2 Dear Parishioners and Extended Family Members, Praised be Jesus Christ! MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR Now that we have begun the new year, we are able to take longer looks back as well as ahead towards the future. As I look back, I wish to thank all who expressed your Christmas and New Year wishes to me in the manners in which you have. Please know how much I appreciate the time and generosity you spent to express yourselves to me in such a way. It really gave me the feeling that I am continuing to settle in and make myself at home as I still strive to get to know you more. Because of the advanced deadlines, this is the first real time bulletin letter I have written in a while. I find it funny how people ask me if I survived Christmas. It was quite the experience for me in both parishes. Fr. Gregory and I tried to encourage those we only see at that time in church to come and visit more often. We would appreciate if you would follow up with that same message when you encounter the same people out and about. Now that the new year is in full swing, there are plenty of reminders of what is down the road. The first was this past Saturday, when Fr. Gregory and myself celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time with each parish s Faith Formation second graders. It was a joyful experience for the both of us to bring our Savior s loving mercy and compassion to so many of our collaborative s children for the first time. The children were attentive and engaged as well as prepared. They are now one step closer to First Communion. Thank you to Lorraine Wright and Elaine Morisi for coordinating these ceremonies and to their teachers for instructing them so well. May we follow the example of these children and embrace Jesus love, mercy, and compassion in this wonderful sacrament! This past Monday, Fr. Gregory and I began interviewing Confirmation candidates as part of the requirement for receiving that sacrament. (We begin with St. Ed s since their Confirmation is before St. Jude s). It is always encouraging for me to hear how our students have experienced the faith up until now in their lives. Also, to have the chance to encourage them to hang on to it and build on it in their lives, especially since they will be leaving home in the not-too-distant future. Fr. Gregory and I have always been impressed during our encounters with the collaborative s Confirmation candidates. In closing, I wish to convey how grateful I am for your welcome and acceptance of me during my first seven months here. As I continue to experience many firsts, your patience and kindness is always appreciated. Gratefully yours in the Newly Baptized Christ, Fr. Steve from This Week In Church Signs: C mon. 3 Parish news Page 3 Weekly Opportunity for Special Occasions and Memorials at St. Jude Parish SNOW EMERGENCY/ CANCELLATION POLICY With winter upon us, we wanted to advise that if Medfield/Norfolk schools are closed, morning Mass and Faith Formation classes will be cancelled. Message from the Archdiocese of Boston regarding distribution of Holy Communion: In response to many reports of cold and flu illness throughout the region, the decision has been made to eliminate the distribution of the Precious Blood within the Archdiocese of Boston until further notice. SCOUT SUNDAY FEBRUARY 3RD 9:15 AM Mass The Boy Scouts of America annually celebrates its founding on Scout Sunday. The Scout Law says that a "Scout is Reverent," and Scouts of all ages promise to do their "Duty to God". These values strengthen youth character in their family, community and faith. Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are encouraged to attend mass on Sunday, Feb. 3rd 9:15 am. Please wear your Class A uniform. A Linger Longer after mass will be sponsored by Pack 200. You can help beautify our Sanctuary at St. Jude Parish by donating flowers in memory of a loved one, in thanksgiving for a birthday, anniversary or special event. We would be happy to make arrangements for flowers on a particular weekend. Please contact: Deb Bergerson OPERA Please join Fr. Steve for an encore performance of Carmen! Live HD broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera. Saturday, February 9, 2019 Meet at Patriot's Place theatre lobby by 12:30pm Send a $28 check to St. Edward (made out to St. Edward and "opera" in the memo section). The Sacrament of the Sick will be celebrated immediately following the Mass on Saturday, January 26th, 4pm at St. Jude. The primary aim of the Sacrament of the Sick is the healing of those who are sick. Holy Hour for Life Sunday, January 20, 2019 Following the 11:45 Mass at St. Edward In honor of the National Day of Prayer and Penance, The Collaborative of the Catholic Parishes of Medfield and Norfolk will celebrate a Holy Hour for Life, Forgiveness and Healing on Sun, Jan 20th at 12:45PM in the St. Edward chapel. This is offered for those who have been wounded by abortion, for respect for the dignity of human life from conception to natural death, and for those who govern us, that they may be guided by justice, truth and a love for the gift of life. Holy Hours will be held at parishes throughout the Archdiocese on different days and times and we will all be praying in solidarity with the thousands of pilgrims going tot Washington, D.C. for the March for Life. Please join us, all are welcome! It may involve physical healing. It may involve spiritual healing. It may promise restoration. Or, it may guide one to resurrection into God s kingdom. That belongs to God to decide. The Sacrament of Anointing is open to all who have health problems due to illness or age, or have impending surgery. Through the Sacrament of Anointing, the Church supports the sick and elderly in their struggle against illness and continues Christ s work of healing. The sacrament expresses the sharing that each one of us has in the suffering of others. Even if you have participated in the past, we urge you to join us for this moving liturgical event. Friends and relatives are encouraged to attend this communal celebration. Retrouvaille Christian Peer Ministry Retrouvaille, a Christian peer ministry for hurting and struggling marriages is planning couples weekends on February 8-10, 2019 and June 21-23, 2019 in Framingham, MA. Over 76% of those who attend a weekend are still married five years later. Over 95% would recommend a weekend to a struggling couple. 4 Parish News Page 4 FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION St. Edward/St. Jude Collaborative Sponsors Second Annual Retreat at the Newport Harbor and Marina Hotel - March 9-10, 2019 Sometimes as one enters into a new year - reflection is a part of the process. What did we like about 2018? What would we like to maybe change about 2018 if we had the ability to do so? So, as we enter into 2019, it might be interesting to also reflect on our prayer and our God moments in 2018 and to think about where am I in my relationship with God. Retreats offer one an opportunity to get away from our usual routines, a space for prayerful reflection and a chance to deepen our relationship with God. God always invites. How will we respond in 2019? For our Second Annual Retreat at Newport we have chosen for our theme - IS GOD ENOUGH? Our title is meant to be provocative but the question is a serious one! Can we truly say and mean that God is enough? We are returning on March 9-10, 2019, to the Newport Harbor and Marina Hotel and we have the perfect getaway package for the weekend - one day of prayer (Saturday) and one day of fun (Sunday) to explore Newport on your own. Liturgy is included as part of our retreat on Saturday afternoon. Our retreat weekend starts on Saturday morning and includes one overnight, four meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday morning. One person in a room - $203, two people in a room - each person $158. If you want to start your weekend early - come on Friday night and pay an extra $89. The hotel also has a pool and a special for parking for these two days. Why not gift yourself with this weekend! You can Mary Sheedy at: marysheedy@comcast.net or call her at for any questions. A $100 deposit holds your spot on this retreat. You can mail it in or bring it in to either of the Faith Formation Offices. We need your commitment asap as we can only take 40 people on this venture. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA Are you interested in becoming Catholic or just curious about the Catholic faith? Would you like to explore questions about God and the Church? Or, are you a baptized adult seeking full initiation through Holy Communion and Confirmation? If so, RCIA is for you! RCIA is the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. It culminates in full membership in the Church through the Sacraments, but is also an open-ended process of inquiry, learning, and preparation. No commitment is necessary! Come, meet experienced Catholics and other inquirers in a friendly small-group setting, and see where this journey can take you. If you are interested or know someone who might be, please contact Mary Sheedy at msheedy.stedstjude@gmail.com or St. Jude at Transformed in Love Marriage Prep Transformed in Love for engaged couples is the Archdiocesan program for marriage preparation.
