Contribution for Weekend Sept.23/ : SUNDAY THOUGHT Matthew 21:28-32 Total Offering : $13, Sunday Collection: $10, Faith Direct: $3, Poor Box: $84.00 In our Gospel passage this weekend, Jesus tells a story to help us see the importance of change. The son in Jesus story who first said no, had the courage to change his mind and fulfill his father s will. The boy wasn t too full of himself to remain stuck in just one manner of acting. Someone who is proud doesn t have that same ability. A proud person doesn t see any need for change on their part. They want to cling to the control they have over situations and hold on to their sense of safety and the image they have of themselves. They are simply stuck in their own way of looking at life. The remedy for pride is humility. The second reading for today s Mass tells us, Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourself. Humility requires us to empty ourselves of ourselves. We empty ourselves so that we can receive. But before we can receive there must be space made in our lives. The humble person knows the hidden secret of a happy life. To be full of oneself is simply a dead end street. Only when we are empty will we have the ability to be filled with the presence and the power of God. 1

3 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 1, 2017 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Josemaria Escriva, Founder ( ) Josemaria Escriva was born into an active Catholic home in Barbastro, Spain, in As a boy he came upon some frozen footprints left by a passing barefoot Carmelite friar. I began to have an inkling of what love is, he later said. As he grew, this love took hold of him. Hours spent in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament flowered into a priestly vocation. On October 2, 1928, while meditating on some written notes he had made concerning his prayer, Josemaria saw a new form of life in which everything becomes prayer, everything can and ought to lead us to God, feeding our constant contact with him, from morning till night. Every kind of work can become prayer, and every kind of work that becomes prayer, turns into an apostolate. Students at the university where he was a chaplain were his first adherents. Eventually his Opus Dei movement would embrace the globe comprising lay and religious branches. Having survived the violence of the Spanish Civil War and weathered the suspicions of many, Josemaria spent his later years in Rome, leading, writing, and teaching. He told his followers, Offer your prayer, your atonement, and your actions for this end, that all of us Christians may share one will, one heart, one spirit. This is so that we may all go to Jesus, closely united to the pope, through Mary. Saint Josemaria died at Rome on June 26, 1975 at the age of 73. His feast day is June 26 th. Next weekend, October 7 & 8, 2017, the parish will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick following the homily of the Mass. Those who should consider receiving this great sacrament of Jesus peace and healing are those bearing a serious illness, facing a serious surgery in the near future or those afflicted with the sufferings of advanced age. Consider bring a relative or friend to Mass this weekend who could benefit from the reception of the sacrament. SEMINARIAN OF THE WEEK Let s promote vocations by praying for our diocesan seminarians. Please pray for Christian Raddell. EMERGENCY COLLECTION FOR ALL 2017 CALAMITIES This weekend, St. Anthony of Padua is participating in an emergency collection for the many victims of recent natural disasters. The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland and diocese across the country have been asked by the leadership of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to continue their generosity to help all those affected by these 2017 calamities. These funds will be used in all affected areas to support humanitarian aid, assistance with long-term efforts to restore communities after widespread destruction and for pastoral and reconstruction needs of the Church in the US, the Caribbean and Mexico. The Church itself in these regions is now in need of tremendous assistance itself. Many of the Church s structures have been damaged and their resources depleted which makes it challenging to provide assistance and pastoral outreach to those in need. All checks should be made payable to St. Anthony of Padua with the memo line marked 2017 Calamities. If you are not prepared to donate today, you may bring your donation to the rectory office this week, or place donations - cash or checks - in an envelope marked for the 2017 Calamities Relief efforts and drop in the collection next weekend. Thank you. 50+ SOCIAL CLUB St. Anthony's 50+ Social Club will have our meeting on Thursday October 5th in the Hospitality Room. All 50+ers are welcome and are encouraged to bring a friend! The meeting starts at noon with the Rosary, followed by a lite brunch of pastry, coffee, or tea. It's not to soon to be planning our Christmas party, so please come and give us your input. We will play BINGO for $1.00 a card with all money collected given out as prize money, join other players for a game of Pinnacle cards or simply stay and enjoy the camaraderie with fellow club members. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER INTENTION FOR OCTOBER Workers and the Unemployed: That all workers may receive respect and protection of their rights, and that the unemployed may receive the opportunity to contribute to the common good. Work brings a basic dignity to our human participation in God s creation. Although we can cooperate in God s work through our labor, and we can exercise creativity in the arts, speech and thought, we cannot truly create out of nothing. Only God creates in this fashion, ex nihilo, and it was in this way that He created the world. Pope Francis has since the beginning of his Pontificate put great emphasis on our Christian duty to respect workers and the kinds of work they do. In a 2013 audience from Labor Day, he exhorted the People of God, calling for an end to slave labor and human trafficking, encouraging us to look for creative ways to help our brothers and sisters find fulfilling work. The Holy Father connected this to one of the pillars of Catholic social teaching, the intrinsic dignity of ever human person. I wish to extend an invitation to everyone to greater solidarity and to encourage those in public office to spare no effort to give new impetus to employment. This means caring for the dignity of the person. As we pray with the Holy Father for workers this month, it is good for us to consider how we are building up those for whom we work, those with whom we work, and those who work for us. We must be especially attentive to our shopping habits and the way in which we use the internet. The products of sweatshops and human trafficking are widespread, and it take careful diligence and a deep life of prayer to avoid the temptation to exploit workers indirectly or indirectly. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER Before one receives Holy Communion, if they are aware of grave (mortal) sin, they need to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confession is the ordinary means in which one receives forgiveness for grave sins. Prepare your heart well for Jesus by going to Confession. DID YOU KNOW Did you know that the Church traditionally honors St. Anthony of Padua on Tuesday? On the Tuesday after St. Anthony's death on 13 June 1231, as his body was brought to the church, many miracles took place. In honor of him, a novena to St. Anthony is prayed either for thirteen consecutive Tuesdays or perpetually. At our parish, we pray the novena to St. Anthony after the morning Masses every Tuesday. All are welcome. PARISH GROUP OF THE WEEK The Church Decorators are a group of men and women who share their artistic talents by decorating the church for the different liturgical seasons. There is usually one evening meeting before Christmas and one before Easter. To join, please call the rectory for the name and number of the person to contact.
