Lighting the Advent Wreath During the season of Advent we are asking members of the Parish to be part of the services by volunteering to light the advent wreath at the beginning of Mass. The advent wreath is part of our long standing Catholic tradition. The circle of the wreath symbolizes the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul. The pine signifies continuous life. The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. Each candle represents one thousand years, four thousand years between Adam and Eve and Jesus Christ. The lighting of these candles signifies hope. Please call the Parish Center to schedule your families participation. The glory of Christianity is to conquer by forgiveness. -William Blake

Beginning in Advent, our Sunday 10:30 Mass will be recorded and available to you via our Facebook page. All you need to do in order to get it is to "Like " our St. John the Evangelist Page on Facebook and you will be automatically signed up to receive it. Also, we are looking for a couple of additional people who would be willing to use our equipment to record and upload the Masses for us to assist our generous technician, Kevin Richardson. We sincerely thank Kevin for his willingness to serve in this capacity. Mardi Gras Planning Meeting The committee to plan this years Mardi Gras Celebration will meet on Tuesday, November 29 at 6:30 in the Parish Center. If you are interested in getting involved please join us, all are welcome. Oplatki Christmas Wafers During Advent, Oplatki wafers will be available in the vestibule of the Church and at the Parish office for use at your Christmas dinners. A packet of 3 is a $3.00 donation. They will be available until we run out. First Reconciliation The Second graders and others will be celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time next Saturday, December 3, 10:00 AM. Along with their parents and siblings they will have the opportunity to experience the mercy and forgiveness of God in this special sacrament. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. Congratulations to our parishioner, Robert Rider, who received his Eagle Scout honors on November 26. We as a parish are proud of him and grateful too for his involvement at Saint John s in the past and present. Robert is now a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. Family Ornament Making Party Mark Your Calendars for this year's Family Ornament making party! Sunday, December 11 from 1-4 our Parish Center will again be open for all of our parish children and their families to enjoy an open house of ornament making and holiday snacks. There will be coca and cookies, and things to make for the littlest hands and some bigger ones too. And, we may even get another visit from St. Nicholas who will tell us the story of the real person whom the Church honors as the spirit of kindness and generosity during this season. No reservations are required and everyone is invited, so please come! If you would like to help with the fun, please call Erin Green at Jefferson Club Poinsettia & Wreath Sale Parishioners who ordered poinsettias and wreaths can pick up their vouchers in the parish office after November 28th. All Jefferson Club members will receive their vouchers at the Christmas party on Dec. 5th. Anyone not attending the Christmas party will have their vouchers delivered to them. They will not be at the office. All vouchers can be redeemed at Cellurale's on Dec. 9, 10, and 11. Thank you for your support. The profit will be used as part of our donation to purchase altar linens.

4 REFLECTION 1st SUNDAY OF ADVENT "Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come." Jesus doesn't tell us when he will come again; but he does tell us all we need to know. First, he leaves no doubt in our minds that he will in fact return--this isn't a question we have to debate. And secondly, he tells us what we need to do to be ready: stay awake! As long as we don't doze off while we're waiting, everything will be all right. So our task is a relatively simple one. We are called to be on the lookout. We are supposed to be ready for the Lord when he appears. This is a straightforward instruction to be sure. But it does contain an inherent challenge: it's often much easier to hit the snooze button than to get up and at 'em. It's our task, however, to make sure we don't give in to the temptation to fall back asleep. This is what the season of Advent helps us to do. It's like the Church's alarm clock, ringing with persistence in our ears: Wake up! Throw off the covers of apathy and distraction! Jesus is coming! Get up and get your house in order before he arrives! What exactly this means will be different for all of us --the particular behaviors we need to change, the specific virtues we need to develop--all of this is unique to each individual. But our common goal is the same--to clean house in our hearts and make ourselves ready to welcome the Lord. Yes, his return at the end of time will be a momentous event, but even if we never experience it during our lifetime, Jesus still wants to come to us here and now, to dwell in our hearts through the presence of his Spirit. This Advent, let's be ready to welcome the Lord every minute of every day. 5 Please take advantage of the opportunities to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the Advent Season. It is a good time for a deeper look into ourselves to acknowledge our choices in living our lives. We yield many times to the darker side of our lives and let our fears and insecurities dictate our behavior and attitudes. Let go of those this year and let the grace of God replace the fear.
