1 Aldersgate United Methodist Church July 2011 Issue 81 Open Hearts, Open Minds and Open Doors Pastor s Ponderings On a Journey I m writing from some unknown place in British Columbia as Ken, Magen, Simon, Wesley and I make our way toward Juneau. As we travel, we ve witnessed outlandishly gorgeous scenery, stopping to enjoy a swim or a hike. We have a destination with a plan and an itinerary that will enable us to arrive in Juneau on time; but with every turn in the road I hear myself gasp at another vista that takes my breath away. So far, there have been a few things that have held us up, such as traffic and train crossings. We even got lost in Vancouver, yet here we are, sitting in a cabin by a wild river soaking in the blessings of this transition. This journey has been inspiration for my first article with the Aldersgate newsletter. As I m on a geographical journey toward you now, I can t wait to join you on a spiritual journey. Together, we will have opportunities to take in blessings that are beyond our imagination and simply gasp at the miracles before us. We will continually hold that divine destination before us, yet we will remind one another that although we are headed to somewhere new tomorrow, we must enjoy where we are today. Time and time again there will be roadblocks along the way and I m certain, we will all become lost at one time or another. The good news is this: We are not on this journey alone. So when we become too distracted with the maps, roads and rules we re meant to follow, our traveling partner may say Look, there s a blessing! Isn t it wonderful? 2 Aldersgate News The Church Office will be closed on Monday July 4th in observance of Independence Day. Printer available ~ The Church office is getting rid of a HP Office Jet G85xi color Printer/Fax/Scanner/Copier with 2 black and 1 color ink cartridges, cost: we are asking for a donation for this printer. If you are interested in this printer please contact Amy Ely in the Church Office Don't miss out!!!! Over the summer, Aldersgators are invited to set up a "Meet and Greet" gathering at their homes. Ask several other Aldersgate families and the Boegli s to join you, provide a beverage and some sort of dessert, snack, etc., and have an evening of getting to know each other better. Very casual. Invite folks that you don't know that well, and you'll learn some stories about them, as well. Everyone has a story to tell, and we need to be listening. If you are not in a situation where your home is available, hold the evening at the church. Just check with Amy Ely on availability of space. Pastor Susan is excited to be here and wants to hear our stories, wants, needs, dreams for Aldersgate. This is stuff she needs to hear to help her serve us in the years to come. Don't be shy! 3 CHURCHES INVITE COMMUNITY TO SUMMER FAMILY FAITH NIGHTS Hey kids, grab your favorite grown-ups and mark your summer activities calendars. Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, and St. Brendan s Episcopal Church invite the community to three free Family Faith Nights, 5:00 to 7:30 p.m., on the following Sundays; July 10, and August 14. Family Faith Nights are designed for families of all ages, shapes and sizes (moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, best friends, brothers, sisters, and kids of all ages). Each night features a different theme and the activities - dinner, worship, and faith building activities - surround that theme. Everyone is encouraged to attend all three nights. The July 10 Family Faith Night is a Top Secret Spy Adventure and will take place at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. On August 14 it will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church and features a Huddle Up Football Adventure. On the first night, families will receive a passport. If you have your passport stamped at all three Family Faith Nights, you can turn it in to receive a special gift (one per family group). We need several volunteers: adults who will accompany children who come without adults, two to be greeters. 4 Continued from page 1 around us. We can share our joys and watch them multiply, and we can share our concerns and feel the weight of the burden ease. Finally, since we will all lose our way some time or another, it is reassuring to know that those sojourning along with us will seek us out and lead the way back to that Divine Destination. I am beyond thrilled to continue my spiritual journey with you. As a sojourning sister, I anticipate a journey that includes vistas, blessings, challenges, and loss, yet it will all be wonderful because we will all walk together with the One who shows us the way. Can t wait to meet you Susan What s New in Aldersgate UMC Community Thank you everyone who fed the Pigs Our Pigs on a Mission for June raised $43.53 for UMCOR s Spring Storms advance. June s Attendance: Our Red Wagon gathers food for our Valley Food Bank, unless otherwise specified. This little wagon will be making an appearance every Sunday. Please bring in any non-perishable items to help us fill the wagon! July s Glory Hole Servers will be the Williams family, they will be serving on Saturday July 16th. We know that they would love help, so contact them if you would like to help or contact Keith Palke. We would like to have a Birthday/Anniversary Section in this newsletter so if we can wish you a Happy Birthday, Happy Anniversary or other special occasion please us, at: aumcjuneau@gci.net, your information and I will include it in the newsletter. 5 It s not too late to get enrolled and matched for the upcoming school year. Big Brothers and Big Sisters are needed in all the Valley and Downtown elementary schools. Some of the biggest supporters of the School Program are Juneau teachers. They see students come back from their time with their mentor filled with confidence, smiling big, ready to learn and eager to succeed. It only takes an hour a week to make a BIG difference! Enroll today, get interviewed over the summer and be matched next school year. It s that simple! Call or visit Eagle River United Methodist Camp in Juneau is seeking a resident year round manager. It really brought tears to my eyes when I opened it. What a delightful surprise. We are having sun, but it seemed like Juneau the last couple of days with rain and overcast. Keta (my dog is now called by an Alaskan name) loves that the church office has a fenced in yard. She is also liking the cool and calm of the office. All my stuff arrived OK. Thanks again to Lyall and Alice for helping tie down the car luggage soft-top. Immense thanks to Lyall, Josh, Keith, Bob, Charlie and Barb for helping get my things mailed. Thanks to Jo McDowell and Pastor Cindy Roberts for helping pack! The migration - as my brother-in-law called it - was successful. The ferry was fun. We saw a brown bear sow and 3 cubs from the ferry. This was esp. good as we had not seen bears in Juneau. We saw porpoise, humpbacks, a deer and perhaps an orca (I think it was a dahl porpoise). Only one day with some rain while we were on the ferry. Great drive thru redwoods and a stretch of the coast. Much work to do and I haven't even started work! Take care, Aloha! Judy Shook Pigs on a Mission: July s Mission ~ The PET Project The Personal Energy Transportation (PET) Project s mission is to provide appropriate mobility for all of God s children in need. We seek to provide mobility first for those in greatest need and with the least resources in poor or underdeveloped countries. The PET Project is a part of the ministry of Jesus Christ, whose disciples said, In the name of Jesus Christ, arise and walk. Acts 3:6

6 Celebrating our Ministries with Pastor Judy Pastor Judy s last Sunday with us was June19th and we celebrated our ministries together that Sunday A wonderful potluck after Sunday Worship was shared by all.
