Dale W. Staysniak Parochial Vicar: Fr. Peter T. Kovacina SUNDAY THOUGHT Luke 1:26-38 It s not usual to hear someone say that you can t trust anybody these days! Unfortunately our cynicism is all too often rewarded by the inherent weakness we find in human nature. As a result, everyone is under suspicion for their lack of credibility. Truthfully though it is utterly impossible to get through the day without the need to put our trust in someone, sometimes even with our lives. The same thing must be said of God. We trust that our lives will be worked out based upon the love God has for us and the love we have for Him. All three Sunday readings today have for their theme our trust in God. King David wishes to build God a temple, but he is told instead to sit back for the Lord will make a house. St. Paul releases us from the anxiety we may have about serving God when he tells us that God will be able to give you the strength to live according to the good news that we have been taught. Finally, in the midst of Mary s marvelous yet worrisome situation, we hear the angel assure her that, nothing is impossible with God. There are times in our lives when we are not asked to do anything for God, but rather to accept what God can do for us. God knows what is good for us and will always be there as a rock of safety. Let Mary be our model and her words our own prayer. I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me and you say. 1

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 24, 2017 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Joseph Sebastian Pelczar Bishop (1842-1924) Joseph Sebastian Pelczar was born into a deeply religious Polish family in 1842. While still in grade school, he wrote in his diary, Earthly ideas are fading away. I see the ideal of life in sacrifice, and the ideal of sacrifice in the priesthood. He went to the seminary and was ordained for the Diocese of Przemysl. After working briefly in a parish, Joseph was sent to Rome where he completed doctorates in theology and canon law. His first of many books on spirituality and canon law was written while on summer vacation titled: On the Spiritual Life. After his studies and another short stay in a parish, Joseph taught at the Przemysl seminary for eight years and then at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow for twenty-two. Reading, writing, and teaching were pursued alongside myriad initiates for the poor. He gave free lectures, established hundreds of parish centered libraries and created a school for those who were servants. In 1894, Joseph founded the Congregation of the Sister Servants of the Sacred Heart to extend Christ s love to the poor and the sick. Joseph Pelczar became Bishop of Przemysl in 1900. Still he advocated for the unlettered, the hungry, the sick, and the unemployed. He wrote movingly of his deep love for the Sacred Heart, nurtured through Eucharistic prayer. Saint John Paul II summarized Joseph s life: He was zealous in all things, but in such a way that in his service Christ himself was the Master. Saint Joseph Sebastian Pelczar died at the age of 82 on March 28, 1924. His feast day is observed on January 19 th. ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH PARMA, OHIO BLOOD DRIVE St. Anthony Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a blood drive on December 31 from 9:00am- 1:30pm. The LifeShare blood mobile will be parked in front of the school during the event. No pre-registration is required, Walk-In donors are accepted and encouraged. During this Christmas season your blood donation is more important than ever as supplies are low at nearby hospitals. Each donor will receive a pair of colorful socks. Remember, it s about life! MYSTAGOGICAL MOMENTS Mystagogy (mist-a-go-gee) is prayerful reflection on the presence of God in the midst of events. Begin your conversation with God with this question: Question: The Nativity scene reminds us of the holy event of Jesus birth. When you see the Baby Jesus, what do you experience? Hope? Joy? Peace? How does this experience relate to Christmas? BLESSING OF HOMES The Christmas season is a wonderful time to have your home blessed. If interested, call the rectory and leave your name, address, and phone number. A priest or deacon will contact you and schedule a time. The Christmas Season ends January 8 with the Baptism of the Lord. EVANGELIZATION TIP Since Christmas is about the birth of Jesus, wish ever one you meet a Merry Christmas SEMINARIANS OF THE WEEK Let s promote vocations by praying for our diocesan seminarians. As a reminder, preschool classes will resume on January 7, and PSR classes resume on January 8. May God s Peace and Love continue to bless you during this joyful season and throughout the New Year. MARRIAGE AND FAMILY The Incarnation of the Son of God opens a new beginning in the universal history of man and woman. And this new beginning happens within a family, in Nazareth. Jesus was born in a family. He could have come in a spectacular way, or as a warrior, an emperor... No, no: he is born in a family, in a family. This is important: to perceive in the nativity, this beautiful scene. from the General Audience of Pope Francis on 17 December 2014. Because of Jesus, never forget that the family life is holy. The St. Anthony of Padua Parish Office will be closed Monday, December 25 and Tuesday, December 26, 2017 in observance of Christmas. In addition, our office will also be closed Monday, January 1 and Tuesday, January 2, 2018. Our office staff wishes you a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year! CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER Rejoice and be glad that so great and good a Lord, on coming into the Virgin's womb, willed to appear despised, needy, and poor in this world, so that men who were in dire poverty and suffering great need of heavenly food might be made rich in him.
