2 A NOTE FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR...PRO-TEMP Dear parish family of Saint Matthew, Last week, Bishop Daniel Conlon appointed me as the temporary administrator of Saint Matthew parish. I am a retired priest of the diocese and have served as pastor for a whole bunch of parishes, the last two being Saint Isidore, right next-door and Mary Queen of Heaven in Elmhurst. Let me say at the outset that I am truly looking forward to being with you for a little while and doing whatever I can to proclaim the kingdom of the Lord. It is what I do best because God knows, administration is not what I do best. To tell you the truth I can t administrate my way out of a paper bag. So when I got the title of administrator I had to smile. I do have one really good administrative talent, however, and that is I am not afraid of talent and that I always surround myself with the best. I have been told that we at Saint Matthew already have the best in the way of our priests, our staff and those who are serving in our school. And trust me, I have every intention of letting them serve away. My prayer is that I don t get in the way of all the good they are doing. The other part of my title is Pro temp (That is high school Latin for, the time being ). And at my age (I am crawling up to 75) everything is for the time being. What is the old adage? The past is history and the future is a mystery. All we have is the gift of now and that s why it s called the present. And that, beloved people of Saint Matthew, is my intention, to live fully in the present moment and do whatever we need to do right now. Daniel Burnham once said make no small plans. I am now making no plans at all except to be present as much as I possibly can to you and the needs of this wonderful parish... for the time being. Today is the first Sunday of Advent. A new beginning. Since Christ is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and end, let us walk with him on the journey of life and if we stay in the path, the ending will be beautiful. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. From Catholic Household Blessings & Prayers CHANGE IN MASS SCHEDULE We will no longer be offering Mass in Spanish on Saturdays. December 8th will be the last Spanish Mass celebrated at 6:30 PM. We will continue to have a Spanish Mass on Sundays at 1:30 PM. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY As we begin the holy season of Advent we anticipate the joy of Christ s birth. It is also a time to reflect on all of the blessings God has given us. One way we can share those blessing is by assisting those in need in our parish and community through the St. Vincent de Paul Giving Tree program. Simply select an envelope from the trees located in the narthex or side entrance. Purchase a gift card in any denomination from local grocers or retailers listed on the envelope and return it in the regular collection at Mass by December 9th. Your gift will help those in need with food and household items and will help spread the joy of God s blessings and love this Christmas season. As always...thank you for your generosity! THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY The Feast of the Immaculate Conception on Saturday, December 8, is a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass times are: Friday, December 7 Vigil: 5:30 PM and 7:00 PM (Spanish) Saturday, December 8: 8:00 AM OPLATKI Oplatek (Christmas wafers) are available again this year for the Christmas Season. Each package is $2.00 and contains three wafers. They can be purchased during business hours at the Parish Center. The Christmas wafer commemorates a custom which is many centuries old. POINSETTIA PLANTS If you would like to make a donation for a Poinsettia Plant in memory of someone or in thanksgiving for favors received, please let the Parish Office know by dropping off your $16.00 donation to the office by December 12th.
