SUNDAY THOUGHT Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11 Today is the Feast of Pentecost. We observe this day as the Birthday of the Church. The greatest gift the Holy Spirit has given the Church and we her members is the gift of our oneness or our unity. It is a gift the Church has held sacred since her foundation. It is also the gift that Christians cannot take for granted. Unity is a reality that is an ongoing, ever present work. The beauty of the Church has always been and always will be her ability to find room for a worldwide group of people with diverse cultures, yet sharing one common faith. The unity of the Church does not prevent a variety of expressions of this common faith. The Church s magisterium guides her members in regards to those things that cannot vary or change in her role as teacher. The Holy Spirit also guides the Church through honest discussion and dialogue in those areas that are human traditions and therefore capable of being changed to meet the needs of her people. This is how the Church grows and meets the challenges unique to each time and place in her history. Let us pray to the Holy Spirit that the Spirit continues to guide and protect the Church as she fulfills her universal mission to bring the saving message of Jesus Christ to a waiting world. 1

3 PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 20, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Ursula, Martyr (+ 4 th Century) In the German city of Cologne a stone inscription of the 4 th or 5 th century commemorates an early church built by Clematius, a Roman senator, to consecrate the site of the death or burial of a group of virgins slain for their adherence to the Faith. No details concerning the names or number of the virgins are given; only in the 9 th century did an account of their martyrdom with admittedly legendary elements appear. According to the story, the leader of the virgins was Ursula, a Christian princess pledged by her father in marriage to a pagan prince. Ursula wished to remain a virgin, and in order to forestall the marriage, she begged leave of her father to make a pilgrimage to Rome. She sailed in three ships in the company of an unusually large number of virgins, some accounts give the number as 11,000. As they journeyed home, the virgins were captured in the area of Cologne by pagan Huns. When Ursula refused to marry the chief of the band, she and all the women were cruelly slain. In the 12 th century a church dedicated to the Holy Virgins was erected in Cologne. Christopher Columbus named the British Virgin Islands in 1493 in honor of the maiden martyrs. And the story of Ursula s staunch courage inspired Saint Angela Merici when she found the first women s teaching order, the Ursuline s. Saint Ursula s feast day is October 21 st. MYSTAGOGICAL MOMENTS Mystagogy (mist-a-go-gee) is prayerful reflection on the presence of God in the midst of events. Question: Pentecost marks the end of the Easter Season. Over this time, how did you experience the joy and hope of the Resurrection? How is God calling you to a continuing conversion of your heart? HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW Did you know that Pentecost was originally a Jewish feast? Today, we remember how the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles. Originally, it was a Jewish festival in which the first fruits were offered to God. The name comes from the Greek for fiftieth because it is the fiftieth day of Easter. 4 ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH WEEKLY MASS REMINDER Every legitimate celebration of the Eucharist is directed by the Bishop, either in person or through Priests who are his helpers. When the Bishop is present at a Mass where the people are gathered, it is most fitting that he himself celebrate the Eucharist and associate Priests with himself in the sacred action as concelebrants. This is done not for the sake of adding outward solemnity to the rite, but to signify more vividly the mystery of the Church, the sacrament of unity. from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 92a-b. PARMA, OHIO SEMINARIAN OF THE WEEK Let s promote vocations by praying for our newly ordained priests. These men were ordained to the priesthood yesterday by Bishop Nelson Perez as St. John the Evangelist Cathedral for service to the Diocese of Cleveland. Please pray for Fr. Matthew Cortnik, Fr. Michael Feldtz, and Fr. Richard Samide. PARISH GROUP OF THE WEEK The Avilas are a diocesan organization of men and women committed to a ministry of prayer for vocations, especially to the priesthood and to religious life. Under the patronage of St. Teresa of Avila, the Avilas meet every first Saturday for 8:00am Mass and prayer. To join, please call the rectory for the name and number of the person to contact. EVANGELIZATION TIP When talking about a future event, preface your comment with the phrase, God willing. It teaches others about the importance of doing the Father s will rather than our own, and that without God, we can do nothing. CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER We should speak, then, as the Holy Spirit gives us the gift of speech. Our humble and sincere request to the Spirit for ourselves should be that we may bring the day of Pentecost to fulfillment, insofar as he infuses us with his grace, by using our bodily senses in a perfect manner by keeping the commandments. Likewise we shall request that we may be filled with a keen sense of sorrow and with fiery tongues for confessing the faith so our deserved reward may be to stand in the blazing splendor of the saints and to look upon the triune God. 5 PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 20, 2018 This weekend, we will participate in an important Follow-Up Parish Appeal for Catholic Charities. This is not a special collection; rather it is a chance for all Catholics to make a commitment to transform lives and communities by sharing with others the gifts which God as given you. Funds raised through this effort will be used to expand treatment and prevention services to fight the opioid crisis that has a grip on our families, friends and communities. In 2017, nearly 1,200 people in our diocese died of drug overdoses. With your help, Catholic Charites will be able to expand their reach into every county and provide help and hope to those suffering from addiction. DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT! All new, increased and additional gifts returned in the In-Pew envelopes this weekend or donated online at will be matched up to $100,000. Everyone knows someone who has been affected by drug addiction. Prayerfully consider the impact you can have on their recovery and please give as generously as possible.
