3 LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY- Adult Faith Formation-Lent Continuing with our theme for this year s Adult Faith Formation program "Lord Teach Us to Pray", our Lenten study will be "Finding God in All Things: The Examen Prayer with Fr. Timothy Gallagher, OMV. Yes, you heard that right! Lent is right around the corner. Ash Wednesday is February 14 th, so it is time for us to begin thinking about what we will offer God during this penitential season. All are welcome to join us and please invite a friend. The program will begin on Wednesday, February 21st from 7:00 PM- 8:30 PM in the St. James Church Hall. There are five sessions. St. Ignatius Loyola's Examen is a daily meditation practiced by Jesuit priests and many other Catholics as a way to reflect on the presence of God in the ordinary and in this video series, Fr. Timothy Gallagher explains how this surprisingly simple prayer can make us more grateful individuals. In an easy step by step process, Fr. Gallagher guides you through understanding the Examen and its purpose in finding God in all things. Thank you from MACC..dated 1/15/2018 Dear Family of Saint James Parish, Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Thank you so much for your gift of food and $330 to MACC Charities Food Pantry. Poverty and/or illness present unbelievable challenges for hundreds of families in our community each day. The hot meal enjoyed at noontime at MACC is often the only meal or only substantial meal of the day. Twenty-three people ventured out in the blizzard last Thursday to eat with us. I do not know how hungry I would have to be to do that. I am grateful we were able to get in to prepare the food for them. No words can describe the joy we see on the faces of those who come to us hungry, out of work or dealing with an emergency and hear the words we can help. We know we can only say that, because you said I can help first. When Community shows up, nothing is impossible. 5 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Religious Education Classes meet on Sundays 10:00AM 10:50AM in St. James School. Blessing Workshop, with author Gunilla Norris on Saturday, February 3, 10 AM-5 PM. Blessing is contagious. The more we feel blessed, the more of a blessing we become; to live in awareness of blessing, to cultivate it and to share it is a spiritual practice that can sustain us and fill us with strength and joy. In this workshop, we will create practices that nurture our ability to sustain a life lived in blessing, including the making of blessing postcards to share. $65, includes lunch. Holy Family Retreat Center, West Hartford Novena to the Blessed Virgin Mary Spend some quality time with our Lord. Each Monday at 7:10PM at Assumption Church a Novena will be held. It comes from one of the most popular and well-loved prayers in the world: the Peace Prayer of Saint Francis. Peacemaking is not an optional commitment. It is a requirement of our faith. What does it mean to be a peacemaker? What is the Christian response to violence? Service for Seniors is a free service intended to provide miscellaneous light home maintenance to parishioners who are either at least 80 years old or who are disabled and not physically or safely able to perform these tasks on their own. The FEBRUARY MACC Food Collection will be held the weekend of February 10/11. There is a need for pasta sauce, cereal, soups, condiments, canned pasta/chili, canned corn, jelly, and peanut butter. If you would like to make a monetary donation, please put money/check (payable to MACC Food Pantry) in an envelope marked food collection and drop it in the collection basket. Please leave food in church hall at Saint James or Assumption. Double bagging is helpful and a reminder: MACC does not accept expired food. Thank you for your support.

6 I love my Catholic school because we learn about Jesus and God in religion. We also go to church and say the Rosary. The friends and people at Saint James are really nice, too. -- Amelia, 3rd Grade National Catholic Schools Week (January 28th February 2nd) At Saint James, we know attending a Catholic school is a privilege and an honor that many parents sacrifice to provide to their children. Leading up to National Catholic Schools Week, teachers and students have been discussing what it means to go to a Catholic school. To stimulate discussion, several Saint James School teachers asked their classes to write down why they love going to a Catholic School. We wanted to share several of their thoughts with our parishioners, as your prayers and support play such an important role in helping our Parish school grow and flourish: Being in a Catholic school is special to me because you get to learn about the Good News that God wants us to know. We get to learn about how Jesus suffered and died for us to save us from sin. We get to learn that God made us special and that he loves us very much. We also get to see our friends and learn different subjects. Most importantly, we learn to act as God s children. -- Samuel, 7th Grade There are many special things about going to a Catholic school, especially Saint James. We learn many advanced skills and received a high level of education to help us excel in our studies. At Catholic schools, we are lucky to learn about Jesus Christ and celebrate Catholic holidays such as Advent, Christmas, and Easter. Contributing to that, we are also able to engage in monthly Church celebrations and receive the Eucharist. Catholic schools have many skilled teachers who are kind but discipline us so we learn basic, life-long lessons. These teachers are always willing to go the extra step to help students become the best they can be. Although a good amount of people who go to Catholic schools are Catholic, an average percentage are not. Despite this, they still get to engage in religion classes and attend the Masses, showing the community that at Catholic schools, we accept everyone! -- Kaitlyn, 7th Grade I love my Catholic school because we can talk about Jesus. -- Grant, 2nd Grade I love my Catholic school because the teachers are very nice and we get to do religion. -- Teaghan, 2nd Grade I love my Catholic school because the teachers are very nice and the students care for others. -- Kaitlyn, 3rd Grade I love Saint James School because all the teachers are so nice. All the lessons are so interesting. Everyone is so kind. I really like the fact that we have the chance to learn religion. -- Cora, 3rd Grade In addition, a few of our parents and students were invited to the Archdiocese of Hartford s radio station, WJMJ, to record testimonials on behalf of Saint James School. These testimonials will air on WJMJ (88.9 FM) during Catholic Schools Week. All testimonials were written by the students and it is so heartwarming to hear their sweet messages! We hope you will have an opportunity to hear the messages for yourself if you listen to WJMJ.

Meetings will be held on Sunday nights from 6:30-8 pm at the Cathedral, 140 Farmington Ave, Hartford. For more information please call Fr. Birthright s guiding principle is: It is the RIGHT of every pregnant woman to give BIRTH and the RIGHT of every child to be BORN. Birthright is an emergency pregnancy service offering free pregnancy tests, friendship counseling, and practical support to women in crisis pregnancies. Call if you would like to volunteer.
