SUNDAY THOUGHT PRAYER FOR EASTER Dear Lord, God of creation, on this Easter morning, your Son Jesus rose from the dead. In doing so, He conquered death, the wage for all sin. Grant that on this Easter Morning we will remember the hope we have in the resurrection, and the hope we have of being with you and our loved ones for all eternity in heaven. Remind us always of this hope we have in the face of every trial and tribulation. Help us always to look to the victory which Christ purchased for us by His blood, and completed at His rising. Amen. 1

3 EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD APRIL 1, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Joan of Arc, Virgin and Martyr ( ) Joan, a French peasant girl, began hearing heavenly voices at the age of thirteen. Over three years Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint Margaret of Antioch, and Saint Catherine of Alexandria came to her. With increasing insistency, they urged her to lead the French prince, then locked in a struggle with Burgundian powers and their British allies, to be crowned. I am a poor girl, she would reply, I do not know how to ride or fight. It is God who commands it, the voices replied. At last, Joan went to Charles VII and convinced him of her mission. The seventeen-year-old girl led the army clad in armor, carrying an ancient sword and a standard that proclaimed Jesus, Maria, In short order, she took Orleans and then Reims. Charles was crowned king. But in the next campaign, the British captured Joan, and the French made no move to rescue her. The British tried Joan as a witch. The official record testifies to the efforts of theologians to confuse the unlettered girl who had beaten them on the battlefield. Joan did stumble at times, confounded by unknown terms like Church militant. She signed a retraction, but returned quickly to her story. At last, she was brought to the stake and burned. She died clutching a tiny cross and calling on Jesus and Mary. Twenty-four years later, the Church re-tried Joan and found her innocent. She was officially canonized in Her feast day is May 30 th the date of her death. TRAVELING STATUE VISIT In response to Our Lady of Fatima s request for the daily rosary, our parish has a Traveling Statue which you can bring to your home for a 3-day visit. Reserve your dates by signing the schedule in the church lobby after Mass on April 14 and 15, Or call Tom and Barb at (440) any day between 5-10 p.m. to set-up a date. SEMINARIANS OF THE WEEK This week, we pray for Sean Neville, James Parisi, and Michael Petkosek. DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Sunday, April 8, 2018, is Divine Mercy Sunday. Jesus has asked us through Saint Maria Faustina to observe the Second Sunday after Easter as a day to call upon His Divine Mercy. Divine Mercy Devotions will be conducted that afternoon from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. with the Chaplet of Divine Mercy being recited at 3:00 p.m. Read what Our Lord said to Saint Faustina: Encourage souls to say the Chaplet of Divine Mercy which I have given you. Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death. Whey they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the Judge but as the Merciful Savior. Priest will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable grace to those souls who trust in My mercy. Through the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will. SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION (ADULTS) The Sacrament of Confirmation helps us to live the Christian life through the gifts of the Holy Spirit. If you are interested in volunteering or want to find out more about the program, please call Randy Harris at WEEKLY MASS REMINDER From time to time on Sundays, especially in Easter Time, instead of the customary Penitential Act, the blessing and sprinkling of water may take place as a reminder of Baptism. from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 51. PARMA, OHIO SPECIAL PROGRAM OF THE DIVINE MERCY All parishioners are invited to attend a special program on Wednesday, April 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the main church in preparation for Divine Mercy Sunday. The evening will begin with a viewing of an extraordinary documentary film, The Face of Mercy, narrated by Jim Caviezel who portrayed Jesus in The Passion of the Christ. This stirring film weaves together theology and history with remarkable testimonials, some of which include a woman who found freedom in forgiveness after seeing her family wiped out by genocide; a former NFL linebacker who walked away from football to share Christ s mercy with the homeless; and a young widow who chose mercy towards her husband s killer. These testimonies help viewers reflect on the things that prevent them from forgiving and showing mercy as Christ did. From the smallest hurts to major tragedies, we can realize that Divine Mercy is alive in our modern world it is present and can transform the world. A moving, sung version of the Divine Mercy Chaplet will follow the movie and refreshments and fellowship will wrap up the evening. You are encouraged to invite family, friends and neighbors. Bring a rosary, although some will be available. This program is sponsored by The Women s Faith Ministry of St. Anthony of Padua. 6 ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER INTENTION FOR APRIL For Those Who Have Responsibility in Economic Matters: That economists may have the courage to reject any economy of exclusion and know how to explore new ways forward. Reflection by Fr. Joe Laramie, SJ On TV and on the internet, we see daily headlines about the economy. The Dow Jones reached another new high, or the economy sputtered again today. I often feel confused and overwhelmed by these stories. What is the economy? Who is in charge? Am I powerless to change it? It can seem that the economy is a sort of giant dragon that needs to be fed by taxes, regulations, innovations, new markets, and more. When it is fed, it s happy and grows fatter. If it isn t, then it breathes fire, wipes out a few thousand jobs, and demands more food for tomorrow. Is this how the economy really works? Is this how it has to work? This month, Pope Francis asks us to pray. For those who have responsibility in economic matters. That economists may have the courage to reject any economy of exclusion and know how to explore new ways forward. Economists have an important role to play in the world today. Often they are college professors and researchers. They serve as advisors to businesses and government leaders. They identify and shape trends and new approaches. They impact everyone 7.5 billion of us each day. They often feel pressure to make short term gains to satisfy CEO s and stockholders. But these gains can be like cutting down an apple tree for quick lumber at the cost of losing years of juicy fruits. Part of the problem is our way of looking at the economy. Are record stocks and GDP s our constant goals? Can we ever tame the beast? Perhaps we need a new way to look at the situation. Maybe the economy is not a dragon but more like a garden where everyone is called to work and everyone is invited to eat. Different laborers have different roles: weeding, plowing, harvesting, packing, and overseeing. Regarding the economy, Pope Francis writes, Authentic human development has a moral character. It presumes full respect for the human person, but it must also be concerned for the world around us Accordingly, our human ability to transform reality must proceed in line with God s original gift of all that is [Laudato Si, #5]. The economy ought to serve humanity. Instead of humanity serving the economy. Economists must be bold and creative to help us envision new ways of growing the global garden. In prayer and action, we can support them in this holy, living enterprise. PARMA, OHIO CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Ecclesiastical Heraldry: Ecclesiastical Heraldry refers to the use of heraldry within the Christian Church and clergy. Typically, dioceses and bishops have coats of arms that identify them. The shield is ensigned with external elements that identify the bearer as a Bishop. A gold processional cross appears behind the shield. The galero or pilgrim s hat is used heraldically in various colors and with specific numbers of tassels to indicate the rank of a bearer of a coat of arms. A bishop uses a green galero with three rows of green tassels.
