SUNDAY THOUGHT John 15:9-17 Edward DeCress Contributions for Weekend April 28/29, 2018: Total Offering: $13,072.65 Sunday Collection: $9,705.00 Faith Direct: $3,367.65 Poor Box: $122.00 There are some people who think that becoming a disciple of Jesus is just too complex to understand. They are also the people who have never heard today s Sunday Gospel passage. In today s Gospel Jesus gives us one commandment and one commandment only to live our lives by if we wish to be considered one of His followers. He tells us to love one another as He loves each one of us. Now to be quite honest with you, while Jesus has simplified disciple requirements, He is also asking a big commitment of us. When He tells us this, He means to love everyone, not just those whom we are naturally attracted to love. There are some people whom we know who are just so attractive and kind that it would be almost impossible not to love. That is as it should be. By God s design we are attracted to goodness wherever and whenever we find it. But Jesus command goes beyond natural attraction. We are also called to love those whom we would rather have nothing to do with. We are called to love those whom we have nothing in common with and are not attracted to in the least. We are called to love those whom we do not find good or beautiful. In short we are called to love all as we are all loved by God. Christian loving is an invitation to go beyond the natural inclination to love and participate in the supernatural love of God Himself. 1

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 6, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Maria Goretti, Virgin and Martyr (1890-1902) Maria Goretti was born in 1890 in Corinaldo, Italy, the third of seven children in a poor peasant family. Desperate for a better life, the Goretti s emigrated to the Italian town of La Ferriere. Only a year after the move, Maria s father, exhausted from the hard farm work, succumbed to illness. Afterward, Maria habitually wore her rosary wrapped about her wrist. She prayed often during the day. She took great delight in her First Holy Communion on May 29, 1902. Young as she was, she cherished her purity, and refused the advances of nineteen-year-old Alessandro, the son of the tenant farmer with whom the Goretti s shared a house. On July 5, 1902, Maria was minding her sleeping sister in the heat of the afternoon while her family worked in the fields. Suddenly, Alessandro appeared at the house. He grabbed Maria and dragged her into the kitchen, where he attempted to rape her. Struggling wildly, she begged Alessandro to avoid committing this sin. In the face of Maria s resistance, Alessandro stabbed her repeatedly, and then fled. Maria was rushed to the hospital, where she survived for twenty long hours, tortured by thirst. She resolutely declared to the priest who heard her confession, May God forgive Alessandro, because I have already forgiven him. Some thirty years later, a repentant Alessandro told the story of Maria s heroic courage at her beatification procedure. Saint Maria Goretti s feast day is July 6 th. DINE OUT AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE The Knights of Columbus will be holding a Five Guys fundraiser on Thursday, May 17th from 5pm - 8pm at the Five Guys restaurant located at the Shoppes of Parma on Ridgewood Drive. Five Guys will donate up to 25% of each purchase toward the 2018 Knights of Columbus Measure Up campaign. These funds support programs for the developmentally disabled, such as our local support of Camp Cheerful. In order for us to receive the donation from Five Guys, you will need to provide them with the Five Guys flier, or mention to them that you are there to support the Knights of Columbus of St. Anthony of Padua parish. Fliers will be distributed after all masses on May 12 and 13th, and will be available in the back of the church. Thank you for support! CARNATION SALE The Pro-Life Ministry will be selling carnations for Mother s Day next weekend, May 12th and 13th after all Masses. Cost of each flower remains at $1.50. Buy one for your mother, or purchase one to place in the vase in front of the inside or outside statue of Our Heavenly Mother. Thank you. MOTHER S DAY CARDS Mother s Day Mass Cards will be sold after most Masses this weekend, May 5/6. Mother s Day is May 13. This is a great way to honor your Mom, living or deceased, by remembering her with a special Mass. Cards for the Living are $2.00 and cards for the deceased are $1.00. Cards may also be purchased at the rectory during regular business hours. LADIES GUILD Kindly join us in celebrating the lovely tradition of our May Crowning Ceremonial Mass on Tuesday, May 8 at 6:00 P.M. A charming evening has been lovingly planned for you afterwards at a Tea Party to be held in the Hospitality Room with a delightful menu. So come then we ll have a sip of tea, a prayer or two and special moments shared with you. Have a favorite tea cup?...bring it with you! HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW Did you know that the month of May is typically dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary? The crowning of the statue of the Blessed Virgin is a wonderful tradition to honor Our Lady. Bring a flower to Our Lady as an act of love for her. CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER If you put all the love of all the mothers into one heart it still would not equal the love of the Heart of Mary for her children. St. Louis de Montfort 2

CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Pyx and Burse: The pyx is a small vessel of silver or gold in which the Holy Eucharist is carried to the sick. The pyx should be placed in a burse, a small case worn around the neck. The burse gives proper respect to the Blessed Sacrament and reminds us that we have given a special treasure. 4 Church Etiquette with Monsignor Manners Monsignor Manners says: A Catholic gives the Mass their whole attention. Unless it is absolutely necessary, a Catholic avoids leaving the body of the Church during the Mass. 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Reservations are now being accepted for couples married 50 years (married in 1968) to come and celebrate at The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, on Sunday, July 29, 2018, at 2:30 p.m. Couples who are celebrating other significant years, 55 or over, or those who missed previous celebrations are also welcome to attend.
