This wicked deed is only discovered once the seeds begin to sprout and the weeds appear with the wheat. Jesus uses this parable to teach us about a quality of God s mercy that may not be often thought about. It is God s forbearance. Forbearance means that God is patient and longsuffering. He gives everyone up until the last breath time to repentant. God s forbearance can explain why the world is the way it is instead of the way we would sometimes wish it to be. The farmer in the story refuses to allow his slaves to disturb the wheat and weeds together while they are growing less the wheat be compromised in anyway. The story is a reminder that Jesus followers cannot anticipate God s final judgment before it is time. In its present state the world is composed of both bad and good. The judgment of God alone will determine the final outcome of both when it is proper to do so. Until then there must be patience and preaching of repentance on our part. As long as we are alive, God is not finished working in all of us. We can change. Others too can change. Where we find life there is always the reason to hope in salvation found only in Christ.

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 23, 2017 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Andre Bessette, Religious Brother (1845-1937) Andre Bessette was born near Montreal, Quebec, Canada, n 1845, one of ten children. His father, an itinerant carpenter, died when a tree he was cutting fell on him. Two years later, Andre s mother died too. Twelve-year-old Andre went to relatives to be raised. He labored as a cobbler, blacksmith, and factory worker. He developed a severe stomach condition often causing him great pain, but a fervent prayer life supported him throughout his many trials. Deserving to become a consecrated religious, a priest friend sent him to the Congregation of the Holy Cross in Montreal. The frail Andre was made a religious brother, door-keeper, infirmarian, lamp-tender at the boys college run by the congregation. When he was not needed, he went into the woods on a nearby hill to pray to Saint Joseph, the carpenter. The sick who arrived at his door were blessed with a Saint Joseph medal or some oil from the lamp that burned before the saint s image in the chapel. When many experienced sudden healings, Andre gave thanks to Saint Joseph. Andre nourished hopes of building an oratory at his prayer spot on the hill. After he and his brothers planted Saint Joseph medals on the site, the owner sold them the plot of land. A rustic structure was built, and pilgrims began to come. In 1908, Andre moved in, and construction of a massive church began. When work stalled, Andre begged for money. Upon Andre s death at age ninety-one, a million people came to the nearly completed oratory to pay their respect. Saint Andre Bessette s feast day is January 6 th. SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION A sincere THANK YOU to all those who baked for the West Side Catholic Center luncheon on Tuesday, July 18, 2017. The 195 hot lunches that we served consisted of hot dogs, baked beans, potato chips, watermelon and also included a generous portion of your fresh baked pastries. All were most appreciative. Remember to mark your calendar for our next serving date, Tuesday, September 19, 2017. Thank you again for your continued support and generosity to the West Side Catholic Center. Hey Catholic! Did You Know Did you know that IHS are the first three letters of Jesus' name in Greek? IHS is regularly used on holy cards, vestments, and other religious items. It is also used in the coat of arms for Pope Francis. YOU RE WORTH IT! Have you ever felt like everyone around you had it all together? Loving marriage, great kids, no health issues, no troubles. When they don't talk about their difficulties you assume they have none. So you keep quiet about your own struggles, afraid you won t be accepted if anyone knew what was really going on with you. If this sounds familiar, you re not alone. The Women s Faith Ministry invites all women to attend a book study, You re Worth It! The book reveals ways to help change how you feel about yourself by discovering how Jesus feels about you. If you would like the support and encouragement of other women in your journey of faith, then consider joining us each Wednesday beginning August 2 through September 20 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Hospitality Room at St. Anthony. Although it is not mandatory to attend all sessions, it benefits you to do so. If interested, your RSVP is needed by calling the parish rectory at (440) 842-2666 or by email at wfmstanthony@gmail.com no later than July 24 for ordering books and materials. There is no cost to attend. 2018 MASS INTENTION BOOK The 2018 Mass Intention Book will open to the general parish community for all remaining mass times on Wednesday August 2, 2017 at 8:30 AM in the rectory office. If you will be celebrating a significant wedding anniversary during 2018 (25th, 50th, etc.) please contact the office prior to August 2, 2017 to schedule your date. The suggested offering for a Mass in the Diocese of Cleveland is $10.00. Parishioners may request up to 2 week-end Masses and up to 4 weekday Masses at this time. CATECHISTS, AIDES AND VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR 2017-2018 PSR Please prayerfully consider being a part of the important ministry of passing on the Catholic Faith to our young people. We are in need of catechists, aides and other volunteers for the 2017-2018 school year. We need catechists for grades 3, 4, 5 and 8. If you are interested in learning more about the opportunities available at our Parish School of Religion, please call Randy Harris at 440-842-2666. ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH RELIGIOUS ORDER OF THE WEEK Order: The Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM) Summary: Founded in 1937, the Medical Missionaries of Mary bring health services to people of different cultures where human needs are great. Founder: Mother Mary Martin Charism: With Mary as their model, missionaries show special concern for mother and child and for the fostering of family life. Website: http://www.mmmworldwide.org Special thanks to Sister Joanne for coming to our parish last week. There is still time to support Sister and her community in their work with the poor. WEEKLY WORK OF MERCY Say a prayer for the Medical Missionaries of Mary sisters. Sister Joanne asked us for our prayers; it is only right to do our part. SEMINARIAN OF THE WEEK Every week, our parish will promote vocations by encouraging the community to pray for our diocesan seminarians. Please pray for Luke McNeill. FOOD DRIVE St. Anthony s Knights of Columbus is teaming up with the St. Anthony s Food Bank to feed the hungry from our parish. Because of vacations and family activities, the summer months are the leanest for donations to this worthy cause. Our food bank currently serves 13 families from our parish and right here in Parma. The items that are needed most are laundry detergent, toilet paper, bar soap or antibacterial soup, canned fruit, cereal, jelly spaghetti sauce and peanut butter. All donations are welcome and your support of this project is greatly appreciated. The donation weekend is that of August 5 th & 6 th before all masses. Just bring your donation to the gathering space before mass and a Knight will be there to accept and thank you for your donation. Cash and gift card donations will also be accepted as the Food Bank will convert those to the most needed items as well. If you would like to donate, but will not be attending mass at St. Anthony s that weekend, just give Jim Gresko a call @ 440-724-9024 and we will pick up your donation at your home. 3 PARMA, OHIO PSR RE-REGISTRATION 2017-2018 PSR registration for the 2017-2018 school year is now underway. Invite them to learn about the journey by coming to an informal meeting on Saturday August 12, 2017 at 1:00 PM in the Hospitality Room. Contact Fr. Peter at the rectory or by email frpeter@stanthonypaduaparma.org with any questions. LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Please check out the new CDs on the Lighthouse display in the gathering space. There are five new selections. Love Sacrifice Trust: He showed Us the Way; The Treasure of Our Soul: The Apostles Creed; The Case for Jesus: The Biblical and Historical Evidence for Christ; The Chaplet of Divine Mercy in Song; and Mary: The Indispensable Mother of God. Our featured selection this week is, Love Sacrifice Trust: He showed us the Way. Fr. Mike Schmitz shares important insights on the meaning of Christ s cross. He shows how God s rescue mission for us includes the need for each person to embrace his own cross in order to reestablish trust in the Father and understanding that love requires sacrifice. SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 23, 2017 EVANGELIZATION TIP Start learning about our new Bishop Nelson Perez. This way, if someone asks you a question about the Church, you can give a good answer. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER Even though Pope Francis named Bishop Nelson Perez as the next Bishop of Cleveland, we will continue to pray for Bishop Daniel Thomas at Mass until September 5. On that day, Bishop Perez will be officially installed as the 11th Bishop of Cleveland. 4 MYSTAGOGICAL MOMENTS Mystagogy (mist-a-go-gee) is prayerful reflection on the presence of God in the midst of events. Start your conversation with God with this question: What was it like to receive the blessing of the Lord through the Priest at the end of the Mass? MARRIAGE AND FAMILY To Parents: Tell your children that you love them. To Children: Tell your parents that you love them. Sounds simple, but how regularly is it done?
