Parting Waves Bible Story: Parting Waves (Moses and the Red Sea) Exodus 13:17 14:31 Bottom Line: You can do what you should even when things seem impossible. Memory Verse: Be strong and brave. Do not be afraid. Do not lose hope. I am the LORD your God. I will be with you everywhere you go. Joshua 1:9b, NIrV Life App: Courage being brave enough to do what you should do, even when you re afraid. Basic Truth: I can trust God no matter what. PLUG IN: Providing Time for Fun Interaction (10 minutes) Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today s story. Impossible Things What You Need: No supplies needed. Ask kids to list things that are impossible. Using one of their examples, ask kids what it would take to make the impossible possible. It is impossible to time travel but what if we invented a time machine, what impossible things would become possible? Or it is impossible to ride a dragon but what if we discovered a lair of friendly fire breathing dragons, what impossible things would become possible? Let s head to Large Group to hear a story of something else that just seems impossible or is it? Lead your group to the Large Group area. 1
SMALL GROUP: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (30 minutes) Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible story applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions. * If you don t have time to do all these activities, be sure to do activity #1. * 1. Cloud Pillar Go (application activity / review the Bible story) What You Need: Masking tape, cotton balls; 1 for every 2 kids, candles; 1 for every 2 kids Create a small tic-tac-toe board (3x3 grid) on the floor using masking tape. Divide the group into two teams: the Cloud team and the Fire team. Give the members of the Cloud team a cotton ball or cloud. Give members of the Fire team a candle or pillar of fire. Teams take turns answering questions pertaining to the Bible story. o If they get the question correct, a member of the team occupies a space in the grid by o placing his team s cotton ball or candle in a space of his choosing. If they answer incorrectly, the opposing team gets an opportunity to answer the question and to occupy a space on the grid. The first team to place three props in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row wins. Play as many games as you have questions for. If time allows and you re out of questions, make up your own. You could have kids list some impossible things that God has accomplished. Questions: - As the Israelites were fleeing from Egypt, how did they know God was traveling with them and guiding them during the day? (a pillar of clouds guided them) - As the Israelites were fleeing from Egypt, how did they know God was traveling with them and guiding them during the night? (a pillar of fire) - God instructed the Israelites to camp by what body of water? (the Red Sea) - Who chased the Israelites? (Pharaoh and the Egyptian army) - When the Israelites were trapped along the shore of the Red Sea, with the Egyptian army bearing down on them, things seemed impossible. What did God tell Moses to do? (raise his staff over the Red Sea) - It seems impossible to save the Israelites by simply raising a staff over the Red Sea, but Moses did what he should and listened to God. What happened to the water when Moses obeyed God and showed courage? (the Red Sea parted) 2
- How did the Israelites show courage? (they did what they should even though they were afraid and they walked on dry ground across the Red Sea) - What happened to the Egyptians when they crossed the Red Sea? (the water crashed down on them and destroyed them all) - What is the Bottom Line for today? [Bottom Line] (You can do what you should even when things seem impossible) The Red Sea story is such an amazing story! And it s completely true! Imagine what it would have been like to be an Israelite walking across the bottom of an ocean between two HUGE walls of water. I would have been VERY scared to do that! It would have been very hard for me to take that first step. I would be thinking, This is NOT happening! What if the walls of water come crashing down on me? And yet God asked the Israelites to trust Him and to show courage and to take the first step. You probably won t be asked to cross the Red Sea, but there will be times when things seem impossible and you will need courage to take the first step. Maybe you had a fight with your friend and you think it is impossible to be friends again. Or you had a major wipe out on your skateboard and you think it is impossible that you will ever skateboard again. You can have courage if you remember [Bottom Line] you can do what you should even when things seem impossible. 2. Impossible Feats (application activity) What You Need: Chair, coins Guide kids to try some of the Impossible Feats listed below: Drop a Penny: o Kids put their hands together so fingertips and palms are touching. o Place a penny between each kid s ring fingers. o While holding the penny and keeping their ring fingers straight, kids lower the rest of their fingers so their hand is clasped. o o Keeping their hands clasped, ask kids to drop the penny. Can kids do it? If not, why? (As kids try to drop the penny, their pinky fingers will want to straighten to drop the penny.) Paralyzed Finger: o Kids place a hand on the table or ground. o Kids bend their middle finger so both knuckles are on the table. o With the middle finger bent, kids try lifting, one at a time, their thumb, index finger, ring finger, and pinky finger. o Can kids do it? (They won t be able to lift their ring finger.) Lift Your Foot: o Kids stand against a wall so their ankle, knee, hip, shoulder, and head are resting on the wall. o Without moving any part of their body from the wall, kids try to lift their foot that is not touching the wall. o Can they do it? If not, why? What happens when they move only the foot touching the wall away from the wall slightly? Can they move the other foot now? 3
Figure 8 o Kids sit in a chair and move their right leg counter-clockwise. o At the same time, they draw a figure eight with their finger in the air. o Can they do it? What happens? Some kids may be able to do the following feats: o Raise only one eyebrow. o Wiggle your ears. o Curl your tongue. I love how hard you all tried to do the activities even though, as you tried, it seemed impossible to accomplish the task. Sometimes you will find yourself in situations that seem impossible. But remember, [Bottom Line] you can do what you should even when things seem impossible. Crossing the Red Sea seemed impossible for the Israelites, but what was the first thing Moses did? The very first courageous thing Moses did was to trust God no matter what! The Israelites were terrified and crying out loud and Moses said, Do not be afraid the LORD will fight for you. (Exodus 14:13-14, NIrV) Though the situation looked impossible, Moses trusted God would be there for them. And then Moses showed courage by listening to God. What did God tell Moses to do with his staff? (Raise the staff over the water.) And what did Moses do? (Moses obeyed.) Like Moses, when things seem impossible, you can show courage by trusting God and obeying God. [Make It Personal] (Think of a time when God asked you to do something that was impossible. Maybe a friend was really sick and you couldn t help them feel better. Or your parents are getting a divorce and you need to be strong and continue respecting and obeying them. Or you were asked to go on a mission trip to a country and you didn t even speak the language there. What did you do to show courage and take the first step even when it seemed impossible for you to make a difference?) 3. Crossing the Red Sea (memory verse activity) What You Need: Hopscotch Design Activity Page, bean bag, one set of Memory Verse Cards Activity Page, Bibles, one of the following: paper and tape, a hopscotch design taped to the floor Give kids a Bible and ask them to look up the memory verse for the month (Joshua 1:9b). Read the verse out loud together. Create a hopscotch design on the floor using the supplies provided. Place a Memory Verse Card in each of the hopscotch squares. Explain that the hopscotch squares are dry land. Kids must hop across the Red Sea on the dry land. For the first round, kids hop across the Red Sea, and as they land on a square, they say the part of the memory verse in each square. For the next round, on each kid s turn, he tosses a beanbag on one of the squares and removes the card from the square the beanbag lands on. Then he must hop across the Red Sea saying all the words of the memory verse, including the words on the missing card. 4
Before the next kid s turn, replace the missing card. Or for an added challenge, leave it off, so that it s increasingly harder for each subsequent kid who takes a turn! If necessary, refer to the Hopscotch Design Activity Page for a drawing of the hopscotch design and for directions on how to cross the Red Sea. There is a lot in this world that is impossible for me. It is impossible for me to breathe underwater or wiggle my ears. Time travel? Impossible for me, but nothing is impossible for God. Moses didn t have the ability to part the Red Sea but God did and God can choose to give us crazy abilities to do the impossible. When you trust God, [Bottom Line] you can do what you should even when things seem impossible. When you trust God, you can be strong and brave. Trusting God helps you not be afraid and gives you hope. When you trust God, you know He is with you everywhere you go, even when you are facing what seems impossible. Pray and Dismiss Ask kids if they have any prayer requests. Ask kids to think of one thing that they would like to ask God to help them with this week. Ask them to share with the group and pray for one another. Remember to ask them about this next week. Things change, and sometimes the impossible becomes possible, especially when you trust God. Showing courage can be difficult, but remember: [Bottom Line] you can do what you should even when things seem impossible. Let s pray. Dear God, You are awesome and we know nothing is impossible for You! But often things seem impossible for us and we need Your help to show courage and to be brave enough to do what we should, even when we are afraid. God help us to trust You no matter what! Thank You for being with us everywhere we go. Amen! Ask kids to share some of the Impossible Feats with their parents and siblings. Suggest spending some time this week as a family discussing actions you can do to show courage especially when things seem impossible. 5
Hopscotch Instructions 1. Kids start by hopping on one foot onto Squares 1, 2, and Then they split step so their left foot is on Square 4 and their right foot is on Square 5 simultaneously. 3. Kids hop on one foot to Square Then they split step so their left foot is on Square 7 and their right foot is on Square 8 simultaneously. 5. Kids hop on one foot to Square 9. 8 Read 1 Chronicles 28:20 Day 4 Have you wanted to do something really big? A big job takes a lot of work and planning! Solomon knew a little something about completing a task that might have seemed impossible. Completing the temple was a BIG job. But his father, King David, gave him some really good advice. When you face what seems like an impossible task, the best way to tackle it is to get to work! Just start. Trust God to give you the courage. And before you know it, an impossible task that you were afraid to start will get finished! Find a sticky note or small piece of paper and tape. Write the words Get to work on it. Tape this reminder around your house in a place where you and your family will see it. You might just inspire them too! Know that God will help you have courage when you choose to Get to work! Think about it: 1. How do you think it made Solomon feel to know that his important work was God s idea? 2. When you have a job to do, sometimes the hardest part is just getting started. Do you think that s true? Why? 3. What is a big task, maybe something you ve been daydreaming about, that God can give you the courage to do? Read 2 Corinthians 4:7-8 Day 1 Today involves COOKIES. Did that get your attention? Ask your mom or dad to buy you a tube of cookie dough (not slice-and-bake; just regular cookie dough). Note: It may take them your parents a day or two to get the dough; if so, go ahead and skip to Day 2 and then come back to this one when you ve got what you need. Now that you re ready, use your freshly washed hands to roll the dough into balls and put on a pan. Bake them in the oven using the directions on the package. In order to shape that dough into something useful, you had to apply some pressure. Just imagine your life as that raw cookie dough. God is shaping you into the person he can use to do mighty things for him. It takes courage to try new things, to lead, to make wise choices, and even to treat others the way you want to be treated. But in the end, when you are courageous, God can use you to do some pretty amazing things. Thank God for shaping you into a young man or young woman of courage. Think about it: 1. Have you ever felt pushed hard from all sides? Why? 2. When you feel that way, how can you make sure to stay courageous? 3. Can you look back and see a way that God has shaped you in a difficult time to be more like Him? Week Three --- 2nd - 5th
Read 2 Corinthians 4:9 Day 2 Have you ever worked hard on a Lego set only to have someone mess it up? Or maybe you were working hard on a project and someone tore it or spilled something on it. It s pretty frustrating when something you ve worked on gets destroyed. Courage can sometimes be like that. Sometimes, when you do the right thing, other people make fun of you. Or they talk about you behind your back. When that happens, you can feel a little bit broken-down or torn-up too. But God is with you when you choose courage. You might be knocked down, but you re not knocked out. Just like you can rebuild your Lego set or re-do your project, God can help you get back up and keep showing courage. Here s a way to remember that. Go ahead and tear this page in half. (It s OK; we re giving you permission!) Now tape the page back together. On the tape, write this verse, including the scripture reference (2 Corinthians 4:9) at the end. When things seem tough even impossible God can help you put the pieces back together! Ask God to help you get back up when you get knocked down. Read 1 Corinthians 16:13 Day 3 Have you ever tried to do something that seemed impossible? Sometimes you just have to repeat a verse like this one when you re scared because God is with you. He will help you have the courage you need, even when something seems impossible! Whenever you feel things are impossible you can have courage to do what you should do, even when it seems impossible! Today s verse is written below without any spaces! Place some hash marks between the words and read it aloud. Beonyourguard.Remainstronginthefaith.Bebrave. 1Corinthians16:13 Look for ways to be brave and trust that God is with you when things seem impossible. Think about it: 1. What do you think it means to be on your guard? 2. What do you have to be on your guard for? 3. How can this verse help you have courage this week? Think about it: 1. When was the last time someone made you feel all torn up inside? 2. Do you think it s hard or easy to tell someone when you feel that way? Who can you talk to? 3. What are some ways God helps you when you get knocked down? You can do what you should even when things seem impossible.
