2 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Do you ever struggle with prayer? Perhaps we can utter the same words the disciples said to Jesus 2000 years ago: Lord, teach us to pray (Luke 11:1). Luke s Gospel is awesome! It gives us so many examples of Jesus praying. Jesus prays when he feels joyful, when he s in agony, when he s alone, when he s in the company of others, during the day and at night, on a mountain and wherever ordinary life is happening. In Luke s Gospel, Jesus prays A LOT! The disciples of Jesus sensed his depth and peace that were fruits of his prayer. They knew he was connected in a deep way to a Power outside of this world. They wanted this and asked him, Lord, teach us to pray. My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I want to encourage you to practice praying! You ve heard me say it over and over again, if you are not in a routine of regular prayer, start now! Whether it s Lectio Divina with the Sacred Scriptures, Praise Music, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, or Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary, it is crucial that you spend an extended period of time in prayer everyday. Daily we are tempted to spend every waking moment with a device that distracts us from being still with God. When we do this, our soul s voice is being drowned out. You can do this, I promise! Not making time for prayer is like driving around in your car with flat tires. One of the simplest ways of getting in touch with your soul and entering into fruitful prayer is through a method of prayer taught by St. Ignatius of Loyola called, the Daily Examen ( the-examen). Through this practice, we become more aware of how God has been present to us in the past, and therefore more attuned to how He is acting in the present. It s like turning down the volume or hitting the pause button, and saying, I m sorry, did you say something? Typically, you will not have a crazy feeling of ecstasy after praying the Examen, even though it will happen occasionally. Rather it will give you awareness, and ultimately a sense of peace, that God is present in your daily life. My friends, you are never alone in your walk toward eternity. Prayer, especially the Examen, can help us avoid behaviors that bring temporary relief from what might be aching in our hearts. With a daily practice of prayer, regardless of the method, I guarantee your soul will grow, you will become more alive, and ultimately experience peace. Lord, teach us to pray! so that we may cultivate peace. By the way, our own Wendy Enloe (wenloe@olohr.com) is an expert in Ignatian Spirituality. She and her husband, Herb, are celebrating their 23rd year of living the Sacrament of Marriage and are the proud parents of three teenage sons. Fr. Josh will celebrate the Sacrament on Sunday, December 2, Preparation will include six weekly meetings of instruction. Sessions will begin on Sunday mornings from 9:00 am until 10:45 am in the Parish Center Room #1 here at Holy Rosary beginning October 7th through November 18th (does not include Oct. 18th due to the festival).
