work hard, to try new things, and take risks. I strongly believe that because of their growth mindset, their kindness, their respect for others, and their sense of humor, this Student of the Week will rise to the challenge and will be a strong leader for our current and incoming students as an eighth grader. It is my honor to present Owen Macary as the Student of the Week. Mrs. Jaclyn Evans Language Arts Teacher
