SUNDAY THOUGHT Luke 3:1-6 Advent s invitation is to prepare our hearts to receive Jesus Christ. How best can we respond to this invitation? One possible way would be to do a little house cleaning. We won t be able to welcome Jesus if our hearts are filled with thoughts of anger and resentment. If it seems that you are carrying around thoughts like these and it seems impossible to be rid of them, remember Advent is a time of hope. This is a good time to ask Jesus to help us put aside any obstacles in our lives that prevent us from being fully open to Him. We all need hope and Jesus wants to give us a sharing in His own heart to hope in. 1

3 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 9, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINT Saint George, Martyr (+4th century) Confession Schedule 2018 The martyr George has been revered since ancient times in Lydia (present day Lod, in Israel). Already in the 5th century, there was a chapel in Rome in George s honor. Yet, beyond the ancient cult and George s undoubted popularity as a patron, little is known for certain of his life. A famous quote attributed to Pope Gelasius lists George among those saints whose names are justly reverenced among men, but whose actions are known only to God. In the Middle Ages, George became immensely popular due in part to a miraculous vision. The chronicler William of Malmesbury reported that Saints George and Demetrius, the martyr knights, appeared to the Frankish Crusaders in 1098 during the successful siege of Antioch, which was at the that time held by the Seljuq Turks. In the 12th century, English King Richard I placed his army under George s patronage. At that same time, the legend of Saint George s destruction of the dragon terrorizing the countryside began to capture the imagination of the common folk. In the Church s art, Saint George displays the raw heroism of the martyr. He is usually depicted lancing a dragon or leading crusaders into battle. His tokens are a sword, a standard, and a muscular steed. Equestrians find in him a robust patron. Saint George s feast is celebrated on April 23rd. 5 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 9, 2018 PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN The Diocese of Cleveland s Protecting God s Children program is a continuing effort to instruct and inform everyone about the protection of children from sexual abuse. To report any past or present suspected inappropriate behavior toward children by priests, deacons, religious, lay ecclesial ministers or personnel associated with the Church, please contact the Diocesan Response Service Office at or at response_services@dioceseofcleveland.org. You are also asked to immediately inform local authorities about inappropriate behavior. SEMINARIANS OF THE WEEK This week, we pray for Joseph Robinson, Luke Rose, John Rovnak, Timothy Rubeling. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER The Gloria in excelsis (Glory to God in the highest) is a most ancient and venerable hymn by which the Church, gathered in the Holy Spirit, glorifies and entreats God the Father and the Lamb. The text of this hymn may not be replaced by any other. It is intoned by the Priest or, if appropriate, by a cantor or by the choir; but it is sung either by everyone together, or by the people alternately with the choir, or by the choir alone. If not sung, it is to be recited either by everybody together or by two choirs responding one to the other. It is sung or said on Sundays outside Advent and Lent, and also on Solemnities and Feasts, and at particular celebrations of a more solemn character. from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 53. CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER God is constantly revealing himself to us. He whispers to us, he doesn't shout Advent invites us to listen and discover His grace and mercy. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Eschatology: Eschatology is a branch of theology that deals with the doctrines of the last things: Death, Judgment, Heaven, Hell. The first part of Advent is eschatological. PRAYERS FOR LIFE St. Anthony's Knights of Columbus are having an Advent Prayers for Life service on Wednesday December 12, 2018 in church. The program will be at 7:00pm with the Holy Rosary and continue with a Prayer service at 7:30pm. The program should end no later than 8:00pm. Please consider joining the Knights for an evening in Prayer this Advent season. FIFTH SUNDAY ROSARY The Knights of Columbus have made it a goal to pray the rosary prior to the 10am mass that happens to fall on the Fifth Sunday of the month. December 30th is our next Fifth Sunday rosary at 9:15am just prior to the 10am mass. This is open to the entire parish and we encourage you to participate with us. We will be meeting on the side of the church near the Blessed Mother s statue. Please come and pray with us. PLEASE DONATE The Knights of Columbus are conducting a peanut butter drive to help support a local food pantry initiative that is being coordinated with Parma City Council President Sean Brennan and All Faiths Pantry. Please place your donated peanut butter jars in the box in the back of church in the gathering room. We will be collecting peanut butter from now until December 21 st. Thank you for your support and for helping those in our community. MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from the anxieties of daily life. (Lk 21:34) Advent is a time of watchful expectation. What anxieties make you drowsy? Talk about them with your spouse, and pray for peace. Daily Marriage Tip for December 2, 2018 from SAVE THE DATE The St. Anthony of Padua Athletic Association will once again be holding a Night At The Races fundraiser on Saturday, February 16, 2019 in our school gym. 6 BAMBELLINI BLESSING Prepare for Christmas by bringing the Baby Jesus from your nativity scene to the church on Sunday, December 16 at 3:00pm for the Bambellini Blessing. This tradition started in Rome and is becoming more popular. May the Christ Child always bring joy to our hearts. Blessing of the Week - Blessing of a Manger or Nativity Scene (with no priest or deacon) Once gathered, all stand and sign themselves with the Sign of the Cross, while the minister says: Minister: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen. Minister: Praised be Jesus Christ, who dwells among us, now and for ever. All: Amen. Minister: As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ, we pause to bless this Christmas manger scene. The practice of erecting such mangers was begun by St. Francis of Assisi as a means to set forth the message of Christmas. When we look upon these figures, the Christmas gospel comes alive and we are moved to rejoice in the mystery of the incarnation of the Son of God. All sit. Reader: Brothers and sisters, listen to the words of the holy gospel according to Luke: In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town. And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over the flock. All stand. Minister: Let us ask for God s blessing on this Christmas manger and upon ourselves, that we who reflect on the birth of Jesus may share in the salvation he accomplished. Reader: For the Church of God, as we recall the circumstances surrounding the birth of Christ, that we may always proclaim his gift of new life for all people, we pray to the Lord. Reader: For the world in which we live, that it may come to recognize Christ who was greeted by the angels and shepherds, we pray to the Lord. Reader: For our families and our homes, that Christ who was laid in the manger may dwell with us always, we pray to the Lord. Reader: For parents, that their love for their children may be modeled on that of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph, we pray to the Lord. Minister: Let us pray as our Lord Jesus Christ taught us: All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bead, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. With hands joined, the minister says: Minister: God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation you have made manifest your love: when our need for a Savior was great you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love. Lord, bless all who look upon this manger; may it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, and raise up our thoughts to him, who is God-with-us and Savior of all, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. All: Amen The lay minister concludes the rite by signing himself or herself with the sign of the cross and saying: Minister: May Christ our God enlighten our hearts and minds, now and for ever. All: Amen. A suitable song may be sung to end the celebration. adapted from the Book of Blessings 5
