SUNDAY THOUGHT Matthew 21:33-43 Contribution for Weekend September 30/October : Total Offering : $17, Sunday Collection: $13, Faith Direct: $3, Poor Box: $94.00 Throughout the Bible, the image of a vineyard and vines is a familiar one. They are used by the sacred authors to describe God s special relationship with His people. God is kind and loving and always provided opportunities for His people to produce the fruit of a good and virtuous life. At times though, God will need to prune back the vine branches to insure they will continue to produce more and healthy fruit. This pruning is accomplished through a continued call to deeper conversion of life on the part of God s people. Sometimes this pruning causes real pain, but God s desire for us is always to produce more fruit. The visible signs of God s love for us and His desire for our further fruitfulness are found in family and friends who care for us, yet who also can test our love for them. It is found in a homily that may move us to make some deeper response to God s invitation to holiness. It is manifested in our ordinary duties and responsibilities as a parent, spouse, or friend. These and many other ways of pruning should be seen as precious gifts. With the help of God s grace they can help us to produce much fruit. 1

3 TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 8, 2017 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Juan Grande Roman, Religious ( ) Juan Grande Roman was born in Spain on March 6, At age fifteen, Juan was trained for the linen trade, and at seventeen had set up shop in his hometown of Carmona in Andalusia, Spain. Juan worked at the trade for five years before becoming profoundly disillusioned with his life. He left the trade and sought out the solitude of a hermitage, where he spent long hours in prayer. Convinced of his smallness, Juan began to adopt the nickname of Juan Pecador or Juan the Sinner, for he could only think of himself in that way. In time, Juan came to realize his true calling. One day he found two sick vagabonds on the road near his hut. He brought them to his cell and nursed and fed them. He had discovered a call to God s poorest ones. Soon after this he moved to the town of Jerez, where for three years he lavished attention on the prisoners in the local jail. Then he began to frequent the hospital of the city. The administrators resented Juan s careful attention to the patients, but his efforts were noticed by a wealthy couple, and they gave him the money to build his own hospital. In no time, Juan gathered the sick poor under its roof. Eventually, Juan united his hospital with those hospitals founded by Saint John of God. He then formally entered John s Order of Hospitallers. He served many of the victims of the 1600 plague before becoming one himself. Saint Juan Grande Roman died on June 3, 1600 at the age of 54. He was canonized By Saint John Paul II in His feast day is June 3 rd. CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Sacred Chrism: The Sacred Chrism is the holy oil of the Church solemnly blessed by the Bishop at the Chrism Mass. In the Diocese of Cleveland, the Chrism Mass is celebrated on the Tuesday of Holy Week. Sacred Chrism is a mixture of olive oil and balsam, and its use possibly dates back to the days of the Apostles. The balsam is what gives this holy oil its distinctive scent. This holy oil is used in Baptism, Confirmation, the ordination of priests and bishops, and the consecration of altars and church buildings. In sharing more completely in the mission of Jesus Christ and receiving the fullness of the Holy Spirit with which He is filled, the lives of the anointed give off "the aroma of Christ. CONFIRMATION STUDENTS AND PARENTS Today our young people who are preparing for Confirmation will be reflecting on The Prayer Process. We have been discussing things that help us to become the best version of our self. Prayer is one of the things that helps us to become our best version. Why Pray? Because we want to be happy. Prayer can help us discover God s beautiful plan for our life, which is essential to our happiness. Please pray for our Confirmation students, that they discover God s will through regular prayer. WHAT ARE THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT? The gifts of the Holy Spirit are permanent dispositions which make us docile in following divine inspirations. There are seven: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety and fear of the Lord. (Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 389). 2
