Correcting another person isn t tops on most of our lists. Or if we find that we do like it, there s every possibility that we re not doing it with the right motives. Unfortunately some people by nature like to lord it over others; most people do not. But the first thing that we should notice in today s Gospel passage is that correcting others can also be an obligation, both when we have the authority to do so, and more broadly when Christian charity requires that it be done. As our Act of Contrition tells us, we sin not only by what we do, but we also sin by what we fail to do for others and offering needed correction is the best thing we can do for them. Today though, we hear all kinds of excuses to get out of this Christian obligation. We hear people say that we should live and let live, or, there but the grace of God, go I. These things may sound nice, but there is a danger that they can also encourage a spirit of lack of concern for others. How many times have we heard the story where someone was being harmed and a whole crowd of people turned away not wanting to become involved? Granted these are usually extreme cases, but it is still basically a failure to correct the wrong being done by another person. As the saying goes: all that s needed for evil to triumph, is for good people to do nothing.

3 TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Mary Frances of the Five Wounds, Virgin ( ) Saint Mary Frances of the Five Wounds was born Anna Maria Gallo, the daughter of Francesco Gallo and Barbara Basinsin, in the Spanish Quarter of Naples, a red-light district of the city still known today for its high crime. According to tradition, another saint, the Jesuit, St. Francis de Geronimo, predicted her future sanctity while she was still an infant. Her family was of the middle class, but her father, a weaver of gold lace, was a very violent man who regularly abused his family physically, often severely. When Anna Maria was sixteen, her father attempted to force her into a marriage with a young man of means who was seeking her hand. She refused and asked to join the Franciscan Third Order, through which she could live out a religious life in the family home. She was received into the Order on 8 September 1731 and began wearing the religious habit which was an uncommon practice by that year. She also adopted the use of the religious name of Mary Frances of the Five Wounds out of devotion to the Blessed Virgin, St. Francis of Assisi and the Passion of Christ. It was also at this time that the future saint, St. John Joseph of the Cross became her spiritual director and under his guidance she made great advances in prayer. In 1753, she and another woman took up their own residence in the city of Naples and her work among the poor became well known. It is also at this time that she reportedly received the wounds of the stigmata. She would carefully conceal her wounds while doing her work with gloves so as not to attract attention. Numerous cures were also reported to have taken place under her care; cures she always attributed to the intervention of Saint Raphael the Archangel. Saint Mary Frances of the Five Wounds, worn out by her care of the sick and poor and intense prayer life, died on October 7, 1791 in the city of Naples. She was canonized by Pope Pius IX on June 29, PRO-LIFE MINISTRY St. Anthony Pro-Life Ministry is in the gathering area of the church this weekend offering Krispy-Kreme Doughnut for sale. All proceeds from the sale will go to organizations that help mothers to save babies from abortion. Cost of the doughnuts are $3.50 for 6 or $7.00 per dozen. Please support this important cause. EMERGENCY COLLECTION FOR HURRICANE HARVEY This weekend St. Anthony of Padua is participating in a special collection to assist the victims of Hurricane Harvey. The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland and diocese across the country have been asked by the leadership of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to have this emergency collection. The money will be used both to support the humanitarian and recovery efforts of Catholic Charities USA and to provide pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted diocese through the USCCB. All checks should be made payable to St. Anthony of Padua with the memo line marked Emergency Collection for Hurricane Harvey. In Confession, our soul receives healing from God when we ask for forgiveness and receive His mercy. With the anointing, we ask God to bring healing to the body and to strengthen our weary soul. God is always looking out for us, and He is always there when we need Him. RELIGIOUS ORDER OF THE WEEK Order: Order of Friars Minor Conventual (OFM Conv.) Province of Our Lady of Consolation Founder: St. Francis of Assisi. Origin: After Francis established the order, a group of friars chose to minister in and around the larger towns. They lived together in communities, rather than living in hermitages. Work: The friars serve in many capacities. Some are parish priests. Others are chaplains in hospitals, nursing homes, military bases, and prisons. Some friars are theologians and scientists teaching in seminaries and universities. Point of Interest: The friars use the suffix Conventual, which derives from the Latin convenire, to come together. Website: CONFIRMATION STUDENTS AND PARENTS Confirmation Preparation classes begin September 24, Students will meet at the 10:00 a.m. Mass each week, followed by classroom sessions. You do not have to commit to working every week, just a few hours of your time even once a month will help. Details about the volunteer opportunity may be obtained by calling the rectory (440) and speaking with Fr. Dale, or leave your name and number for a representative from bingo to call you back,. You can also stop by Bingo any Thursday in the lower level of the school and speak with Gerry.
