2 February 9, 2014 Month of the Passion of our Lord Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Isaiah 58:7-10 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Gospel: Matthew 5:13-16 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK MASS INTENTIONS A quick quiz: St. Valentine was: a) a priest in the Roman Empire who helped persecuted Christians during the reign of Claudius II, was thrown in jail, and later beheaded on Feb. 14. b) a Catholic bishop of Terni who was beheaded, also during the reign of Claudius II. c) someone who secretly married couples when marriage was forbidden, or suffered in Africa, or wrote letters to his jailer's daughter, and was probably beheaded. d) all, some, or possibly none of the above. If you guessed d), give yourself a box of chocolates. Although the mid-february holiday celebrating love and lovers remains wildly popular, the confusion over its origins led the Catholic Church, in 1969, to drop St. Valentine's Day from the Roman calendar of official, worldwide Catholic feasts. Following the liturgies this weekend I will offer a special blessing to all married couples. It is fitting for couples to ask for this added strength in their marriages. May God bless all our relationships with love and faithfulness. Peace, Do you suffer from feelings of guilt, grief, anger or depression from a past abortion experience? Do you feel alienated from your faith or wonder if God s love and Forgiveness can really be for you? Does it feel as though no one understands or cares? Join us on a journey of emotional and spiritual healing from abortion. 5 MUSIC MINISTRY 50th ANNIVERSARY OF VATICAN II THE MASS OF VATICAN II (continued from last week ) Fr. Joseph Fessio, S.J. - President of Ignatious Press Nine Proposals of Vatican II Paragraphs 50 to 58 (Vatican II: Sacrosanctum Concilium) contain nine specific changes by the Council: #3 (Paragraph 54) is a key paragraph: "In Masses which are celebrated with the people, a suit able place may be allotted to their mother tongue." This is to apply to the readings and to the Common Prayer. But also as local conditions may warrant, to those parts which pertain to the people. Nevertheless steps should be taken so that the faithful may also be able to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Agnus Dei, Lord s Prayer) which pertain to them." So, the Council did not abolish Latin in the liturgy. The Council permitted the vernacular in certain limited ways, but clearly understood that the fixed parts of the Mass would remain in Latin. #4 (Paragraph 55) discusses receiving Communion, if possible, from hosts consecrated at the Mass in which you participate. The Council permits Communion under both species here, but under very limited circumstances. The Council itself did not call for offering both species to all the faithful all the time, but it did grant limited permission for it. #5 (Paragraph 56) says that there are two parts of the Liturgy, the Word and the Eucharist, and that a pastor should insistently teach the faithful to take part in the entire Mass, especially on Sundays and Feasts of Obligation. #6 (Paragraph 112) the Council speaks specifically of music: "The musical tradition of the Universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art." That is a stupendous and shocking statement; the Council actually says that the Church's music is a treasure of art greater than any other treasure of art she has. Think about that. Think about Chartres Cathedral. Think about the Pieta. Think about Da Vinci's Last Supper. Think of all the crucifixes from Catalonia in Spain, and all the Church architecture and art and paintings and sculpture. The Council boldly says that the Church's musical tradition is a treasure of inestimable value greater than any other art. The Council would be remiss in making such a shocking statement without reason: "The main reason for this preeminence is that, as sacred song united to the words, it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy." What that means is this: it's wonderful to have a beautiful church, stained glass windows, statues, a noble crucifix, prayerful architecture that lift your heart up to God. But those are all surroundings of the Mass. It's the "worship environment," as they would say today. But it's not the Mass itself. (Continued from previous column) The Council says that when the Mass itself is set to music, that's what ennobles music, which, itself, enhances the Mass; and that's what makes the musical tradition the most precious tradition of the Church. Notice, the Council implies what many Church documents have said explicitly - that the most perfect form of music at Mass is not the hymns: most appropriate use of music at Mass, as seen by Church tradition and reaffirmed by the Council, is singing the Mass itself: the Kyrie, the Agnus Dei, the Sanctus, the Acclamations, the Alleluias and so on. Again, this is what the Council actually says. Paragraph 112 adds, "Sacred music is to be considered the more holy in proportion as it is the more closely connected with the liturgical action itself." (The full article is posted on the Music Website. PROPERS (PRESCRIBED ANTIPHONS) The Propers are Antiphons from the Roman Missal which accompany the three processions which occur during Mass: the Entrance Procession (Introit), the Presentation of the Gifts (Offertory) and the Communion Procession ( Communio ). The texts are taken directly from sacred scripture; most often from the Book of Psalms. Like the Readings, these Antiphons are assigned to each Liturgical celebration. Our Lady of Fatima Parish was the first Parish in the Seattle Archdiocese (since Vatican II) to sing all the prescribed Antiphons at every liturgical celebration. INTROIT: Venite Adoremus Come, let us worship the Lord. Let us bow down before the Lord in the presence of our Maker For He is the Lord our God! OFFERTORY: Perfice gressues meos Render secure my footsteps in Your paths; so that my feet do not slip; incline Your ear and hear my words. Display Your wonderful mercies, O Lord, Savior of those who place their hope in You. COMMUNIO : Introibo ad altare Dei I will go unto the altar of God, to the God who gives joy to my youth! PSALM 100: Serve the Lord with gladness come before Him with joyful singing! This February, I celebrate my 20 th Anniversary serving the Catholic Church as Director of Music. I feel extremely fortunate to have ministered to Christ s holy people in this capacity and am grateful for the love and support shown to me and my family from the people of Our Lady of Fatima Parish these past years! It is an honor to celebrate Holy Mass with such exceptional people. Please continue to pray for all our Music Ministers as they share their many gifts for the greater glory of God! Matthew Loucks
