2 MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners and Extended Family Members, Praised be Jesus Christ! Once every three years, Cardinal Sean recognizes a volunteer from parish for dedicated service to the Church and, therefore, presents to them the Bishop Cheverus Award. This year, it was St. Edward the Confessor Parish s turn. Last Sunday, at a ceremony at Immaculate Conception Church in Malden, Michelle Barrette received the Bishop Cheverus Award as a Faith Formation teacher of multiple classes, Faith in Action participant, fundraiser, volunteer, and her overall dedication to the parish. Congratulations, Michelle! Once again, we enter into a new church year and the Season of Advent. This time of the year we are to make room for and reflect on the Prince of Peace. However, I cannot help but think that the stress most people experience this time of the year is due to anxiety over preparing for our encounters with others, whether it be through gift-giving, guests attending a Christmas gathering we are hosting, or house guests. The fact that Season of Advent is barely over three weeks this year certainly does not take away any of the stress associated with this season. While we seek to be accommodating hosts / hostesses and be attentive to the need s others have expressed to us, we have to remember that God does not ask us to lose our sense of self, our core identity, in the midst of it all. If we believe that God the Father sent his only Son to redeem the world, we do well to ask ourselves How is my preparation enhancing this belief in my own life and how will those experiencing the fruits of my preparation be reminded of this? Preparing for Christmas is meant to enhance our personal relationship with Jesus Christ through the act of sacrifice. For Jesus, this meant giving up all the perks of heaven for 33 years and nine months in order to come to earth and redeem us. Let us keep this in mind as we sacrifice for others in order to enhance our time with them, but not to the point of sacrificing our sense of self as we seek to deepen our relationship with the New Born Savior. The identity which we took on during our Baptism, being Christian, is always to be our first in how we define ourselves. Gratefully yours in the Expectant Christ, Fr. Steve from This Week In Church Signs: Prophecy class cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. 3 Parish news Page 3 JESSE TREE St. Edward Our Advent tradition of the Jesse Tree continues this year, supporting St. Mary s Parish, Roxbury and the St. Monica s South Boston Collaborative. Many of their parishioners are not in a position to provide their families with needs and gifts during the Christmas season. Those identified needs are reflected in the tags you will find on our Jesse Tree. For adults, the clothing and toiletry gifts we deliver to St. Mary s will be brought to residents of the Shattuck Hospital in Jamaica Plain. The Jesse Tree will be up and in the Narthex starting this weekend. For pre-teens and teens, we have tags for $25 gift cards to one of four stores: Marshalls, Old Navy, Target, and TJ Maxx. For St. Monica s there will be $25 gift cards for Stop & Shop, Old Navy and Target. Important - St. Mary s matches the gifts with letters of need, so they request that gifts remain unwrapped; no plastic bags! Each gift should have the tag attached. Gift boxes and wrapping paper are most welcome. ***To allow St. Mary s staff adequate time to organize the requests and gifts, all gifts should be delivered to St. Edward s no later than Wed, Dec 12th***. As always, we thank you in advance for your continued support! Thanks. St. Edward and St. Jude Cookie Walk December 8th@9:30 AM (Held in St. Edward Gym) ***CALLING ALL BAKERS*** "Baking is not a small act at all. It's an act of love. It's an act of charity. It's an act of kindness and compassion." We are SO excited to bring this awesome event to our church and to our communities! We are looking for 100 Adult Volunteer Bakers who will bake in your kitchens a specific Christmas cookie -- Raspberry Thumbprints, Decorated Sugar Cookies, Shortbread Buttons -- or whatever your Christmas specialty may be! Work alone or with a group of friends on a Sunday afternoon in November (you can freeze many types of cookies)! We are asking each baker to commit to TEN DOZEN (or more!) cookies. The idea is to assemble and offer hundreds of cookies, in many varieties. We are also looking for amazing bar cookies -- if that is your comfort zone. Although they are delicious, please NO CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES or BROWNIES. The goal of our Cookie Walk is to offer special Christmas cookies to those who may not have the time or talent to bake their own. Without Bill Rettman organizing this wonderful event at St. Jude's and for so many wonderful people donating the turkeys and all of the fixings, this event would not of been possible. The confirmation students that volunteered and hand delivered the turkey baskets to the Hillcrest Village community did a fantastic job! The people really enjoyed and appreciated seeing and talking to our young adults. This truly made so many families have a very happy Thanksgiving! The Sacrament of the Sick will be celebrated immediately following the Mass on Saturday, Dec 22nd, 4pm at St. Jude. The primary aim of the Sacrament of the Sick is the healing of those who are sick. It may involve physical healing. It may involve spiritual healing. It may promise restoration. Or, it may guide one to resurrection into God s kingdom. That belongs to God to decide. The Sacrament of Anointing is open to all who have health problems due to illness or age, or have impending surgery. Through the Sacrament of Anointing, the Church supports the sick and elderly in their struggle against illness and continues Christ s work of healing. The sacrament expresses the sharing that each one of us has in the suffering of others. Even if you have participated in the past, we urge you to join us for this moving liturgical event. Friends and relatives are encouraged to attend this communal celebration. Volunteer Needed St. Jude Children s Choir is looking for someone to coordinate the Recreation of the Nativity Scene at the 5:00pm Christmas Eve Mass. Would you like to be part of a select group of boys and girls in your parish who serve at Mass? Do you want to represent your community as a Catholic, and assist as we celebrate Jesus s message? If so, please send an to Kathryn Shilale at kathryn@shilale.net (St. Edward) or Mary Sheedy msheedy.stedstjude@gmail.com or cell Minimum grade to join is second. There is no maximum age! The most often question asked by the parents is: What it the time commitment? My child is VERY busy playing football, soccer, piano, volunteering for the scouts. We don t have time to serve. We have homework to do. We have families. Don t worry. All the children that are altar servers are involved in sports, plays, and community service. They also have family commitments and homework. The time commitment averages to be once a month for one Mass. The more servers we have, the more flexible the schedule. Time commitment should not be a concern in your ability to serve. Desire to participate in the Mass and be an integral part of your parish community is the motivator to became and altar server. We would love to have you join.
