2 MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE July 29, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Have you ever wanted to be part of something bigger? Even the most independent among us likes to make changes and have an impact on others. In this Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus demonstrates one of his most iconic miracles -- the multiplication of the loaves. It is a sign of the institution of the Eucharist, when we are fed not by bread but by the Body of Christ. In the stories of ancient pagan gods, mighty deeds were done entirely under the gods' own power. Mortals may have offered sacrifices to start the chain of events, but they played little role in the miraculous works themselves. Jesus is entirely different. The multiplication of the loaves is a prime example not only of Jesus' power over nature, but of the way he equips his disciples. First, Jesus asks Philip a question "to test him." Jesus has seen the crowds and "he himself knew what he was going to do," but he wants his disciples to start thinking about the problem and its solution. Andrew offers a suggestion, though he isn't confident in it. "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?" Jesus honors Andrew's suggestion, takes the offered loaves, and delegates the Apostles to bring order to the crowd. When the crowd has been fed, the Apostles "gather the fragments left over." In the process, they discover with wonder that bread has been produced in super abundance. In the sacraments, God works through simple matter to make grace real in our lives. He works in and through us as well. Are you facing problems that could have spiritual solutions? Is there a need in your parish or community that you could meet? Whatever our hesitancies, Jesus honors our simple loaves and fishes. He invites us to participate in his generous work of redemption, just as we are. There will be a podium with a binder on it you are invited to place the names of all those for whom you ask us to pray. Please enter the names in the binder in order that prayers may be offered for your loved ones. July 29 ~ Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time There will be plenty for all these words come from our first reading today and are reiterated in the gospel story of the multiplication of the loaves and fish. Our God is generous beyond our expectations! These readings remind us of God s generosity, his providence and loving care, especially when we feel inadequate to the task of being a disciple of Christ. Ponder these words, There will be plenty for all and throughout the week and watch for the ways that God does indeed provide. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Living the Gospel does not require much. In fact, less is sometimes more. Simple gestures or random acts of kindness can have unimaginable results and change lives. It is easy to believe that we do not have what it takes to make a difference, but we do! The key is to learn how to be grateful for the little gifts you possess and share them freely and abundantly. It does not take much to satisfy the hungers of the human heart or mend the wounds of sorrow and pain. All we need to know is that God is with us. All people need to know is that we are with them. God provides the rest. Truly be present to those you meet this week and offer them your most precious gift, the gift of yourself. Its time for the 8 th Annual St Edward Golf Tournament The planning has already begun for the 2018 St Edward Golf Tournament and we welcome NEW people (men and women), NEW ideas and NEW items to the Raffles, the ONLINE Silent Auction and the LIVE Auction!!! The 8 th Annual Tournament and Dinner will be held on Monday, September 10 th at the Walpole Country Club. The day is filled with great fun on the course, followed by a delicious buffet dinner, raffles and auctions. An important reminder for ALL Parishioners (Golfers and Non-Golfers)! We will be holding the ONLINE Silent Auction again this year, opening bidding about 1 week prior to the Golf Tournament (approximately from Labor Day weekend through September 10th)! This ONLINE Silent Auction is a great way for ALL Parishioners (Golfers and Non-Golfers) to have an opportunity to bid on the incredible items donated to this event. More information about this will be coming soon, including the link to REGISTER for the Online Silent Auction! St Jude and St Edward are blessed with all those who volunteer their time to enrich our communities. Our Church has been teaching that those who come together for liturgy cannot simply be spectators; we are asked to fully participate in the liturgy, consciously and actively. Active participation means listening carefully, responding meaningfully, singing and allowing ourselves to be nourished by the Eucharist. Active participation also means that we are Christ to one another in the mass. By welcoming as ushers, by proclaiming the word as Lector, and by sharing communion as Eucharistic ministers, liturgical ministers are Christ present sacramentally. Everyone who is baptized has Christ s imprint and so is worthy of being a liturgical minister. We invite folks to pray about serving as an usher, Eucharistic minister or a lector. We offer training and support. If this speaks to you, please contact Mary or cell Weekly Opportunity for Special Occasions and Memorials at St. Jude Parish Xaverian Brothers Junior Experiences a Pilgrimage to Italy My name is Anthony Cappuccino and I am fortunate enough to be a rising senior at XBHS and an Usher at St. Jude. I was truly blessed to have the opportunity to go to Italy this past June with my brothers and teachers from school. It was a experience I will never forget. The Xaverian Brothers High School Pilgrimage to Italy has its focus on the encountering of a deeper sense of Church and Jesus Christ by experiencing firsthand the center of Catholicism. The experience of Rome and the Vatican points, in many ways, to the universality of the Church. This trip I went on also included a reflective experience while staying with a community of Augustinians in San Gimignano and opportunities for Christian Service with the people of St. Egidio in Rome and the Augustinian Friars in San Gimignano.Day trips have included excursions to Ostia Antica, Assisi to see St. Francis grave, Florence, and Siena to see St. Catherine. One amazing site that I saw was the colosseum. Rising seniors may apply for the program and sit for an interview. Selection is based on prior experiences with campus ministry, as well as the student s ability to articulate a faith-based motivation for participating in XPI and I was totally blessed to be selected. I was truly changed when I saw the Pope at the papal audience at St. Peter s square, but when he made a surprise appearance to St. Mary Major church to pray and walked by me and smiled at me I could truly feel the presence of Jesus Christ in me. We would be happy to make arrangements for flowers on a particular weekend. The name of the person or family making such donations of flowers for a particular weekend would also be noted in our bulletin. Please contact: Deb Bergerson Please consider joining a team of parishioners providing meals to people at the Haley House shelter in Boston. We have 3 teams of volunteers that collaborate to supply a monthly meal of Chili, salad, fresh fruit and juice. Each team donates four times per year and we currently need a volunteer to provide fresh fruit for 15. It s a simple way to make a difference. Just deliver the specified donation to the home of a Medfield driver on the first Sunday morning of February, May, August and November. If you would like to help with this ministry (or be put on the waiting list for future needs) please call Martha Festa ( ). MEDFIELD FOOD CUPBOARD Food Cupboard currently has shortage of Juice they need both large bottles and juice box sizes. Other needs: Kid Friendly cereal (example: Cinnamon Toast Crunch), lunch size boxes of raisins, peanut butter, jam, canned pasta and sauce, bags of rice, tuna (in water preferred), cookies/crackers/salty snacks. (Please leave your donations in the boxes provided in the coat closet area). As always, any donations are greatly appreciated.

5 LIFELONG FAITH FORMATION-YOUTH & ADULTS Page 5 Registration for faith formation classes for the school year opened on Friday, June 1 st. Detailed information has been mailed to families currently registered in the Faith Formation Program. Not sure of your fall schedule? Please still register now as it is easier to change your day and time than to add your child after registration closes. It also helps us to recruit teachers, form balanced classes and order materials. Registration forms received after July 1st will incur a $25 late fee per family which will automatically be added to your tuition. If you are new to town or have a first grader in September 2018, please visit our parish websites (stedward-ma.org/education) or (stjudenorfolk.org) and click on the Faith Formation tab for information. Please Note: Students need to complete both the first and second grades of faith formation to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist at both parishes. SPECIAL NEEDS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION St. Catherine of Siena Parish offers a religious education program for special needs children ages 6 to 16. Classes meet on Saturday mornings in the Siena Room at St. Catherine's school from 9:15 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. The first class this year will take place on the first Saturday in November. Please call Bob Smith for more information and to register at This program is open to special needs children in all parishes. You are invited to Miramar Retreat Center in Duxbury on Saturday evening August 4 for the 15th annual "Some Enchanted Evening". The doors open at 5:30. Reservations are $ per person and include cash bar, exquisite hors d'oeuvres, gourmet dinner and a silent auction. Local vocal entertainer Bill Alberti and piano accompanist and soprano Jillian Carelli will present a musical concert featuring show tunes and popular hit songs. All proceeds benefit Miramar's Capital Campaign. Spiritual Help for Catholic Grieving Parents Serving the Spiritual Needs of Parents Whose Children of Any Age Have Died by Any Cause No Matter How Long Ago The Office of Chaplaincy Programs is now offering the Emmaus Ministry for Grieving Parents, a unique program providing spiritual One-Day and Weekend retreats for grieving parents given by grieving parents. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy The Divine Mercy Chaplet is said after the 9:00 AM Daily Mass at St. Edward on the first Wednesday of every month. Please come join us. Please notify Fr. NEW LIFE HOME REFURNISHING (NewLifeHR.org) depends on the generosity of others to supply families in need with gently used furniture, appliances and household goods. We have recently experienced a surge in the number of referred households, and, at the same time, a drop in donations over the winter due to inclement weather. Although we are in need of all household items, we are especially in need of couches and dressers or other storage pieces with drawers. Donations can be dropped off on Saturdays between 9 and 11:30 at the warehouse at 102 Elm Street in Walpole. New Life can also be scheduled to do a pickup for more than one large furniture item, but please note, we usually schedule out two weeks in advance.
