2 Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 30, 2018 From the Desk of Deacon Tom Happy New Year! Feels like only yesterday I was writing that opening for the first week of Advent and here we are at the end of 2018, well into the Christmas Season. Lots of Feasts and Solemnities coming up. Today is the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. On Tuesday, January 1, it's a Holy Day of Obligation and the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. Then, Sunday January 6 is the Epiphany of the Lord, followed by the Baptism of the Lord on January 13. The Baptism of the Lord officially ends the Season of Christmas. Fr Mike and I will be wearing white vestments throughout this Season, then back to Green for a few short weeks, then back to Violet for Lent! Most people might think the Christmas Season ends on January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany, which celebrates the visit of the Magi (think Astronomers, not Kings!) This is because that day marks the 12th day of Christmas, like we hear in that famous song. However, this year the Christmas Season officially ends on January 13 with the Baptism of the Lord. It's a long Christmas Season this year! Sometimes the Baptism of the Lord is transferred to the Monday following the Epiphany, like it was in 2017 and So enjoy the longest Christmas season the Church calendar offers us. We won't have another Christmas season this long until Don't ask me how I know that... Being the Feast of the Holy Family this weekend, our reading are all about family. Having two adult children that live with me, I really like these readings. If I can gather everyone in my family for a shared meal, maybe I'd read them the first reading to remind them to take care of me in my old age (starting now!) Lots of choices for our readers this weekend on the second reading. It's unusual to have so many options for the second reading. But the Gospel is the story of Jesus in the Temple. Parents should be able to relate to this. When my daughter was young, my wife was at the football field in Derry with her and my son for football practice. When she looked up my daughter was gone. She was frantic as you'd expect! She called the police and all the parents were looking for my daughter. I arrived from work, not suspecting anything, just after she had been located. My daughter had "...seen a bunny and chased it into the woods..." as she explained to my wife. The look of ebbing panic and waves of relief on my wife's face told me I was spared great anguish! This was also before cell phones were popular, so she couldn't call me and set me in a panic. In our Gospel, Mary says to Jesus "Why have you done this to us?" Notice that as throughout scripture Joseph is silent! He never utters a word in all of scripture. Imagine the relief of both Mary and Joseph as they were reunited with their Son after he had been missing for three days! May you all reflect on your families and how important they are to you this weekend. I know this weekend reminds me of the importance of mine. Use this weekend to find the opportunity to let them know how important they are! Deacon Tom

3 Calling all children from 3 years of age through 1st grade! The Good Shepherd Program is an approach to the religious formation of children, based on the conviction that God and the child are in a blossoming and ever-developing relationship. We will learn and meditate on scriptural and liturgical themes at an age appropriate level, allowing them to deepen their relationship with God through Jesus Christ! This dynamic program continues Jan 13 and runs until April 28th. It is for grades 2 through 5 and meets on Sundays immediately following the 9:30 AM Mass until 11:30 AM. To promote various learning styles there will be elements of art and music centered around Scripture. If your child is in a Sacramental year (Gr. 2 - Reconciliation, Gr. 3 Confirmation & Eucharist) they are required to participate to receive their Sacraments. Edge is a Catholic middle school youth ministry program. It provides a safe, fun place for youth to find real Catholic community, to get answers to their questions about faith and to experience Jesus in a profound and personal way! Edge will meet on Sundays immediately following the 9:30 AM Mass. This is a GREAT opportunity for our teens to grow in discipleship and lead vibrant and radical Christian lives! There will be awesome social nights issue nights and liturgically centered nights - all chances to have an awesome and challenging time! LifeTeen will meet bimonthly on Sunday nights from 6-8 PM. One Sunday a month we will offer the entire parish the opportunity to participate in G.I.F.T. or Growing In Faith Together! We hope to build community and journey together toward deeper relationships with Christ. G.I.F.T. will be held after the 9:30 AM Mass. There will be breakfast for all participants followed by small group sharing and activities.

On Sunday December 1:30PM please come down to the Hall to help assemble baby bottles for our parish-wide St. Gianna's Place Campaign that will take place through the month of January.
