Perpetua and Felicity Wednesday: St. John of God Thursday: St. Frances of Rome Friday: Abstinence Saturday: Purim (Jewish festival of the story of Esther) begins at sunset Rite of Sending and Rite of Election Today, we will be celebrating the Rite of Sending at the 9:00 a.m. mass. This rite and the Rite of Election go hand in hand within the process of the Rite of Christian Initiation. These rites are celebrated by those that have been preparing to receive the sacraments, known as catechumens. These two rites are all about sending the catechumens for a reason, receiving them and returning them to their parish in anticipation of the Easter Sacraments in a few short weeks. They will be presented to be recognized for the progress they have made, and to be sent to Archbishop Thomas Wenski who will receive them at the Rite of Election later that Sunday at St. Mary Cathedral. These rites are full of symbolism used to assist in spiritual inspiration. These symbols should create in them the Spirit-driven needed to seek and find the love and peace of Jesus in their lives. The heart of any rite is how the symbols are presented and received. What would be the use of doing something and not having a response or reaction that would move you to want to continue to seek the love of God? Each rite celebrated is a passing from one way of understanding the Christian life to another more discerning, zealous approach to the life in Christ one is seeking. Through the Rite of Sending and the Rite of Election sponsors/godparents and the parish community give their testimony that the catechumens have experienced true conversion of faith and attest to their commitment to the Catholic community. After Mass Fellowship Join your fellow parishioners for coffee, fellowship and sharing after the 7:30am, 9am and 11am Mass every Sunday in the Parish Hall. We are asking our fellow parishioners to donate coffee, creamer, sugar and goodies (Example ~ cookies ~ Hostess items ~ prepackaged items) to help support this endeavor. CCD parents will receive participation hours for donations. Call the office for more information. STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like God--we want control, power, and answers to all of life's difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of conversion.
