Contributions for Weekend May 19/20, 2018: SUNDAY THOUGHT Matthew 28:16-20 Total Offering: $12, Sunday Collection:$9, Faith Direct: $3, Poor Box: $ Social Club Poor Box: $28.00 This weekend we reflect upon a doctrine of our faith that is impossible to comprehend and yet is the doctrine that most helps us understand what life is all about. It is the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. We ae told that the Trinity is the Church s way of describing the inner life of God. Within the one Supreme God, we have three distinct Persons, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each of these persons is giving and receiving their life from the other and life received is eternal love. In this we see that the Trinity is a community of Love. This we firmly believe, although we will never fully understand the immensity of this mystery of Love. We also believe that we are created in God s image. Put these two beliefs together and what do we come up with? It means that each of us is created in the image of God who is constantly loving and receiving love. Our very nature then is to be a community to be in loving relationships with others and ultimately with the Other God, the Most Holy Trinity. 1

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY MAY 27, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Rose of Lima, Virgin (1586-1617) Rose s parents came to Lima, Peru, from Puerto Rico.

In her teens, she actively resisted her parents plan for marriage.

She warded off suitors by rubbing her face with pepper, causing her skin to blister and crack. A compliment someone gave her on the fineness of hands led her to coat them with lime.

3 THE MOST HOLY TRINITY MAY 27, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Rose of Lima, Virgin ( ) Rose s parents came to Lima, Peru, from Puerto Rico. They named her Isabel, but she became known by her nickname, Rose. With extraordinary freedom, Rose chose Christ from a very young age. At five, she wanted to make a vow of virginity. In her teens, she actively resisted her parents plan for marriage. When they placed a wreath of roses on her head, she made it a penitential instrument, studding the hidden interior of the crown with spikes that dug into her scalp. She warded off suitors by rubbing her face with pepper, causing her skin to blister and crack. A compliment someone gave her on the fineness of hands led her to coat them with lime. The penances worked also to soften her heart. When her parents fell on hard times, Rose sold flowers to make money. She opened an infirmary in her parents home that was Lima s first refuge for the sick poor. She tended them with herbal remedies she had prepared herself. At twenty, Rose became a Dominican tertiary. By this time, she was living in a hermitage in the back of the family garden. She enjoyed great favors in prayer, but always retained her customary penances. When Rose died at the age of thirty-one, the young and the old, the rich and poor, joined the funeral procession. She is the first saint of the Americas, the patroness of Peru, and is invoked against vanity. Saint Rose of Lima s feast day is August 23 rd. MEMORIAL DAY Monday, May 28, 2018 is Memorial Day, a legal Holiday. Mass for the holiday will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. The parish office will be closed and will re-open for parish business on Tuesday, May 29th. Begin your holiday, traditionally the start of the summer season, with the celebration of the Eucharist. FATHER S DAY MASS CARDS Father s Day Mass Cards will be sold after most Masses this weekend, May26/27 and the following two weekends June 2/3 and 9/10. Cards may also be purchased at the rectory Monday thru Friday during regular business hours. This is a beautiful way to honor your Dad, living or deceased, by remembering him with a special Mass. SEMINARIANS OF THE WEEK Let s promote vocations by praying for our diocesan seminarians. Please pray for: Ryan Arto, Michael Bedell, and Charles Bulger. 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Reservations are now being accepted for couples married 50 years (married in 1968) to come and celebrate at The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, on Sunday, July 29, 2018, at 2:30 p.m. Couples who are celebrating other significant years, 55 or over, or those who missed previous celebrations are also welcome to attend. Registration is now available on-line at or come into the Rectory office Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and our staff will gladly help you register. Deadline for reservations is Monday, June 18, 2018 but please get your reservations in early as seating is limited at the Cathedral. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER Now the center and high point of the entire celebration begins, namely, the Eucharistic Prayer itself, that is, the prayer of thanksgiving and sanctification. The Priest calls upon the people to lift up their hearts towards the Lord in prayer and thanksgiving; he associates the people with himself in the Prayer that he addresses in the name of the entire community to God the Father through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, the meaning of this Prayer is that the whole congregation of the faithful joins with Christ in confessing the great deeds of God and in the offering of Sacrifice. The Eucharistic Prayer requires that everybody listens to it with reverence and in silence. from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 78. 2

Social networks are a powerful reality of the modern evangelical landscape and can serve as powerful engines to drive efforts to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ as well as the prayer intentions of the Holy Father. Since the very establishment of the Church of Jesus Christ on earth, technology has been used to share the Gospels. Word of mouth was the initial mechanism, but soon pen and ink were employed to record the holy words and actions of Jesus. That was the technology of the Day. Bishop Robert Barron points out often how St. Paul used technology of the day in ships, letters, and the Roman Roads to evangelize. The Guttenberg Bible was a massive leap in the use of technology to provide the word of God across Europe. St. Maximillian Kolbe and Venerable Fulton Sheen have used modern technology to share the message of Salvation from Sin in Jesus Christ. More recently Mother Angelica s EWTN network has been a powerful tool worldwide in the same vein. In the modern world, we find immense opportunities to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ using platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and standard webpages to network across boundaries previously much more challenging to overcome. We can send a message to India today which would have taken weeks or months to arrive in previous ages. The Church has been making great use of technology across history and today is not different. How do I use social networking to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Am I respectful in thought, word, and action in my posting on social media? How might I personally use social media to promote the Pope s Worldwide Prayer Network the Apostleship of Prayer? Reflection by Fr.
