Contributions for Weekend April 14/15, 2018: SUNDAY THOUGHT John 10:11-18 Total Offering: $13, Sunday Collection: $9, Faith Direct: $3, Poor Box: $86.00 Jesus tells us in today s Gospel that He knows us as He is known by the Father. This kind of knowing relationship is one in which there are not barriers. It is an entirely open and accepting relationship. It is so intense and so intimate that it makes us one with Jesus Christ Himself. Jesus doesn t just know us as people who may have or may not have done good or evil. He knows us with all our hopes and fears, our insecurities and desires and our giftedness and our short-comings. He knows the struggles we face at the present time. He knows our loneliness and our times of intimacy. He also knows our limitations and our sinfulness. Yet He still lays down His life for us. This is how each of us really wants to be known and cared for by someone whose love is without limits. In our human relationships there will always be limitations. The other person can only know us so much, but with Christ there can be no limitations in His knowledge and love for us. In our relationship with Jesus Christ the possibilities are endless. We are the only ones who can put limitations on the love Jesus Christ has for us. 1

3 FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 22, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Joseph Cupertino, Priest ( ) Joseph was born in a destitute state; his father was bankrupt and his mother was forced to give birth in a barn. His father died soon after, and his mother found herself with a boy who seemed unable to fit in. He was forgetful and prone to accidents. The villagers called him Boccaperto, the Gaper, because he was often seen sitting with his mouth open. In retrospect, it seems that these episodes may have been early experiences of mystical prayer. Joseph had an unsuccessful apprenticeship with a shoemaker and a failed novitiate with the Capuchins. At last an uncle who was a Franciscan got him a job in the stables of his friary. In this humble setting Joseph matured, and his prayer life deepened to such an extent that he was invited to study for the priesthood. The young man could barely read his missal, but when the examiner came to test him in theology, he was asked to give a teaching on the only Scripture passage he knew by heart. He passed. Two years later, Joseph levitated for the first time in prayer. Many reliable witnesses saw Joseph fly, but his extraordinary prayer experiences led to misunderstanding. He was repeatedly sequestered for long periods, once by the inquisition and again by his own order. Joseph accepted it humbly to the end. Not surprisingly, Saint Joseph Cupertino is invoked by pilots and test-takers. His feast day is September 18 th. 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Reservations are now being accepted for couples married 50 years (married in 1968) to come and celebrate at The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, on Sunday, July 29, 2018, at 2:30 p.m. Couples who are celebrating other significant years, 55 or over, or those who missed previous celebrations are also welcome to attend. Registration is now available online at or come into the Rectory office Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and our staff will gladly help you register. Deadline for reservations is Monday, June 18, 2018 but please get your reservations in early as seating is limited at the Cathedral. DONUT SALE FUNDRAISER The Knights of Columbus will be holding a Krispy Kreme donut sale in the back of the church after all masses next Saturday and Sunday, April 28th and 29th. Donuts will be sold at $8.00 per dozen or purchase a half-dozen for $5.00. The proceeds from the donut sale will go toward the annual Knights of Columbus Measure Up campaign which helps fund programs for those with developmental disabilities. Your support will be greatly appreciated. MOTHER S DAY CARDS Mother s Day Mass Cards will be sold after most Masses this weekend and the following weekends of April 28/29 and May 5/6. Mother s Day is May 13. This is a great way to honor your Mom, living or deceased, by remembering her with a special Mass. Cards for the living are $2.00 and cards for the deceased are $1.00. They may also be purchased at the rectory during regular business hours. Seminarians of the Week This week, we pray for Alexander Spenik, David Stavarz, and Christopher Stein. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER At Mass or the Lord s Supper the People of God are called together, with a Priest presiding and acting in the person of Christ, to celebrate the memorial of the Lord or Eucharistic Sacrifice. In an outstanding way there applies to such a local gathering of the holy Church the promise of Christ: Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in their midst (Mt 18:20). For in the celebration of Mass, in which the Sacrifice of the Cross is perpetuated, Christ is really present in the very assembly gathered in His name, in the person of the minister, in His word, and indeed substantially and uninterruptedly under the Eucharistic species. from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 27. 2

ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH ENCOUNTER MARY OUR MOTHER The Women's Faith Ministry invites all women to attend a program honoring our Blessed Mother on Wednesday, May 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Hospitality Room at St. Anthony. This program is intended to bring you closer to your heavenly Mother through an inspirational prayer service, the unveiling and crowning of Our Lady of Fatima, a special take-home remembrance, fellowship with other women, and refreshments. He can look at things realistically, he is in touch with his surroundings, he can make truly wise decisions. In him, dear friends, we learn how to respond to God s call, readily and willingly, but we also see the core of the Christian vocation, which is Christ! PARMA, OHIO EVERYONE CAN DO SOMETHING As our region grapples with the heroin epidemic, there are a few things that each of us can do. Next weekend is Drug Take-Back Day. Take a few minutes to bring all your unused and unwanted prescription drugs to your local police or sheriff s department. It will keep your home and our environment safe. 5 FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 22, 2018 CONFIRMATION CATECHIST NEEDED Confirmation at St. Anthony Parish is conferred in the fall of the student s freshman year of high school. This November St. Anthony of Padua Parish will have 48 of our young people celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation. This summer they will begin their Confirmation Preparation by completing service work for the church and the community. Starting in September, they will meet for seven Sundays leading up to Confirmation in November. We are in need of Confirmation catechists. If you are interested in volunteering or want to find out more about the program, please call Randy Harris at PSR RE-REGISTRATION PSR registration for the school year is now underway. We are asking you to fill out the registration form and return it as soon as possible. This will aide us in planning class size and ordering books. DID YOU KNOW Did you know that in the current Code of Canon Law, you can receive Holy Communion twice in a day? Canon 917 states: A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the Eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of can. 921, 2.
