Jesus tells us to travel light. Most of us carry too many things around with us. This goes not only for purses and luggage, but also for excessive emotional and spiritual baggage. These issues can and often do clutter up our lives and deny us the peace and freedom that comes from following Jesus. Sometimes we are reluctant to throw them away because we are afraid. Sometimes we hold on to them because we believe that the troubles we have are better than the ones that might come our way if we let our old ones go. In either case our unwillingness to hand over to God our excessive emotional and spiritual baggage betrays our lack of faith in God s infinite goodness and love. God cares for us more than a mother could ever care for her child. When we pray we should not only ask for God s help, but also ask for the help we need to know His love for us. 1

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 15, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Francis de Sales, Bishop and Doctor of the Church (1567-1622) The son of aristocrats, Francis de Sales was born on 21 August 1567. He was baptized Francis Bonaventure, after two great Franciscan saints. His father wanted him, the first of six sons, to attend the best schools in preparation for a career as a magistrate. In 1584 Francis attended a theological discussion about predestination, convincing him of his damnation to hell. A personal crisis of despair resulted. This conviction lasted through December 1586. His great despair made him physically ill and even bedridden for a time. Sometime in either late December or early January 1887, with great difficulty, he visited the old parish of Saint-Etienne-des-Gres, Paris where he prayed before a statue of Our Lady of Good Deliverance. Whatever happens, Lord, whatever you have ordained for me, he prayed, I will always hope in your mercy and will always repeat your praise O Lord Jesus, you will always be my hope and my salvation in the land of the living. He consecrated himself to the Blessed Virgin and decided to dedicate his life to God with a vow of chastity. Francis de Sales ultimately conclude that God had good in store for him, because God is Love as John s First Epistle attests. This faithful devotion to God of love not only expelled his doubts but also influenced the rest of his life and his teachings. His way of teaching Catholic spirituality is often referred to as the Way of Divine Love, or the Devout Life, taken from the classic spiritual book he wrote of a similar name: Introduction to the Devout Life. Francis went on to study law, but at last surrendered to a call to the priesthood. After some time at a remote mountain parish, he went to Savoy on a five-year mission to reconcile Protestants to the Catholic Church. In 1602, he was made Bishop of Geneva although he was never able to take possession of his see because of Protestant opposition to his presence in the city. His writings encouraged the pursuit of holiness for anyone in any walk of life. He was a much sought-after director of souls including that of Saint Frances de Chantal, with whom he founded the Order of the Visitation. I leave you the spirit of freedom, he wrote to Jane, not that which excludes obedience, which is the freedom of the world, but the liberty which excludes violence, anxiety, and scruples. Francis died in 1622 and his feast day is celebrated on January 24 th. SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION The St. Anthony Social Concerns volunteers will be serving lunch at the West Side Catholic Center on Tuesday, July 17, 2018. FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 15, 2018 EVERYBODY NEEDS TO FORGIVE SOMEBODY Do you find that the smallest hurts take the longest time to forgive? It takes courage to forgive or to ask for forgiveness. If you are stuck at a crossroads to that path, consider joining the Women s Faith Ministry for a five-week book study: Wednesday, Aug 1 & 8, Thursday, Aug. 16, and Wednesday, Aug, 22 & 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Hospitality Room. At that time, we will read and discuss 12 stories about real people who discovered the life-changing power of forgiveness through grace despite unimaginable circumstances. This program is for all women of the parish and those they wish to invite. WFM book studies include supportive materials, activities that encourage spiritual growth, and inspirational prayer for women who wish to enhance their faith. If you would like to participate, please RSVP by Friday, July 20 by calling the parish office at (440) 842-2666 or by email at wfmstanthony@gmail.com. Although it is not mandatory to attend each week, it benefits you to do so. There is no cost to attend. POTLUCK AND A MOVIE All women are invited to join the Women s Faith Ministry on Sunday, July 29 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Hospitality Room at St. Anthony for a potluck dinner followed by a movie, The Resurrection of Gavin Stone. This light, amusing drama is about a self-absorbed former child star who is forced to do community service at a local church after a run-in with the law. He pretends to be Christian to land the part of Jesus in the church s annual Passion play, only to discover that the most important role of his life is not based out of Hollywood, and a profound transformation takes place. If you can, please bring a main dish, side dish or dessert of your choice for the potluck. Beverages, popcorn and paper products will be provided by WFM. Seating is limited so please RSVP by Friday, July 20 and leave your name, phone number and email address (if you have one) with the parish office at (440) 842-2666 or by sending it in an email to wfmstanthony@gmail.com.
