3 The Shepherd s Voice I m going to indulge my inner Church nerd this week and write about a part of the liturgy today. That part is, of course, the sequence that preceded the singing of the Alleluia. I ve wri en about sequences before, both in this column and in my weekly , but the sequence for Pentecost the Veni, Sancte Spiritus is too good not to write about. In fact, in medieval mes, this sequence was known as the Golden Sequence because of it s beauty. The authorship of the hymn is disputed. Many ascribe it to Pope Innocent III (d. 1216), but other scholars say it was composed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Cardinal Stephen Langton (d. 1228). Perhaps most likely is that it was ghostwri en for one of these two. Whomever wrote it was quite skilled in the La n language. In each of the six-line stanzas, lines 1 and2, 3 and 6, and 4 and 5 rhyme. Every third line ends in -ium. The repeated use of the word veni (come) in the opening stanza aptly expresses the deep desire of the soul for the coming of the Consoler. Similarly, the repeated use of the verb da (to give or to grant) in the final stanza expresses the deep confidence the author has in the Holy Spirit. Arguably, the most no ceable thing about this hymn is its brevity that the author can do so much in 30 short lines. With enough prac ce (and a li le talent), anyone can write beau ful La n poetry. What sets the Veni, Sancte Spiritus apart and gives it such longevity is the sanc ty standing behind the work. In his 1902 work, The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, Dogma cally, Liturgically, and Asce cally Explained, Fr. Nicholas Gihr writes, The sequence for [Pentecost] can have come but from a heart wholly inflamed with the fire of the Holy Ghost. It is an incomparable hymn, breathing the sweetness of Paradise, and regaling us with heaven s sweetest fragrance. Think what we could accomplish if our hearts were inflamed with the fire of the Holy Spirit. Think of the art we could create that would give glory to God. Think of the things we could write that would edify others. Think of the things we could say that would boldly proclaim the Gospel. Think of the things we could do to build up the Kingdom of God. Spend me this Pentecost asking the Holy Spirit to set you on fire and drive out your fear, as He did for the Apostles on the first Pentecost. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love! Oremus pro invicem! Fr. Mike Welcome Home! 5 PARISH MINISTRY Reflec on On this Feast of Pentecost, when we remember the Holy Spirit descending on Mary and the Apostles in the Upper Room, we con nue our month of special devo on to our Blessed Mother. The following is an excerpt from a homily by Saint Irenaeus wri en in the late 100 s where he reflects on Mary as the New Eve. The Lord, coming into his own crea on in visible form, was sustained by his own crea on which he himself sustains in being. His obedience on the tree of the cross reversed the disobedience at the tree in Eden; the good news of the truth announced by an angel to Mary, a virgin subject to a husband, undid the evil lie that seduced Eve, a virgin espoused to a husband. As Eve was seduced by the word of an angel and so fled from God a er disobeying his word, Mary in her turn was given the good news by the word of an angel, and bore God in obedience to his word. As Eve was seduced into disobedience to God, so Mary was persuaded into obedience to God; thus the Virgin Mary became the advocate of the virgin Eve. Christ gathered all things into one, by gathering them into himself. He declared war against our enemy, crushed him who at the beginning had taken us cap ve in Adam, and trampled on his head, in accordance with God s words to the serpent in Genesis: I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall lie in wait for your head, and you shall lie in wait for his heel. The one lying in wait for the serpent s head is the one who was born in the likeness of Adam from the woman, the Virgin. This is the seed spoken of by Paul in the le er to the Gala ans: The law of works was in force un l the seed should come to whom the promise was made. Sick or Shut In Do you know of someone in our parish who is sick or shut in and in need of Holy Communion or simply a visit from us? Because of privacy rules, we are o en unaware of who from our parish is in the hospital. And when our brothers and sisters come home from the hospital, they may be unable to a end Mass while they recover. We want to be able to bring them the gi of the Holy Eucharist and arrange for visits with the Ladies of Charity of our parish. Please be our eyes and ears in the community so we can carry out our parish mission statement which states that Impassioned by our love for Christ, we reach out and serve the needs of our en re community. Contact Mary Jordan at the parish office. Service and Outreach Volunteer Opportuni es Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me.
