3 HOSANNA by Father Doughty Are you a king? Pilate asked, not did you say you were a king? He seemed not to dismiss the possibility that there might be some truth behind the Sanhedrin s complaint. In the many fictional representations of Our Lord s Passion and Death Mel Gibson s most recent move, The Passion of The Christ for one Jesus physical presence and words failed to move in any measure only the hardest of hearts. I have been listening to a reading of Lloyd Douglas book The Robe and am struck by how well the author captures the ambivalence of Pilate and the Roman soldiers. Pilate is disturbed in heart and mind by both the gentleness and courage of Jesus as well as by the gross injustice of the trial, but he is unyielding in his duty to maintain order at any cost. His decision to allow the crucifixion of Jesus represents a personal choice he made, perhaps for eternity, as did the decision of Judas to betray him, and of the Jewish authorities to reject him. With palm fronds held in our hands, we proclaim Jesus our king much as the crowds did on the first Palm Sunday. With a bit of hindsight and the help of the Holy Spirit, we know it to be true; the Church s witness throughout the past twenty centuries is far too compelling for us to deny it. Yet, we live in a culture that has quickly become anti-christian; that questions the fact of Jesus s life, his suffering and his death; that is too concerned with this life to consider thoroughly the news that a man has risen from the dead. We would be foolish to think ourselves immune to the pressures and enticements of this world and to their power to harden our hearts. Without a single- and whole-hearted devotion to his memory as given to us in our worship and prayer, we can easily lose ourselves as Pilate did to what is expedient and convenient for our lives. Jesus s presence to us, through word and sacrament, is every bit as real as that Presence Pilate experienced long ago in history, and it requires a choice from us in every moment. My kingdom is not here, was Jesus s reply to Pilate (from the Gospel of John); we might ask ourselves if we really belong to it. 12 MONTHS OF CHRISTMAS RAFFLE March s Prize: Waterford Linsmore Golden Rose Bowl MSRP: $250 JOHN HANLEY S ORDINATION TO THE DIACONATE We are anticipating eagerly John Hanley s ordination to the diaconate when - we pray - Cardinal Dolan calls him. The ordination is scheduled for Saturday, June 23rd at 9:00AM. The parish is planning to hire bus to St. Patrick s Cathedral for anyone interested attending. The bus will depart at 6:00 AM and return around 12:30 PM. Space is limited and the cost is $25 per person. JOSEPH CYO Our Fifth Grade Boys team won the Orange County CYO basketball championship lately, defeating St. John, Goshen and then going on to defeat the Ulster County Champions! They went 13-1 during the regular season. Our Sixth grade boys also won the Orange County championship. Congratulations to all our players, and many thanks to Tyler Ricci and Mary Alva and all the coaches and parent volunteers! NO TIME TO LOSE!!! In his recent Budget proposal, Governor Cuomo included a radical bill (S.7511) that would expand late-term abortions in New York State. The bill would eliminate New York's ban on late-term abortions allowing abortion for any reason in all nine months of pregnancy, empower non-doctors to perform abortions, and permit a baby born alive after an abortion to die of neglect and starvation. The enacted state budget requires three-way negotiation and must be finalized by April 1. The State Senate is our only hope to stop this tragedy. Please let your State Senator know that they must not allow the state budget to be used as a vehicle for expanding late-term abortion. For ease of communication in contacting your Senator, go to and click on "Take Action", which will provide a message you can send directly to your Senator. If you prefer to call Rep. Senator John Flanagan (Majority Leader), who will be part of the three-way negotiation, he can be reached at (631) , and say: "I am calling because Governor Cuomo included a radical abortion expansion proposal (S.7511) in his budget bills. This proposal would eliminate virtually all limitations on abortion in New York State, particularly on late-term abortions.
