2 Rev. Gregor Gorsic, Pastor (630) ext. 312 My dear family of St. Matthew! Who likes to be depressed? Anyone?! It is wise, therefore, to try to avoid or lessen whatever feeds into depression, and last November, 2018, a report published in Science Daily came to the conclusion that Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram may not be great for personal well-being. The first experimental study examining use of multiple platforms shows a causal link between time spent on these social media and increased depression and loneliness. Let me emphasize this again: it is a CAUSAL link between time spent on some social media and increased depression and loneliness. This data came from an original study at the University of Pennsylvania, by Psychologist Melissa G. Hunt, who published her findings in the December Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology. The report s headline gives a nice summary: Social Media Use Increases Depression and Loneliness, Study Finds. And, again, to stress the point: for the first time, this Penn research connects Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram use to decreased well-being. So, in other words, if you stop using social media, you ll be happier! How does this happen? What does social media do to us? The conclusions of this research show that social media amplify the human relationships and feelings that we experience. The work speaks to the idea that limiting screen time on these apps helps avoid or lessen the depression we may be experiencing. It is a little ironic that reducing your use of social media actually makes you feel less lonely, she says. But when she digs a little deeper, the findings make sense. Some of the existing literature on social media suggests there s an enormous amount of social comparison that happens. When you look at other people s lives, particularly on Instagram, it s easy to conclude that everyone else s life is cooler or better than yours. But, you know what, in truth, IT ISN T! Maybe in some rare cases, but for the most part, people lie. People fantasize. People create the person they really wish they were. And you can do that anonymously in your basement so easily. Social media allows you to isolate, withdraw, create fantasies about your own existence while you sit there in the basement fantasizing about how many people follow you, how many people like you, how many people love you, how many fans you ve got, how many followers you ve got. You can make yourself out to be the biggest whatever you want to be. According to Science Daily, Hunt stresses that the findings do not suggest that 18- to 22-year-olds should stop using social media altogether. In fact, she built the study as she did to stay away from what she considers an unrealistic goal. But if you lessen or stop using social media, you ll be more connected with things and people. Why is this so important? I wanted to share with you this study to remind us all of the importance of staying connected in real ways with others in giving of ourselves, of our resources, of our experiences, of our time with others, so that you will truly become happier! Modern technology and social media are amazing ways of digitally staying connected, but it means nothing if we aren t spiritually, relationally, face-to-face connected first, in love and service to one another. Each one of us is called to be a Sign of Hope to others. One way we connect is through the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) which is coming up soon. We are truly connected through Jesus in His Body, the Church, and it is very evident in the summary video that puts flesh to the numbers (you can see the video at or directly on vimeo: vimeo.com/ ) you can see a few of the real people who are helped by the CMAA. Please remember that it is due to this annual appeal that I am with you today: a priest for over 21 years, because of the support you here at St. Matthew s and in parishes throughout the Diocese have given to our diocesan annual appeals over the past decades which has supported the education and formation of your priests. Tony Brandolino, our Joliet Diocese s Chief Development Officer, wants us to remember that our diocese is filled with signs of hope, for instance, when you visit the Daybreak Shelter and Shepherd s Table and witness Catholic Charities helping those in our community most in need; when you see our newly ordained priests, who are assisting Bishop Conlon in his mission to build the Kingdom of God here on earth; when you see the many men and women answering the Lord s call to vocations in the priesthood, permanent diaconate and religious life; when you visit our Catholic schools, where thousands of young people learn Church teachings alongside their standard subjects and attend Mass with their friends and teachers; when you see our parishes, which recognize Jesus in the diverse faces of our Church s membership today and ensure everyone is invited to worship at the Lord s table. Tony wants to emphasize that every gift is important to the success of the CMAA. Each pledge helps us reach our goal of $8.2 million - and allows us to provide signs of hope to so many through the 30 ministries our annual appeal supports. BLESSED When we think of the word Beatitude we think of today s discourse from Luke s Gospel, or the more familiar one from Matthew (which begins Blessed are the poor in spirit... ). Actually, beatitudes occur throughout the prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord (Jeremiah 17:7). Following his resurrection in John s Gospel, Christ proclaims, Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed (John 20:29). The evangelists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels as short reminders about the characteristics that one will find in a follower of Christ, characteristics that will help spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal blessings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the Beati, the Blessed, for they are the ones who lived the blessed life as described by Jesus throughout the Gospels. 5 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The first Monday of every month, St. Matthew Church volunteers host homeless clients at St. Isidore Ministry Center in Bloomingdale from 7 pm -7 am. A hot dinner, breakfast, and a bag lunch is provided to around 50 individuals each month. A Volunteer is needed for the 3-6 am shift, to provide a night presence, for early client wake ups, and to prepare coffee while in the company of another volunteer. Working and retired individuals have volunteered for this shift. Please contact Joan Sanew for more information at as soon as possible so it is filled before the March PADS. This volunteer opportunity is a great way for an individual or couple to directly impact the lives of those less fortunate in our community. Thanks for your consideration. Mary Lou Johnson and Bishop Blanchette Scholarships (for Catholic High School Students) Any student registered in St. Matthew Parish, planning to attend (or is currently attending) a Catholic high school in the fall of this year, is eligible to apply for these scholarships sponsored by the Council of Catholic Women (CCW). Applications can be obtained in the parish office or at the school office and must be returned by Monday, April 1 st to either location. A financial application sent to FACTS (ONLINE only) (requires 2018 tax information). The forms for parents and students, and an application form are parts of the process. Directions on completing the forms are included with the application. This is to inform you so you can begin the process immediately. If the student is currently in high school or a public school, a letter of recommendation from the principal or DRE needs to be included. Be sure that all forms are for the 2019 application. 7 BIENAVENTURADOS O DICHOSOS Cuando pensamos en la palabra bienaventuranza pensamos en el discurso de hoy del Evangelio según Lucas, o en el más familiar según Mateo (que comienza Dichosos lo que tienen espíritu de pobre... ). En realidad, las bienaventuranzas ocurren en los profetas y evangelios. Hoy, en Jeremías (con un eco en el salmo) oímos: Bendito el hombre que confía en el Señor (Jeremías 17:7). Luego de su resurrección en el Evangelio de san Juan, Cristo proclama: Dichosos los que creen sin haber visto! (Juan 20:29). Los evangelistas colocaron estos dichos por todos los evangelios como cortos recordatorios sobre las caracteríscas de quien sigue a Cristo, características que ayudarán a diseminar la Buena Nueva en esta vida y llevarnos a la dicha eterna en la próxima. En latín, los santos son llamados Beati o Beatos porque son aquellos que viven la vida feliz descrita por Jesús en los evangelios.
