1 Broadcaster The FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH {xtüà Éy à{x v àç January A Monthly Publication of The Davenport, Iowa fpcdavenport.or Volume 42, No. 1 The Season of Epiphany, the Season of Liht Epiphany is the celebration of God s manifestation or self-revelation to the world in Jesus Christ. In particular, we celebrate the revelation of God s promise and purpose to the nations of the world, as the mai came from the East to worship to the Christ child, and God s covenant of race is extended to all who believe the ood news of Christ Jesus. The symbolism of liht is important: not only because of the star that uided the mai, but as it relates to the briht dawnin of God s self-revelation in Christ. An excerpt from the Companion to the Book of Common Worship (Geneva Press, 2003, 94-95): The word epiphany (from the Greek epiphaneia or theophaneia) means appearance or manifestation of God, and has roots in the word for sunrise or dawn. In ancient times, an epiphany meant either a visible manifestation of a od or the solemn visit of a ruler venerated as a od. For Christians, Christmas marks the comin of God to us; Epiphany celebrates the appearance of the Lord in the midst of humanity. The Christmas stories of the birth of Immanuel declare the divine entry; Epiphany extols the revelation of God to the world in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. In our celebrations of Christmas and Epiphany we rejoice in the dawnin and the arisin of Liht in darkness. Epiphany not only discloses the Savior to the world but also calls the world to show forth Christ, to be witnesses to God s true Liht. The timeless mystery of the incarnation, God in flesh, leads us forth to show and tell of Christ as God s ift of race and salvation for all persons. Some call this onoin epiphany the work of Christmas. Prayer for Epiphany God of endless liht, you sent a star risin from darkness, uidin seekers and saes, overwhelmin us with joy. Let the splendor of your dawnin liht row in us and in all the world until the whole creation shines with your lory; throuh Jesus Christ our liht. - Matthew 2:1-12 hank you A hue thank you to all friends and members who purchased ifts for this year s Anel Tree! The church provided for 42 families consistin of 124 children. This year, a majority of the families served were in our church s zip code area of 52803; it s wonderful we had the opportunity to serve so many children in our own neihborhood. Also, thank you to the volunteers who helped sort ifts in December and to everyone who delivered ifts out to the families! Davenport, Iowa fpcdavenport.or

2 PASTOR S COLUMN & CONGREGATION NEWS FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Rev. Richard E. Miller Out the Study Window Bein Good Stewards It can be easy to foret that God created the world we live in and us as well; that God created the air we breathe, the sun that warms the earth, and plants and animals; that God is the one that ave us our brains to think. The Psalmist reminds us that The earth is the Lord s and everythin in it, (Psalm 24:1) and in that verse we bein to understand that we are merely temporary possessors (or stewards) of thins that God owns. We are born with nothin and we take nothin with us when we leave. It all just ets passed on to someone else. So, as ood stewards we need to continually discover creative and effective ways to pass on what we have been iven by God. I feel blessed to be a pastor who leads practical people. Toether, we acknowlede that manain our finances is the tricky business of balancin our lives between not bein wasteful like Jesus talks about in John 6:12 and not livin with a poverty mindset either. It is easy to fall towards one of the extremes, but far more challenin to walk in the middle, with balance. That balance is what Jesus asks us to pursue as we seek to be practical stewards of our finances. It is an honor for me to lead a church where members seek to row in their ivin, expand their involvement in ministry, and wrestle with what it means to follow Jesus in the 21 st century. We have much to be thankful for, but we also have more work to do as well. We have experienced two ood years of financial stability. Durin those years we bean challenin ourselves to expand our witness throuh worship, mission, and ministry to youn adults, children, youth, and their families. In 2013 we will experience even more focus on these areas of ministry. So, as ood stewards we all need to continually discover creative and effective ways to pass on what we have been iven by God Budet News The past two years have brouht much joy to the Finance Office of the church. For 2012 we presented a balanced budet and, due to your ood stewardship, we are lookin to do the same for Our current budetin process has worked well the past two years. In Auust a joint budet meetin is held with the committee chairs of the Session and the Deacons, the Stewardship Committee and staff. We discuss the dream budet and how we can achieve our oals throuh efforts of the stewardship campain. We meet aain in the middle of December to discuss the plede drive and how close we are to attainin our oals. This year the Joint Budet Committee met on December 13 and all were pleasantly surprised to see that we were about $15,500 away from attainin the dream budet fiures. Some calls will be made by the end of the month and we are confident that the remainin funds will be raised. As of December 20, we have commitments of $810, in pledes (326 units pledin), an increase of $13, over last year s fiure at this time ($796, units pledin). The most excitin fact is that we have 36 new pledes for 2013! We hope to finalize the 2013 budet at the January 21, 2013, Session meetin and then we will be able to communicate the final budet to the conreation. This information will also be presented at the Annual Conreational Meetin to be held on February 24, 2013, at 10:00 AM. Per Capita - $33 per member Each January First Church is assessed a per capita contribution by the Presbytery. This year it is $33 per member.
