January 6: Epiphany/Theophany The Feast of the Epiphany was established as a solemn feast in the Eastern Church in the middle of the fourth century as proclaimed in the Apostolic Constitutions: Let the Epiphany, in which the Lord manifested to us His own divinity be to you the most honored festival and let it be celebrated on the sixth day of January. The Greek word epiphany means manifestation and applied by the Christians to the life of Our Lord Jesus Christ, it specifically meant the manifestation of His divinity. St. John Chrysostom elucidates: Why do we call this day Epiphany? Because Jesus Christ manifested Himself to all people, not when He was born, but rather, when He was baptized. Until that time He was unknown to the people, as testified by St. John the Baptist, saying,: There stands among you One, Whom you don t know! (Jn. 1:26) The Greek word Theophany, which means the manifestation of the Godhead, more clearly reflects the manifestation of the Blessed Trinity at Christ s baptism as poetically described in the troparion of the Feast: At Your baptism in the Jordan, worship of the Trinity was revealed. The Solemn Blessing of Water, in commemoration of Christ s Baptism in the Jordan is the main feature of the Feast of Epiphany. Wednesday is a Holyday of Obligation. Liturgies will be offered at 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Water will be blessed at each service. Mirovanije $$ from next weekend will be forwarded to the St. Joseph Outreach in lieu of not benefiting from a First Fry Day Fish Fry this month.

4 The Building Commission recently met with Architect Glen Ramage to review preliminary plans for the parking lot renovation project. The scope of the work will include: Replacement of deteriorated concrete walks New asphalt for all existing surfaces Alternate bids will be requested for: installation of a mesh fabric between the asphalt courses to further stabilize the final product A new trench drain at the south drive entrance New drain tile at selected locations to help alleviate drainage problems New curbs/signage at all handicap/reserved parking spots Spare electrical conduits between the church and north parking lot Ramage is in the process of completing the plans/specifications so that the project can be bid this month. 5 Ringing in a New Year God s Way If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 New Year s Day is a public holiday in the United States and many other countries. January 1 became generally recognized as the beginning of the year in the 1500 s with the adoption of the Gregorian calendar. In the United States, the holiday is traditionally considered to be a time to take stock of one s life and to make resolutions for the coming year. The best way for believers to celebrate each New Year s Day is to resolve to live more like the new creation that the apostle Paul says we are. Once we accept the sacrifice that Christ made on our behalf, we enter into the New Covenant and God begins a new work of creation in us. He gives us a new heart, a new self, and a new song. We re called to have new attitudes and a new lifestyle. As we grow, God brings new opportunities of service and teaches us new truths. We also get a new future. As we read Revelation, we can take comfort in thinking about the time when God will right all wrongs, heal all hurts, and give us a new name and a new home. With the arrival of each new year, we get closer to the Ancient of Days, who promises, Look, I am making everything new! (Revelation 21:5) It makes sense that after the holidays, people tend to turn to self-improvement. Most of us have had some time off from work or our routines to enjoy family and friends. It is very common to feel exhausted after the holidays and you may need to take extra care of yourself. Here are some ideas to help you accomplish this: Validate the way that you are feeling. During all of the celebrating, there is no room for sadness or annoyance. Take deep breaths during the day to relax your body and mind. Set priorities to accomplish tasks on a daily basis. Give others help from a full you take time for yourself. Listen to your body if you are hungry, eat healthy; if tired, sleep. Laugh! Watch a funny movie, listen to your favorite music, dance, sing or tell a funny joke. Pay attention to your thoughts, feelings, expectations and interactions. Plan new or different activities for fun or start a new January family tradition! These simple ideas will help you start the new year off right.
