Psalm 83:10 As we approach the celebration of St. Andrew Day we are witnessing the construction of our church temple. The foundation has been poured, and the steel framing is soon to arise in the coming days up to a height of five stories. Brothers and sisters - it is time! It is time for each person and family to make an offering for the temple of the Lord! Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; bring an offering, and come before Him; worship the Lord in holy array. 1 Chronicles 16:29 Hear King David again, Now set your heart and your soul to seek the Lord your God; arise and build the sanctuary of the Lord God so that you may bring the holy vessels of God into the house that is to be built for the name of the Lord. 1 Chronicles 22:19 Toward this end the St. Andrew Parish Council has issued this Church Furnishing and Iconography Sponsorship booklet. This booklet includes pictures of the holy vessels, iconography and various sacred furnishings that are to adorn the new St. Andrew Temple, together with the donation cost to sponsor the item. The purpose of the booklet is to obtain from St. Andrew parishioners and friends financial sponsorships of the various holy items. There are a great variety of items ranging in cost from as little as $200 to as much as $50,000. Please review this sponsorship booklet and decide on what you would like to offer to the Lord God for the new church temple. Group sponsorships are acceptable. Icons and sacred furnishing may be offered as memorials, and will be noted as such. I call upon every family in the parish to pledge something in the collection. Please turn in the pledge form and check as soon as possible. A 50% deposit is required to reserve the item in your name. Balance may be paid in one lump sum or in monthly payments over the next four months. 3 Iconostasis THE FURNISHINGS The iconostasis, or icon screen, divides the sanctuary from the nave of the church temple. The icon screen developed over many centuries into the elaborate pieces we have today. The iconostasis frames the movement of prayer, setting apart the altar as a holy place. Directly in the center, right in front of the altar, are a set of doors, called the Royal Doors, or the Holy Doors. Through the doors the priest brings to the altar the people s offering of bread and wine, and through the same doors serves the Eucharist to the people. The altar at St. Andrew will be made of marble and will look much like the one above. The iconostasis is called that because it has large icons that focus the worship of the community. On the right side of the doors will be an icon of Christ, and on the left an icon of the Theotokos. Next to Christ will be the icon of St. John the Forerunner and Baptist, and next to the Theotokos will be the icon of our patron, St. Andrew the First-called. On the north and south doors will be icons of the Holy Archangels: Michael on the north and Gabriel on the south. These doors are used by the altar servers, and depict the Archangels who minister to God in the heavens. The iconostasis is an indication that when we participate in the divine services, we are no longer on earth but in heaven. Donation: $50,000 3

4 Doors: Royal Doors for Iconostasis Made is Syria by a Syrian iconostasis maker. Donation: $5,000 All doors below are being made of solid oak in Antioch, Turkey, by a master-craftsman, and will have the holy icons carved in them by hand. Peter and Paul Each side is 3 tall x 12 high Donation: $15,000 OR $7,500 one side Great Baptistry Doors 8 x 6 : 2 doors with full length images of St. Symeon the Stylite and St. Symeon of the Wondrous Mountain. Donation: $5,000 each St. John Chrysostom Chapel Doors 8 x 6 : 2 doors with full length images of St. John Chrysostom and either St. Paul the Apostle or St. Anthusa, the Mother of St. Chrysostom - depending on who sponsors. Donation: $5,000 each Single Narthex Doors: 8 x 6 : On either side of the Grand Doors. Southern door is St. Andrew the First Called and the Northern door is St. Peter, the Prince of the Apostles. 5 Bishop s Throne There will be two different bishop s thrones: the bema, which is in the holy place behind the altar, and the throne which will be on the solea. The throne behind the altar, called the High Place, is where a bishop would be consecrated. The throne in the nave is usually on the south side of the church facing north, like the chanter s kliros, and this is where the bishop presides if he is not serving in the altar. Sometimes the throne has an icon of Christ the High Priest on it to remind the faithful that the bishop represents Christ to us, and that Christ is the most perfect high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man (Hebrews 8:1-2). St. Ignatius the Godbearer of Antioch describes the place of the bishop in the fellowship of the church: Let everyone respect the deacons as Jesus Christ, just as they should respect the bishop, who is a model of the Father, and the presbyters as God s council and as the band of the apostles. Without these no group can be called a church (Trallians). Thus, the bishop sits on a throne as a sign of the unity of the Church under Christ. Each local church, even if it is not a cathedral, has a throne for the bishop as a further indication of its communion with the universal Church. 6 Chanters Stand The chanter s stand which is in the current church building will be used for the right kliros in the south transept, but we also need a smaller, stand for the left kliros in the north transept. This will be smaller as it will be used less often and by fewer people, and also so as not to crowd the choir. Pictured to the left is the smaller kliros with a smaller, rotating stand for the service books. Donation: $10,000 Candle Stands and Holders In the new temple, we will have a small candle stand for purchasing devotional candles, and two candle holders where candles may be lit. These will be in the narthex and will have storage underneath for extra candles and other supplies. They will be carved to match the other furniture in the church. 7 Stasidia and Chairs for the Nave Stasidia, which is a Greek word from the root meaning to stand, are a style of seating which provides support also if one chooses to stand (hence the name). This style of seating is traditional in Orthodox churches, and they will be installed along the walls, in between the pillars, and in the rear of the church. The seats flip up so that one can stand or lean with arms resting on the armrests. We have these seats at the chanter s stand in our current church building. We will install approximately 100 stasidia in the new church temple. We will also need 150 of the chairs below.
