SUNDAY THOUGHT Mark 10:46-52 In today s Gospel we hear the account of blind Bartimaeus. The character of Bartimaeus can represent anyone who finds themselves in a state of confusion. In his darkness, Bartimaeus doesn t know where to turn or what to do to change his situation. By the grace of God, he is able to hear Jesus and believe, and through his belief in Him, Jesus can now help him. What is critical to today s story is Bartimaeus willingness to call out from his darkness for help. This decision to call out to Jesus is one that we are all asked to make whenever we are in a place in life utterly confused. Our confusion may arise from finding ourselves in a relationship that seems to have lost its way and we don t know where it is going. We may be confused about our marriage; it s in trouble. We are depressed and we don t know which way to turn. Our life may not be going the way we thought it would and we are confused about future decisions that need to be made. The situations are really without number. If we follow the example of Bartimaeus, we must first call out to Jesus in prayer. We must admit that on our own, we cannot change anything. The first step, our cry for mercy and guidance, is the most important step to take to dispel our confusion. The cloak of pride must be thrown off so Jesus can heal us and give us sight. 1

3 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 28, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Dymphna, Virgin and Martyr (7 th Century Ireland) According to Christian tradition, Dymphna was born in Ireland in the 7 th Century. Dymphna s father Damon, a petty king of Oriel, was a pagan, but her mother was a devout Christian. When Dymphna was 14 years old, she consecrated herself to Christ and took a vow of Chastity. Shortly thereafter, her mother died. Damon had loved his wife deeply, and in the aftermath of her death his mental health sharply deteriorated. Eventually the king s counselors pressed him to remarry. Damon agreed, but only on the condition that his bride would be as beautiful as his deceased wife. After searching fruitlessly, Damon began to desire his daughter because of her strong resemblance to her mother. When Dymphna learned of her father s intention she swore to uphold her vows and fled the court along with her confessor, Father Gerebernus, two trusted servants and the king s fool. Together they sailed toward the continent, eventually landing in what is present day Belgium, where they took refuge in the town of Geel. Damon sent his agents to pursue his daughter and her companions. When their hiding place was discovered, Damon traveled to Geel to recover his daughter. Damon ordered his soldiers to kill Gerebernus and when Dymphna refuse to return with him to Ireland, Damon with his own sword cut off her head. Dymphna s biography almost certainly draws from folklore. Nevertheless, the extraordinary signs of Dymphna s intercession cannot be denied. When, in the 13 th century, Dymphna s relics were moved to the cathedral in Geel for the purpose of veneration, numerous cures of mental illness and epilepsy were reported. Soon pilgrims from all over Europe came to Geel for cures. The town s people began to take them into their own homes. Thus began a tradition for the ongoing care of the mentally ill that has endured for over 500 years and is still studied and envied today in the city of Geel. Patients were and still are, taken into the inhabitants of Geel s homes. Never called patients, they are called boarders, and are treated as ordinary and useful members of the town. They are treated as members of the host family. They work, most often in menial labor, and in return, they become part of the community. Some stay a few months, some decades, some for their entire lives. At its peak in the 1930 s, over 4000 boarders were housed with the town s inhabitants. Today, around 500 boarders continue to live at Geel. Mental health professionals visit the town to study the successful community therapy, and pilgrims continue to pray at the cathedral before Dymphna s relics. St. Dymphna s feast day is May 30 th. ALL SOULS DAY REMEMBRANCE BOOK Let us join together as a parish and remember those family members and friends who have touched our lives deeply and have now gone home to God by signing their names in our parish s Book of Life. The book is found in the lobby of the Church. These names and all the Faithful Departed will be remembered in a special way during the coming month of November. All Souls Day Remembrance envelopes are in your envelope packets for your use to remember your deceased family and friends. Additional envelopes for those who contribute on line are available on the parish bookrack. Six additional Masses are scheduled during the year where they will be remembered. Charity obligates us to pray for the souls of the faithful departed just as we would wish to be prayed for. It is still a Catholic practice to have Masses said during the year for those who have died. THE FEAST OF ALL SAINTS Thursday, November 1, 2018, is the Feast of All Saints, a Holy Day of Obligation for all Catholics. Masses for the feast are as follows. The Vigil Mass, Wednesday, 31 October, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. Masses on the day of the feast, Thursday, November 1 st, are at 7:00 a.m.; 9:00 a.m.; 5:30 p.m.; and 7:00 p.m. SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMITTEE In observance of Veterans Day, the St. Anthony of Padua Social Concerns Committee will hold a USO collection drive one weekend only, November 10/11, Please check the bulletin next week for a list of needed items. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER The Introductory Rites The rites that precede the Liturgy of the Word, namely, the Entrance, the Greeting, the Penitential Act, the Kyrie, the Gloria in excelsis (Glory to God in the highest) and Collect, have the character of a beginning, an introduction, and a preparation. Their purpose is to ensure that the faithful, who come together as one, establish communion and dispose themselves properly to listen to the Word of God and to celebrate the Eucharist worthily. In certain celebrations that are combined with Mass according to the norms of the liturgical books, the Introductory Rites are omitted or take place in a particular way. from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 46. MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. (Mk 10:43-44) It can be exhausting to always be caring for your children and spouse. Remember who you are ultimately serving: Christ. He will give you the strength (and the rest) that you need. 5 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 28, 2018 POPE FRANCIS PRAYER INTENTION FOR NOVEMBER In the Service of Peace: That the language of love and dialogue may always prevail over the language of conflict. Reflection by Deacon Ted Penton SJ We live in a world of much violence wars around the world, in our communities, and even in our homes. Seeing and experiencing this violence provokes fear and anger within us, often tempting us to respond with more violence. But this isn t God s answer to violence. We find God s answer on the cross. Jesus didn t allow Peter to defend Him from an arrest by use of the sword. Nor did He call down legions of angels to save Him from the Romans who tortured and executed Him. Instead He submitted to death on the cross. In some mysterious way, the Father used the death and resurrection of His Son for a far greater purposes than any of his followers could have imagined. As Pope Francis eloquently stated, In the silence of the cross, the uproar of weapons ceases and the language of reconciliation, forgiveness, dialogue, and peace is spoken. The words we use matter, and can move us towards greater peace, or towards more conflict. Our words are an expression of who we are, just as Jesus Himself, the Word made flesh, is the incarnate expression of who the Father is. When our words are hostile and aim to put others down, we aren t imitating Jesus, and reconciliation becomes impossible. When instead we use the language of love and peace, this enables us to enter into dialogue with others, even with those who are very different from us. Through that dialogue we begin to better understand one another, enabling us to follow Jesus in building a more peaceful world. CONFIRMATION Today our young people who are preparing for Confirmation will be reflecting on The Holy Spirit. Have you ever noticed that people do not do anything until they are inspired? Once they are inspired, there is nothing they cannot do. The disciples are a perfect example. Before Pentecost, they were full of fear. After Pentecost, they were full of courage. They changed, because they were inspired. They were filled with the Holy Spirit. Our young people will be filled with that same Spirit at Confirmation. God inspires us to do great things with our lives. Jesus promised He would be with us and that He would send His Holy Spirit to guide, inspire, and encourage us. In Confirmation Jesus makes good on His promise. Please pray for our Confirmation students, that the gifts of the Holy Spirit, Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety and Fear of the Lord, will strengthen them on their faith journey. PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT This is a prayer we need to pray every day, every day: Holy Spirit may my heart be open to the Word of God, may my heart be open to good, may my heart be open to the beauty of God, every day. Pope Francis TODAY S REFLECTION How do we know if we are filled with the Holy Spirit? How will we know if we are seeking God s loving plan for our life and responding to it? If we are really allowing the Holy Spirit to flourish within us, the fruits should be bubbling forth in our lives. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor a bad tree bear good fruit. (Matthew 7:18) The fruits of the Holy Spirit are: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity. By embracing and engaging the Gifts of the Holy Spirit we are guided to the path that leads to the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Are you yearning for the fruits of the spirit in your life?
