Thank you to those Parishioners who have responded to our recent mailing and have helped us to get closer to our goal! Lofty Thoughts I recently attended daily Mass at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence, RI. Similar to Saint James Church, the ceiling is made of wood, representing the keel (bottom) of a ship. Sunday Mass includes chant of all the Mass parts with bulletins for the congregation. The daily Mass was unaccompanied; however, the Alleluia and Agnus Dei were sung. I felt like I was home and in prayer with our Catholic family. I hope singing the Agnus Dei at Saint James helps prepare you for a similarly prayerful experience here and when you travel. During Lent we will highlight the mercy of God by singing the Kyrie from one of the Chant Masses. You can rehearse this by searching the web for kyrie xvi schaefer and selecting the video. On our Lenten Journey, may our Lord have mercy. James Bagni, Music Director Religious Education Classes for Grades 1-8 are held on Sundays 10:00AM 10:50AM in St. James School. 5 SAINT JAMES SCHOOL OPEN HOUSES & ADMISSIONS Saint James School is now accepting new student applications for its pre-kindergarten, elementary school, and middle school for the school year. Informational Open Houses for families interested in learning more will be held as follows: Kindergarten through 8th Grade Program: Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at 6:30pm Pre-Kindergarten Program: Tuesday, March 26, 2019 drop in from 6:30pm 8:00pm To register for an Open House event or to schedule a personal tour of the school at a time that better suits your schedule, aguenther@saintjamesschool.net, visit the school s website at or call the school at Archbishop s Annual Appeal This week marks the start of the 2019 Archbishop s Annual Appeal in our parish. If you haven t already, you will soon receive a letter from Archbishop Blair seeking your support. As Catholics in the Archdiocese of Hartford, we have profound impact on our local communities not only in the spiritual realm, but intimately connected to it, the realm of social services and many charities and outreach services performed by, or with help from our Church. For the third year in a row, in 2018, the Archbishop s Annual appeal Vicariate Outreach Program provided over $1,000,000 to over 200 local organizations in Hartford, Litchfield and New Haven counties. Organizations such as the MACC charities and St. Vincent depaul Society right here in our own town received funding from the Appeal s Vicariate Outreach Program that make a difference in serving our neighbors. Please respond generously. Weekly Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament Weekly exposition of the Blessed Sacrament takes place on Mondays at Assumption Church from 2 PM until the conclusion of the evening Novena service. Please try to set aside at least one hour weekly to spend with the Lord in prayer for the special intentions requested by the archbishop: an increase in priestly vocations, the success of the archdiocesan synod, and healing for our suffering Church. Sign-up sheets will be available at the church entrances. Please note: exposition will not take place if Monday is a holiday. Monday Confession will be held 7:00PM-8:00PM The door of faith is always open for us, ushering us into the life of stronger Communion with God and offering entry into his Church. This year, prepare for Easter by receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Let us pray that this Lenten initiate will rejuvenate Catholics of all ages through spiritual reflection and their desire to become one with God. GOSPEL MEDITATION: ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE s. Carpools. Shopping lists. Home repairs. It can seem like we move so quickly from one thing to the next. Our news comes in sound bites and headlines. How often do we take time for silence, for prayer, for reflection, for wisdom? Jesus warns us of stumbling through life without an adequate sense of where we're going. "Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit?" This Sunday's Gospel isn't about fumbling along but offers a self -check on our own motivations. "Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?" Without adequate self-reflection, it's easy to become blind to our own faults. We go through life's motions as our bad habits linger or even increase. We may become increasingly impatient, we may avoid important tasks, we may neglect the emotional needs of our spouse. Perhaps, in the process, we find fault with those around us. In the words of Jesus, "remove the wooden beam from your own eye first." So how do we know? How can we notice the hidden faults in our lives? "A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of store of evil produces evil." Do you notice certain relationships that have become strained, or situations where you know you don't act your best? Perhaps this is an area where you are acting out of sin, rather than virtue. The truth is, all of us are a mixture of light and dark, vice and virtue. We can't pretend we're perfect! But we also need to take time to pause and prayerfully examine the fruit we're bearing. -LPI Publications

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP Recognize God in Your Ordinary Moments I was traveling recently and watched as a wife led her blind husband onto the plane by her arm. She lovingly helped him into his seat and made sure he was comfortable. She placed their bags above in the bin and then sat next to him. They were ready for the flight. As I sat in my seat just a few rows away, I wondered what he would do if she ever left his side. Sometimes those we love in our life can be blind, and we need to be their eyes. They aren't physically blind, but they are unable to see the truth about their life, situation, or needs. We need to lend them our sight and insight, or they will remain in their world of darkness. Jesus asked his disciples, "Can a blind person guide a blind person?" If we aren't actively working to be sure that we can see clearly, what will we be able to offer someone we care about when they come to us with their blindness? Can you lead someone to Christ if you aren't living a life with him yourself? Can you share with another truth if you aren't concerned with knowing the truth yourself? Life is not always easy. Without faith, hope, and love, the road can be too hard to travel. We are not created to be alone. Instead, we are created to be traveling companions. However, the blind cannot lead the blind. May the Light of Christ dispel your darkness and give you sight so that when the call comes, you might lend an arm to lead the blind. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS Our Lady of Calvary Upcoming Women s Retreat Dates The World Will be Saved by Beauty March 8-10, 2019; April Take time to focus on those things that lift you up and help you feel closer to your God and sustain you.
