5 \/ INCENT MOTORS CO. VINCENT R. DeFELICE, Presiden 21 WINTER STREET WESTERVILLE, OHIO PLYMOUTH CHRYSLER IMPERIAL Donaor of Auomobile for Gues Sar During Say in Weserville Wh en involved in any work of ar, one mus ask himself over and over again wheher or no i is really worh doing. As he direcor I have arrived a a concep and inerpreaion ha I feel would mos sui he idea of why I am here a all in his new and exciing Oerbein Reperory Theare concep. I seems ha in ligh of all our curren culural, racial, poliical, economic and religious upheavals and re-evaluaions ha he search for Self in peopl e of all ages, especially he young is a ferven and inense desire and need. By changing he seing of he play from 18h cenury England o mid-19h cenury New Orleans, I believe ha he play's values are grealy heighened by our being able o idenify more closely o a period in our naion's hisory wihou losing any of he verbal grace, syle and inenions of Sheridan. As a direcorial acion I' ve aemped o poin ou boh he goodness and depraviy of man, o expose he "phonies" and o show how propaganda, gossip and lies can no only desroy individuals bu whole culures and even enire naions. This o me is wha he play is abou. Wh a is being done in his deparmen's reperory concep is he singl e mos imporan acion ha MUST be done if he heare in our naion is o no only survive bu flourish and produce dis inguished crafsmen and ariss. 7 McVAY FURNITURE CO. Specialiss in American Tradiional New Locaion N. High Opening early March ';])irecfor ~ Corner WHY REPERTORY THEATRE? Since he emergence of he heare from he medieval church ino he srees and he widespread developmen of he heare as a profession during he Renaissance, he mos ofen uilized form of hearical producion has been ha of he reperory heare. A Reperory Theare ruly defined is a group of acors, direcors and designers producing a series of plays in alernaing sequence. This hearical syle affords he greaes poenial variey for he audience while providing a consan source of arisic challenge o he hearical aris. Reperory Theare virually disappeared in America from abou 1890 o 1950, largely because of he long run concep and he esablishmen of a "sar" ouring sysem. In Europe he reperory concep is sill he hear of hearical producion, and many owns over 50,000 people have heir own subsidized, municipal, professional reperory heare, symphony, balle company. To mos Europeans, culural companies are as imporan and inegral o a rich ciy life as parks, police forces and sewage sysems. In recen years he American reperory heare sysem has been making a slow (and someimes painful) comeback. There are currenly abou 40 professional, regional heare companies, many of hem funcioning wih reperory conceps, some wihin educaional insiuions. For he pas decade, he Oerbein Theare has annually employlld name gues sars o work wih sudens. While he lis of names is impressive (including Hans Conried, Ed Begley, Kim Huner, Pa Hingle, George Grizzard, Brock Peers) he conribuion o he educaional objecives of a liberal ars heare are probably more imporan and perhaps more impressive. The gues aris concep has drawn aenion o he Theare (in he pas decade audiences have grown from 5,000 o over 20,000 for he winer season); helped educae and rain sllldens while providing heare of increasing qualiy annually; helped arac qualiy high school graduaes o a program which provides foundaion raining wihin he framework of a liberal ars educaion; provided levels and sandards of produci0n for which sudens, having once aained, will coninue o srive; helped simulae he developmen of a Summer Theare program and helped build a Theare wih widely recognized sandards of producion and qualiy. Why Reperory Theare hen?? The Theare saff believes ha associaion wih ariss-inresidence is probably he bes mehod of raining currenly available o college performers. The pracical raining provided by he inensive rehearsal performance siuaion is a n ecessary adjunc o heoreical raining in he classroom. The reperory sysem demands concenraion, discipline and devoion, while he poenial for learning inheren in working wih wo professional acors and a professional direcor is unlimied. Quie frankly, he sudens may have learned more pracical heare in he pas six weeks han in he res of he year's aciviies. Finally, he Oerbein Theare saff and sudens would like o publicly express heir appreciaion o Joseph della Sore, John Milligan and Paul Jo for sharing heir alen and ime wih us. In addiion o being fine, solid professionals we have discovered ha hey are also fine human beings who care abou oher people. We know hey have helped shape he fuure of many of our sudens and of h1s heare - hank you! Charles W. Dodrill
