I can t wait to sing with you today. But first, tell me: Who has a plan for you? CHILDREN and WORSHIP LEADER: [Bottom Line] God has a plan for me. WORSHIP LEADER: Yes, that s right! Let s sing our awesome new song all about how God has a plan for each and every one of us! SFX: Plan for Me Yay! What incredible singers you are. Who has a plan for you? CHILDREN and WORSHIP LEADER: [Bottom Line] God has a plan for me. WORSHIP LEADER: That s right! [Bottom Line] God has a plan for me. Our memory verse tells us just that. God has a plan, and it s a firm one. That means it s a good one, and it s a strong one. 1

2 Let s practice it. Are you ready to do it with me? (Pause.) Let s do it! The plans (hold up fingers 1, 2, 3) of the Lord (both hands point up) stand firm forever (stomp feet w/hands on hips), Psalm 33:11. (Hold out hands like a book.) Let s do it again. CHILDREN and WORSHIP LEADER: The plans (hold up fingers 1, 2, 3) of the Lord (both hands point up) stand firm forever (stomp feet w/hands on hips), Psalm 33:11. (Hold out hands like a book.) (Repeat several times.) WORSHIP LEADER: Way to go! God has a plan for us, and He will take care of us. He ll take care of us in the morning and at night. Hey, let s sing about that! SFX: Take Care of Me I love singing about our God who made us and loves us. Yes, God made you, and He has a plan for you. Introductory Sketch (NOTE: Each week the host will paint on a separate canvas for a total of four canvases. Week 4, all four canvases will be combined to create one large heart picture.) What You Need: Canvases 1 and 2 (from Week 1); easel; card table; black, red, green, and blue paint; 3 unlabeled jars; 3 jars; black permanent marker; and 2 paintbrushes What You Do: Before Large Group: Step 1: Paint just the pencil outline on canvas two with black paint. (It should have part of the heart picture penciled in on the lower left section of the canvas as directed Week 1.) Step 2: Place the easel in the middle of your storytelling area. Place the Week 2 canvas on the easel. Step 3: Place the card table to the side of the easel. Set the three jars of paint (red, yellow, and blue) and the paintbrushes on top of the table. What You Say: (Host walks in holding the painted canvas from Week 1. He is 2

3 turning it from side to side as if trying to figure out which direction it should go.) HOST: Hey, friends! I m so glad you re here! My name is [Host s name], and I ve been taking art classes with Mr. Magenta. He s my art teacher. He left me instructions for painting a beautiful masterpiece, only I can t figure out what the picture is going to be. Maybe you can help me? (Turn the painting so the children can see it.) This is what I ve painted so far. Could it be... a horse s tail? (Shake your head no.) Nah. I don t know a lot of pink horses. But, if I did, that would be totally cool! Oh, I know! (Pretend to get an idea. Put the canvas close to your head.) It s a painting of a tongue! (Stick out your tongue and begin mumbling because your tongue is still out.) See? See? It looks like a painting of a tongue, right? (Close your mouth and drop the canvas down. Look at the canvas.) You re right. It s not a painting of a tongue, either. I guess I ll have to keep following Mr. Magenta s plan to see what it s going to be. (Prop the painted Week 1 canvas where the children can see it and walk to the easel.) This is what I m supposed to be painting today. Mr. Magenta painted this on my canvas so I would know where to paint. He said I could use any color I want to paint all of this part. (Point to the section on the canvas that is inside the heart outline. Then lean in and begin to whisper.) Can I tell you a secret? (Pause.) I m not a very good painter. (Stand straight and speak with a normal voice.) 3

4 It s okay, though. I m going to try really, really hard. And since you re here, you can help me! Mr. Magenta said I could paint the inside of this line any color I want. I could use this color. What color is this? (Hold up the jar with green paint.) Yes, this is green. Or I could use this color. What color is this? (Hold up the jar with red paint.) Right again! This is red. Ooo! This color would look nice. What color is this? (Hold up the jar with blue paint.) Yes, this is blue. You really know your colors! But how do I pick which color to use for my painting? What if I pick the wrong color? What if I ruin the masterpiece and it s not a masterpiece anymore? I really want to follow Mr. Magenta s plan to paint this canvas, but it is so hard! (Look at the children, back at the paints, back at the canvas, back at the paints again, and back at the children.) You know what? I m just going to go for it. This is hard, but I can do it. I pick... BLUE! (Host begins painting with the blue paint.) Wait! I don t like the blue. I want RED! (Grab the red paint and add it to the blue so they mix together.) That s not red... or blue! It s... what color is that? (Pause.) Yes, it s purple. I LOVE purple. Red and blue make purple. I ll paint it purple! (Just as Host is finishing, Storyteller enters carrying a Bible.) STORYTELLER: Hi there, [Host s name]! Your painting is looking very... purple. I like it! What is this part going to be? (Storyteller points to the space inside the outline.) 4

5 HOST: I m not really sure yet. I m supposed to follow my art teacher s plan to create a masterpiece, but it s really hard sometimes. STORYTELLER: That sounds like the Bible story I m about to tell our friends here. It s about a guy named Joseph who followed God s plan even when it was hard. It worked for him, though, and his life story turned out to be a real work of art a masterpiece. HOST: Hmm. Joseph s story sounds like something I need to hear. I ll be sure to listen to the story while I m in the back washing out my paintbrushes. I can t let the paint dry or it will mess them up. Bye, friends! Thanks for your help today! You re the best! 9:22/11:22/4:52/6:52 9:37/11:22 (Host sets his/her painting beside the Week 1 canvas to dry and exits with the jars of paint and paintbrushes.) Bible Story What You Need: Bible, Joseph without Coat, Potiphar, and Joseph in Jail Activity Pages; white cardstock; Joseph with Coat and 11 Brothers (from Week 1); 14x14-inch framed corkboard; easel; card table; and thumbtacks What You Do: Before Large Group: Make one copy of Joseph without Coat, Potiphar, and Joseph in Jail on white cardstock. What You Say: (Storyteller places the corkboard on the easel and lays the Bible, thumbtacks, and Activity Pages down while greeting the children.) STORYTELLER: Hi, friends! It s great to see you again! My name is [Storyteller s name], and I have another part of Joseph s true story to tell you. It s found right here in this book. Tell me, what is the name of this book? (Hold up the Bible.) CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: The Bible! STORYTELLER: You got it! This is the Bible and this is Joseph. (Open the Bible and lay it aside. Pin Joseph with Coat Activity Page in the middle of the corkboard.) 5

6 Remember Joseph? His dad made him a special coat and he had a lot of brothers eleven, to be exact. Count them with me as I put them on our board. (Pin the 11 Brothers next to Joseph with Coat on the corkboard. Count out loud as you point to them.) CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11! STORYTELER: That s a lot of brothers! Were Joseph s brothers happy or mad that their dad gave Joseph a special coat? (Pause for response.) Yes, they were mad. His big brothers were so mad that they threw Joseph in a hole and sold him to strangers. (Take down the Joseph with Coat picture.) Then the strangers took Joseph away to a faraway place called Egypt. That s when we say, Oh, no, Joe! Say that with me. CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: Oh, no, Joe! (Take down all of the brothers and pin Joseph without Coat to the corkboard.) Even though Joseph was sad and alone, He trusted that God had a plan and that God s masterpiece His work of art wasn t finished yet. When Joseph got to Egypt, a powerful man named Potiphar gave him a job. (Pin the Potiphar Activity Page beside Joseph without Coat. ) Joseph did everything Potiphar told him to do. If Potiphar said to clean the floors, Joseph cleaned the floors. If Potiphar said to bring him lunch, Joseph brought him lunch. If Potiphar said to juggle seahorses... well, maybe not juggle seahorses (laugh), but if Joseph could juggle seahorses for Potiphar he probably would have! God blessed Joseph, and Potiphar thought Joseph was a great guy. But then something terrible happened. 6

7 (Take down the Potiphar and Joseph without Coat Activity Pages and pin the Joseph in Jail Activity Page on the corkboard.) Joseph was put in jail for something he didn t even do. Everyone say, Oh, no, Joe! CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: Oh, no, Joe! STORYTELLER: If I were Joseph, I think I would be so mad! But instead, Joseph trusted that God had a plan. Joseph was a good friend to the people in jail with him and did the best he could while he was there. The guy in charge of the jail liked Joseph so much he put Joseph in charge of the other guys in jail with him! No matter where he was, Joseph trusted that God had a plan for him. And the best part is that Joseph s story wasn t finished yet. It might not look like much of a masterpiece right now with him being in jail, but just wait and see what happens in Joseph s story. Joseph trusted that God had a plan, even when it was hard. There are more pieces to this work of art! I want us all to remember that when things don t go our way, or when we re sad or mad, God still has a plan no matter how hard it gets! Who has a plan for you? CHILDREN and STORYTELER: [Bottom Line] God has a plan for me! STORYTELLER: Louder! Who has a plan for you? CHILDREN and STORYTELER: [Bottom Line] God has a plan for me! STORYTELLER: He sure does! And when we trust God s plan, He can turn our lives into a work of art. That s the truth, friends. You better believe it! Now it s time to close our eyes and put our hands in our lap so we can talk to God. PRAYER STORYTELLER: Dear God, there will be times in our lives when bad things will happen that we won t understand, just like with Joseph.
