2 MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners and Extended Family Members, Praised be Jesus Christ! We find Summer upon us. The word vacation tends to go part and parcel with summertime. If we are indeed blessed with vacation time during the summer, it is important to keep in mind that we spend it properly. Vacation is a not to be seen as a time that we have total freedom over, to the point of wasting it. It is rather a time to realize that, while we still have responsibilities, whether they be personal, practical, and / or towards others, especially family, we have the freedom to have more say when and how these responsibilities are fulfilled. In changing our routine, we are freer to make time for those aspects of our life we give less attention to during our normal routine. Let us view Summer as an opportunity to improve the exercise of our spiritual lives. I will state the obvious first. Summer is a great time to read. One book we can pick up is The Bible. Please, do not start at the beginning!!! In the Old Testament, read the Book of Jonah (short and contains humor). For a gospel, read Mark (short, compact, and familiar). For a New Testament reading, try Acts of the Apostles (non-stop adventure) or the Letter of James (relationships). There are also biographies about the saints, whether it is a long one about a single saint or a collection of short ones about multiple saints. There are also writings from Pope Francis (many of which are not terribly long) or any of the other popes. There are also plenty of books regarding Catholic spirituality. (I always enjoy Ronald Rolheiser, who writes for The Pilot) A gentle reminder, since you are probably already in church reading this, keep Sunday Mass a part of your Summer routine! There is a temptation to allow ourselves to come off our summer vacation exhausted and needing the very rest the we craved in the first place as we began our vacations. Please don t let this happen to you! Manage your God-given time wisely!! This Week In Church Signs: Love is beautiful when it is professed, but is only meaningful when it is practiced. Gratefully yours in Christ, Fr. Steve St. Jude Offertory July 1, 2018 to be posted next week St. Edward Offertory July 1, 2018 to be posted next week MASS INTENTIONS ST.JUDE PARISH Sun July 8: 7:30 Parishioners of St. Jude Tues July 10: 9:00 Florence M. (After the Prayers of the Faithful) PRAYER REQUESTS St. Edward Just a reminder, that there is a binder on the table in the Narthex in which you are invited to place the names of all those for whom you ask us to pray. You are most welcome to enter names in this booklet in order that prayers may be offered for your loved ones.
3 Parish news Page 3 SUMMER MASS SCHEDULE June 30 Sept 2, 2018 (Please note change in Mass time) St. Edward Saturday 5:30 PM Sunday 8:30 AM & 11:30 AM *No 5PM Sunday* Daily Mass: Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri, Sat 9:00 AM St. Jude Saturday 4:00 PM Sunday 7:30 AM & 10:00 AM Daily Mass: Monday-Friday 9:00 AM July 8 ~ Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time We hear in today s gospel that Jesus returned to his home town but he did not receive a warm reception. In fact, people questioned his authority and were unwilling to believe his teaching. St. Paul also refers to the trials and hardships he encountered in his preaching. Despite the rejection they experienced, neither St. Paul nor Jesus did not back away from their mission. Pray for the grace to persevere in the work of being a disciple. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Fr. Steve has NEW addresses for both parishes (please do not use the gmail address for him as account has been closed) St. Edward: frsteve1992ed@icloud.com St. Jude: frsteve1992jude@icloud.com 2018 Appeal Update Thank you to all who have participated so generously in this year s Catholic Appeal campaign. Your contributions are the most effective way our Medfield Norfolk Catholic Community can support the Archdiocese s work in caring for our neighbors. It s not too late to participate. You may pick up a pledge form in the Narthex after mass, or stop by the office during the week. Completed pledge forms can be returned to the office during the week or in the weekend offertory. St Jude has exceeded their pledge goal; St Edward is 96% there. Both of our parishes have attained their in-pew pledge target and thus are eligible for rebates. Progress against our goals can normally be seen at bostoncatholicappeal.org. The website, however, is having issues in recent weeks, but is expected to available again shortly. Again, if you have yet to participate, please do so. Thank you. It seems that Jesus is always facing some kind of opposition. Today, those from his native place amaze him because of their lack of faith. We oppose Jesus as well. It is not easy to be challenged and realize our great need to change. We grow comfortable with ourselves and our surroundings and resist change. We become defensive when the wisdom Jesus utters asks us to leave ourselves and our concerns and think more about others. We lack faith in God, faith in ourselves, and faith in one another. We are asked to keep our eyes fixed on the Lord and allow ourselves to be stretched. Jesus knows what he is talking about. Do we really believe this?
4 Parish News Page 4 CATHOLIC QUOTES - WORDS TO INSPIRE THE FAITHFUL Christ has illumined you with wisdom and the fires of His presence... let it blaze! -Caryll Houselander Please consider joining a team of parishioners providing meals to people at the Haley House shelter in Boston. We have 3 teams of volunteers that collaborate to supply a monthly meal of Chili, salad, fresh fruit and juice. Each team donates four times per year and we currently need a volunteer to provide fresh fruit for 15. It s a simple way to make a difference. Just deliver the specified donation to the home of a Medfield driver on the first Sunday morning of February, May, August and November. If you would like to help with this ministry (or be put on the waiting list for future needs) please call Martha Festa ( ). Weekly Opportunity for Special Occasions and Memorials at St. Jude Parish You can help beautify our Sanctuary at St. Jude Parish by donating flowers in memory of a loved one, in thanksgiving for a birthday, anniversary or special event. We would be happy to make arrangements for flowers on a particular weekend. The name of the person or family making such donations of flowers for a particular weekend would also be noted in our bulletin. View our website at NEW LIFE HOME REFURNISHING (NewLifeHR.org) depends on the generosity of others to supply families in need with gently used furniture, appliances and household goods. We have recently experienced a surge in the number of referred households, and, at the same time, a drop in donations over the winter due to inclement weather. Although we are in need of all household items, we are especially in need of couches and dressers or other storage pieces with drawers. Donations can be dropped off on Saturdays between 9 and 11:30 at the warehouse at 102 Elm Street in Walpole. New Life can also be scheduled to do a pickup for more than one large furniture item, but please note, we usually schedule out two weeks in advance. Visit newlifehr.org and click on Donate" to request a time for a furniture pickup. Please also see our website for the items we do and do not take.
