5 Student Books All of our Edexcel GCSE Reliious Studies Student Books are packed with motivatin resources in an easy to use format to help students aim for the best possible results. Aims and objectives for each section link directly to the specification and hihliht what students need to know. Section 1: Believin in God Believin in God This picture shows youn people deep in worship of God. Christian belief and practice is somethin that is an active and relevant part of the lives of many youn people today. This is important to remember when studyin this topic. Even if you find the idea of belief in God hard to understand, be open to thinkin about why people do believe, not just to offerin reasons why you think they shouldn t! Section 1: Believin in God 3 Introduction This section is based on the study of one reliion only and we have focused on Christianity. In this section, you will learn about what Christians believe about God and how they come to believe this, possibly throuh their upbrinin, their appreciation of the world around them, or even throuh seein a miracle or havin a reliious experience. You will also learn how Christians deal with problems that challene their belief, and why some people do not believe in God at all. Aims and objectives for this section By the end of this section you should be able to understand, explain and describe... what Christians believe about the nature of God and the ways in which they come to believe the desin and causation aruments the scientific challenes to belief in God the problems of unanswered prayer, and evil and sufferin the treatment of reliious matters on radio and television prorammes... and express your own opinions, ivin reasons for them. Key words anosticism atheism conversion free will miracle moral evil natural evil numinous omnibenevolent omnipotent omniscient prayer Fascinatin fact Accordin to the website there are 34,000 different Christian roups or denominations in the world, and over 2,000 million individual Christians. Starter Activity Take a sheet of A3 paper, turn it landscape, and write GOD in the middle of it. As a class, or in roups or pairs, create a mind map focusin on words that you think miht describe God, attitudes believers and nonbelievers have towards him (or her!) and beliefs and practices associated with God. For example, you could start with Father (Christians speak of God as their Father), the Bible (believed to be the word of God) and worship (activities directed towards God to show him thanks and praise). When you have finished studyin this section you can turn back to this sheet and see if you want to add, chane or take away any words. Sample paes from Edexcel GCSE Reliious Studies Unit 1A: Reliion and Life - Christianity and Islam Student Book Key words from the specification are hihlihted. Fascinatin facts and contemporary content throuhout help students to develop interest in the subject matter. 5

6 Student Books Each section includes enain features desined to challene students and provide points for discussion to help build and strenthen knowlede. Packed with photos and artwork to enae students in reliious issues and provide discussion points. Challene boxes help students to build their knowlede. Section 1: Believin in God Section 1: Believin in God Reliious experience: the numinous and conversion Learnin outcomes By the end of this lesson you should be able to: describe different types of reliious experience explain the nature of reliious experience evaluate different peoples and your own beliefs about reliious experiences. What can you see in this picture? Activities 1 The picture shows a statue of the Virin Mary weepin. Is this the best explanation? 2 Do you think that people can really hear God s voice or see visions? Give reasons for and aainst your views. Today, manypeople come to faith in God after havin areliious experience, whichconvinces them that God exists.suchexperiences include: seein a reliious vision witnessin a miracle havin their prayers answered a feelin of God s presence near them (numinous) havin a life-chanin experience which leads them to commit themselves to God (conversion). mystical experiences experiencin God s voice or a reliious vision holiness havin the character of bein set apart for God spurposes near death experience an experience after clinical death and before resuscitation Many people claim to have had a reliious experience some studies suest that it may be as many as 75 per cent of the population. They need not be dramatic experiences, but could simply be an answered prayer.the experience may affect how a person views the world and chane their life in an important way. Mystical experiences include hearin God s voice or seein a vision, possibly of Jesus or other reliious fiures or symbols. In the Old Testament, Isaiah had a mystical experience when he saw the throne of God and heard the anels wonderin who would be a messener for God. Isaiah was overwhelmed by the holiness of his experience, sayin: Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the Kin, the Lord of hosts Isaiah 6:5 Other people have had a near-death experience, sometimes durin an operation or when they lose consciousness after an accident. Althouh they are resuscitated (brouht back to life by doctors), they believe that, before this, they have visited the afterlife, sometimes meetin a reliious fiure, passin throuh a tunnel of liht, and perhaps bein iven a review of their life. Not everyone arees that these are reliious experiences, but, for some, these events make them reconsider how they have lived their life and commit their future to God. An artist s impression of what a near-death experience is like. conversion a chane from one faith to another or from no faith to belief numinous eneratin afeelin of awe and wonder awe a sense of holy fear and wonder Conversion Some believers claim to have had a conversion experience, durin which their beliefs chane from one faith to another, or from no faith to believin in God. Conversion experiences can be quite dramatic. One of the best known accounts is that of Paul, a learned Jew who opposed the early Christians. His experience is described in Acts 9:4 5: As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a liht from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the round and heard a voice say to him, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? Who are you, Lord? Saul asked. I am Jesus, whom you are persecutin, he replied. God made him blind for three days durin which time he came to a lastin faith in Jesus. Some conversion experiences are much entler, and come after years of quiet searchin for a relationship with God. These, alon with other reliious experiences, can be described as numinous they enerate a feelin of awe and a feelin of bein very close to God or a sense of how different God is from humans. John Wesley, who founded the Methodist Church, describes an experience of this kind: I felt my heart stranely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ... for salvation; and an assurance was iven me, that he had taken away my sins... and saved me from the law of sin and death. Activities 1 Describe two different types of reliious experience. See if you can find some recent examples on the Internet. 2 Explain how havin a reliious experience miht lead someone to believe in God. Challene Charismatic experiences usually take place amon a roup of reliious believers when they worship toether. They feel God workin in them throuh the power of the Holy Spirit and they may speak in tonues (lanuaes they do not know), or heal others throuh the power of God. For discussion Do you think God really does communicate with people? If so, how does he do it? How else could reliious experiences be explained? Give reasons for your views. Summary Some people come to believe in God throuh a reliious experience. This is an event throuh which they feel God s presence, hear his voice or see a vision. Reliious experiences may take many different forms and take place in different situations. 9 Sample paes from Edexcel GCSE Reliious Studies Unit 1A: Reliion and Life - Christianity and Islam Student Book For discussion boxes provide opportunity for debate. 6

7 Student Books Throuhout the Student Books you ll find ResultsPlus boxes hihlihtin ways students can improve their exam answers, sections flain common mistakes and a real variety of activities desined to et students involved in the topics. Diarams throuhout illustrate key concepts and processes to strenthen knowlede. Activity boxes provide students with lots of opportunities to embed understandin. Section 1: Believin in God 1.5 The desin arument for the existence of God Section 1: Believin in God 14 Learnin outcomes By the end of this lesson, you should be able to: explain the desin arument for the existence of God evaluate the desin arument and express your own opinions about it. desin the appearance of order and purpose analoy a way of comparin two similar thins to hihliht their similarities Here are two pictures of the same bird a robin. In the first, he is alive and well but in the second, taken a few days later, he has died. Do you think that this shows the universe to be beautiful or uly? Say why? 15 Examples of thins people have desined. People have always had to desin thins that is, to rearrane and chane matter in order to make it useful, functional or beautiful. For example, in these photoraphs, we see the Sydney Opera House and a space shuttle. Neither of these thins came about by accident they were desined. Many people believe that the world, and indeed the universe, were desined. They did not come about just by accident or throuh a bi ban, but were desined and made by God. Some of the reasons they believe God desined the world are: It appears to be so well ordered. It is so beautiful. The thins in it appear to have a purpose for which they were desined. All the parts had to be put toether in the riht way for them to fulfil that purpose. How doweknow ifthe world was desined? The scientist Isaac Newton was convinced of the existence of adesiner by lookin at his thumbprint. Because all human beins have aunique thumbprint, he arued that this was evidence of the existence of adesiner God. The beauty of the world doesn t seem to serve any practical purpose and this could also suest alovin God who wants to make thins attractive for his creation. However, this arument depends on us acceptin that the universe is beautiful and orderly. Some people arue that it is uly and chaotic, and we cannot therefore base an arument for God s existence on the claim that it needs a desiner. Activity Make a list of examples that show both the beauty of creation and its uliness. Do you think they prove there is a desiner God, or not? Does the desin arument work? The arument from desin is constructed from a series of observations about the world that leads to the conclusion that God exists. Overview of the desin arument Desin is the result of intellient thouht Paley swatch The universe has the appearance of desin This suests that a bein with intellience and thouht desined the universe Afamous philosopher William Paley( ) made an analoy between the watchand the world, whichboth have manycomplex and distinctive features.this kind of comparison helps by lookin at somethin familiar in order to understand somethin less familiar and reachaconclusion as to whether it is morelikelytohavecome about by chance or to have been created by an all-powerful God. For discussion Is the arument from desin a convincin proof of the existence of God, or not? How would Paley explain earthquakes. Activities 1 List all the facts in support of the desin arument, and then list all those aainst. Which are the most convincin and why? 2 If you were God, would you have desined the world differently? What chanes would you have made? 3 The desin arument fails to provide convincin proof of the existence of God. Do you aree? Give reasons. Summary The universe is too complex to be desined by any bein other than God Therefore God exists Some believers arue that the appearance of the world supports belief in God. The arument from desin is based on the principle that the world is so orderly and purposeful that it cannot have come about by chance but is rather the work of adesinin God. ResultsPlus Watch Out! Many candidates confuse the causation arument with the desin arument.
