2 Our July Meeting July 15, 2018: 1:00 p.m. Saint Anthony of Padua Hall Initial Formation: Noon Our July meeting will be on July 15, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the St. Anthony of Padua Parish Hall. Initial Formation will start at 12:00 p.m. (Noon). Our Liturgy will be Liturgy of the Hours, Daytime Prayer for July 15 th. Ongoing Formation will consist of an Introduction to the Admonitions of Our Holy Father Saint Francis, a discussion of a Franciscan Virtue and a brief look at a Franciscan Saint. We will also be collection paper goods for our Neighbor Our Lady s Inn for Our Neighbor s Basket. In May we finished our study of the OFS Rule is the 40 th anniversary of our New OFS Rule. This month we start new topics for on going formation. First, we will begin a study of the Admonitions of Our Holy Father Saint Francis. In the medieval world, an admonition was more than a warning. It was the practical application in life of a biblical passage. In his time, St Francis of Assisi left 28 admonitions for his brother friars, passages of Scripture and Francis own reflection upon them. These admonitions were found in five 13th-century manuscripts that were collections of writing of Francis and about Francis. The one constant in the five different collections were the Admonitions, referred to in one manuscript as the Canticle of Minority. - Fr. George Corrigan, OFM Each month we will study and discuss on or more of the admonitions. Another thing we will do during on going formation is a study of the Franciscan Virtues. These are taken from the book Franciscan Virtues Through the Year: 52 Steps to Conversion from Saint Francis of Assisi Written by Members of the Confraternity of Penitents, edited by Jennifer Vetter. Examples of these virtues are Eucharistic Reverence, Generosity and Gratitude. Of course, these virtues are not exclusively Franciscan, but Francis did possess and practice these virtues and they can serve as an example to us all. We will cover one virtue a month. And we will continue to look at another Franciscan Saint. We will continue to cover one Franciscan Saint a month until we cover them all, which should be in 2050 and then we can start all over again. Our Neighbor s Basket: After a hiatus of several months, we are once again collecting paper products for Our Lady s Inn. They have been our neighbor for 35 years at 4223 South Compton Avenue. Their phone number is

This is the second weekend in August. The Regional Council is very pleased that the retreat will be by given by Father Ed McKenzie, OFM. Father McKenzie serves as the Spiritual Assistant to the Sacred Heart Province. I am eager to meet Father McKenzie and I look forward to what he has to share with us. We now have registration forms for the retreat on the last page of this newsletter. The Saint Anthony of Padua Fraternity will help sending those members who wish to go to the retreat but cannot afford it. If you want to go to the retreat but can t 3
4 afford it, register for the retreat and pay the $30.00 registration fee and call Steve at and we will pay the remainder at the time of the retreat. And of course, if you want to go to the retreat and can pay for it yourself, then pay for it yourself. This is the same deal we had last year. Top 10 Reasons You Should Make a Retreat 1. God is personally calling YOU. 2. To experience the touch of the Holy Spirit, Jesus personal love for you, and God s grace in abundance. 3. To waste time with your friends who is God. In other words, to pray. 4. To learn your life goals and how to reach them daily. 5. To heal and reconcile your heart and spirit with God. 6. To realize the simple importance of faith in God in your life. 7. To see your place in the world and your faith community guided by Jesus. 8. To help increase your faith, enhance your hope and give of your love. 9. To strengthen your spirit so you can better live your vocation as spouse, parent or friend. 10. To have time for peace and quiet for yourself with God. (Fr. Bill Kempf, St. Justin Martyr Bulletin) Provided by Mary Wainscott, Ph.D., OFS Getting this newsletter by . I know some of you have . It would be less expensive to send the newsletters out by . If you would prefer to get this newsletter by , please call Steve at or better yet, send me an at spgeldmacher@gmail.com. If you don t have , don t worry, we will still send you the newsletter by the U S Postal Service. 4
5 Save the date! Mary Wainscott, OFS, our Spiritual Assistant, is planning a Lenten Morning of Recollection for December 8, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m... I wonder what the topic will be. Fraternity Website The Saint Anthony of Padua now has a website. Our Formation Director, John Owens II, OFS, set it up. Here is the URL: If you have trouble typing this in, John at owens2008@hotmail.com and he cab send the link back to you in an . Mass Together Awhile back we tried setting up occasions when we would go to mass together as a Fraternity. It never really worked out. But I still think it is a good idea. Could you all think about it and come up with some ideas about how we can go to Mass together. It doesn t have to be a weekend mass, but it could be. It doesn t have o be every month, but it could be. You know, it doesn t really have to be Mass. It cold be a Holy Hour. Maybe we could get together for a Holy Hour on a regular basis. 5
