3 March 2, 2014 Month of St. Joseph Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Isaiah 49:14-15 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 4:1-5 Gospel: Matthew 6:24-34 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK MASS INTENTIONS Mass with Distribution of Ashes at 9:00 am & 7:00 pm Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season we call Lent. Lent calls us to repent of all that obscures God s life within us and to believe in the Good News of the Gospel: The Good News of the forgiveness that is offered, the Good News of God s love that is greater than anything we have done or failed to do, the Good News of the eternal life that has already begun for us through the Death and Resurrection of Jesus and in which we share through Baptism. Lent calls us to life: to become more and more in touch with the reality of God s life within us, to awaken to the glorious destiny that is ours and to hasten toward it. In the early Church, when Lent was a time for the reconciliation of public penitents, the penitents would come to the church at the beginning of Lent; that is, on Ash Wednesday. They would wear a penitential garment, suggesting sackcloth, and be sprinkled with ashes. Then they would be ritually expelled from the assembly to do their penance for forty days, returning to the church on Holy Thursday, when they would be readmitted to the sacraments. With time, the expulsion of penitents disappeared, but the ashes remained and became a call to penance of all the faithful. 6 MUSIC NEWS CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR LADY OF FATIMA PARISH! At the request of Archbishop Sartain and the Office of Liturgy, Our Lady of Fatima s Music Director, Matthew Loucks, has been selected to serve on a archdiocesan music committee which will consult Archbishop Sartain and the Liturgy Office during a period of reflection on the past 50 years of liturgical music and how we might enter into dialogue with contemporary culture on the future of Liturgical Music within our Diocese. Mr. Loucks invitation to serve was in response to a questionnaire submitted to the Archdiocese by Antonio Cardianl Canizares Llover, the Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacrament AND Guiafranco Cardinal Ravas, the Prefect of the Pontifical Council for Culture. Congratulations again to Our Lady of Fatima Parish for this recognition and honor! THE MASS OF VATICAN II (continued ) Fr. Joseph Fessio, S.J. - President of Ignatious Press Nine Proposals of Vatican II #6 (Paragraph 112) the Council speaks specifically of music: "The musical tradition of the Universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art." That is a stupendous and shocking statement; the Council says that the Church's music is a treasure of art greater than any other treasure. Think about that. Think about Chartres Cathedral. Think about the Pieta. Think about Da Vinci's Last Supper. Think of all the crucifixes from Catalonia in Spain and all the Church architecture, art, paintings and sculpture. The Council boldly says that the Church's musical tradition is a treasure of inestimable value greater than any other art. The Council would be remiss in making such a shocking statement without reason: "The main reason for this preeminence is that, as sacred song united to the words, it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy." PROPERS (PRESCRIBED ANTIPHONS) The Propers are Antiphons from Sacred Scripture that accompany the three processions which occur during Mass: the Entrance Procession (Introit), the Presentation of the Gifts (Offertory) and the Communion Procession ( Communio ). INTROIT: Factus est Dominus The Lord has been my strength, He has led me into freedom. OFFERTORY: Domine convertere COMMUNIO : Primum quarite Turn to me, O Lord, and deliver my soul; save me for the sake of your love. Seek first the kingdom of God and all the rest will be given to you in addition, says the Lord. PSALM 100: Serve the Lord with gladness come before Him with joyful singing! This February, I celebrate my 20 th Anniversary serving the Catholic Church as Director of Music. I feel extremely fortunate to have ministered to Christ s holy people in this capacity and am grateful for the love and support shown to me and my family from the people of Our Lady of Fatima Parish these past years! It is an honor to celebrate Holy Mass with such exceptional people. Please continue to pray for all our Music Ministers as they share their many gifts for the greater glory of God! Matthew Loucks
