2 Footnotes from Fr. Mark This week is truly a group of footnotes regarding some concerns around the parish. I would like to let all know that effective October 12th, a Friday, the office will be closing at 2:00 PM. It has been noticed that with very few people coming to the office then, the office will close at 2pm and reopen at 6:30 pm at night. Also you are able to conduct parish business as well on the weekend when you come to Mass at the Welcome Table in the narthex either before or after mass. If you need to pick something up as well, you can pick it up at the Welcome Table, or you can drop something off for us at the parish center as well at the Welcome Table. This is being done so as to welcome new members to our community and to allow for people who can t always make it to the parish offices during the week to be able to conduct their business when they are here for mass on the weekend. In September of 2015 there was an assessment of the physical plant that was commissioned by Fr. Jerome and the finance committee. That report has been here on the property for over a couple of years now and it has made its way to my desk for me to look at the report and to see what needs to be done. Upon looking at this report and seeing the extensive nature of the work needing to be done here on the physical plant, I have gone to talk to the Chief Financial Officer of the Diocese of Joliet and explained the situation which they are very well aware of here in the parish. There is currently a program that is going on in the diocese, which is allowing for parishes to have their facilities evaluated and to talk of how it could be possible for the repairs and changes to be made in the parishes. I have placed St. Matthew in the program and as I am writing this article I am waiting for the Diocesan Director of Properties and Facilities to come and meet with me to hear of their recommendations and their ideas for what could possibly be done here at St. Matthew s. I have listed previously some of the projects that need to be looked at and fixed, but there are also many other areas which need to be addressed in the immediate future. I will continue to update you on all the areas and projects that will need to be done here in the parish in the near future. There has been a good start to the school year both in our grade school and in our Faith Formation program here in the parish. We are now also beginning to start our Adult Education and our RCIA programs for the year. IF you know of someone or yourself who would like to learn more about the faith, or are in need of receiving sacraments you did not receive at a younger age, please call Deacon Mick, and he will help you to the proper place for your continuing your journey of faith. As I look ahead, there are some rather important dates for us coming up in our calendar regarding our faith journey as a parish in the future. November 2nd will bring us to All Souls Day and we will be having our Memorial Mass for our loved ones who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith on November 2nd at 7:00 PM. More information will follow in the weeks ahead. December brings us to the cultural and religious celebrations of the Spanish Speaking and the Filipino communities. From December 3 to 12 will be the Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The novena which runs for 9 days will conclude with a celebration on December 11 and 12. There will be more information to come in the near future. ON December 16 to 24, the Filipino community will be celebrating the Simbang Gabi. Their novena will run those days, and their celebration will be on December 22nd at the 5pm mass. There will also be more information regarding this in the near future. Finally the Posadas will be celebrated the same time as the Simbang Gabi here at the church as well. Along with the other Advent programs, you can see we are a very busy parish and one where it takes many people and all our efforts and our community spirit to allow the faith to grow and our love of God and neighbor continue to be seen by all. As we were reminded this week in our weekday reading at mass from the Book of Job, The Lord gives and the Lord takes, Blessed be the Lord. May you all have a good week, Fr. CEF Events, 2018 Annual Report Coming Soon Each year the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) mails its Annual Report to all CEF donors. For all parishioners interested in Catholic education funding in our diocese, this Annual Report serves as a significant informational guide. Since 1996, the CEF has awarded nearly $21 million in scholarships and $450,000 in ministry grants to schools and parishes in our diocese. For the benefit of many of our parish children, last year the CEF provided $2.1 million in financial aid to over 1,600 students. Watch for the CEF Annual Report in your mailbox or visit to learn more about important tax advantaged strategies you may consider for your year-end tax planning. ALSO! 5 HALLOWEEN TREATS AVAILABLE The Knights of St. Matthew Council 9893 will be making Tootsie Rolls available for sale in the narthex after all Masses October 13 and 14. All proceeds will be donated to charities serving persons with intellectual disabilities. Carton of Tootsie Rolls (300 pieces) - $30 or a sleeve (50 pieces) - $5. EXTRAORDINARY MINISTER OF HOLY COMMUNION TRAINING Are you a person of faith, with a love of the Eucharist, and a willingness to answer the call to ministry in our parish? Would you like to help distribute the Body and Blood of our Lord to his brothers and sisters? We are looking for new Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to assist in this ministry. We have scheduled training sessions to take place on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 10:00 am and on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 7:00 pm. Please preregister by contacting the Parish and choose the session that you would like to attend. All current Extraordinary Ministers, who would like a refresher for distribution of the Precious Blood and to catch up on recent changes are also invited to attend one of these sessions. We have resumed distribution of Holy Communion in both forms and need additional ministers at all Masses if we want to continue to do so. To serve as an Extraordinary Minister you must be an adult who has completed the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation) and are in good standing in the church (i.e. if married, you are married according to the law of the church). If you are unable to attend one of the scheduled sessions, please call the parish center to preregister, leave your name and phone number and we can contact you to make alternate arrangements for training.

The parishioners of St. Matthew and local citizens are great people who respond to those in need generously. 7 LOS ABRAZÓ Y LOS BENDIJO Hoy Jesús recalca que el Reino de Dios pertenece a los que son como los niños. Son confiados, tiernos y tienen el corazón abierto al amor. Se alegran cuando se dan cuenta del amor que Dios siente por ellos y están más que dispuestos a retribuir ese amor. Este es el modelo que Jesús nos presenta si queremos recibir el Reino de Dios. Debemos abrir el corazón y amar. Debemos bajar la guardia, sin importar por qué la hayamos montado, y recibir con alegría el amor que Cristo siente por nosotros. Es imposible que hagamos esto sin ayuda. Sólo la gracia de Dios nos permitirá hacerlo y esa gracia se nos concede generosamente y sin condiciones. Lo único que debemos hacer es aceptarla.
