It is mandatory for all confirmands. The retreat will be conducted by Sr. Mary Bernard. The retreat will start at 11:15 AM and conclude by 5 PM. Lunch will be provided. If you have not received your set of March envelopes please notify the Parish Office at FASTING AND ABSTINENCE FOR CATHOLICS IN THE U.S. During Lent, Catholics in the United States abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. They fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. To abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent means to not eat meat on those days. It does not intend the omission of eggs or dairy products. The required fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday involves eating only one full meal on those days. One or two smaller meals may be taken on those days, but may not total one full meal. The required fast does not allow eating anything between meals. All Catholics who have completed their fourteenth year are bound by the law of abstinence; all adults are bound by the law of fast up to the beginning of their sixtieth year. Nevertheless, pastors and parents are to see to it that minors who are not bound by the law of fast and abstinence are educated in an authentic sense of penance. - Code of Canon Law, #1252

We are collecting non-perishable food donations for Easter baskets. Please leave items at the front or rear entrances of the church each weekend through Sunday, March 18 th. Suggested items: $20 Store gift cards (Stop & Shop or Shoprite); canned tuna, chicken or turkey; pasta; stuffing; soups; rice; beans; peanut butter; jelly; powdered milk; cereals; juice; spaghetti sauce; instant mashed potatoes; macaroni & chesses; canned fruits and vegetables. For information call Tom Spievak : REFLECTION There is something very comforting about the fact that Jesus experienced a kind of mystical illumination that was followed by his direct movement to Jerusalem and the climax of his mission as our Savior. For this reminds us that we too need to reexamine the basic orientation of our lives and to ask whether we are willing to adopt the wisdom of Jesus which counsels us to put aside the dominant quest for satisfaction and security in this life and to accept a new way of living that is marked by a desire to be of service to others. When we realize that the words Listen to him are directed to each one of us, we must take very seriously the implications of such a command from God. This surely must mean that we too are expected to visit this mountain of the Transfiguration, where we can be illuminated by the sure knowledge that, when all is said and done, the most important thing that we can do in this life is to die, as Jesus did, because we love and care for others. We may think that this means nothing but selfdenial, but the fact is that those who seek the happiness of others more than their own satisfaction turn out to be the happiest people of all. This doesn t mean becoming a doormat or catering to obsessive dependants, but it does mean that we are sensitive to others and truly committed to their welfare. This daily dying leads to ultimate resurrection life. It is also an excellent way to keep the spirit of Lent. -Demetrius R. Dumm, O.S.B.
