This issue contains a tribute to him. He will be missed at Department Conventions, as well as DUVCW events around the state and nation. Our condolences go out to Ruth, Anna, and their entire family. How quickly time flies. Less than five months to Department Convention! I hope all the Tents are having a good year. I so enjoyed visiting Julia Dent Grant Tent No. 16 on December 3. I was privileged to watch as the Tent initiated three duvs. The members treated me to great food at their annual Christmas event held at White Haven Historic site at Grant s Farm. I made my official visit to my own Mary Whitney Phelps Tent No. 22 on January 21. The Tent was most generous in supporting my President s Project. During a working lunch, we had a Convention planning meeting. I will be visiting Josephine Garlock Marrow Tent No. 23 on February 28, Charlotte Harrison Boone Tent No. 20 on February 28, and Ann Hawkins Gentry Tent No. 21 on March 22. I m looking forward to these visits and hope the weather continues to be mild and snow and ice free. And speaking of Department Convention, we are planning a great event in Springfield. Your official invitation follows this letter and you will find information about hotel registration on page 4. The official convention registration form and raffle tickets will be in G.O.#3. Tent News Julia Dent Grant Tent No.16 On October 8, 2011 PNP Ruth Funck and Missouri Department Junior Vice President Dianne Scheffing, attended the dedication of the James B.

Louis Square Park located in the Carondelet neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. This site was chosen as the first Ironclad that was built by James B. Eads was done in Carondelet.

There were also several reenactors playing the parts of Frederick Douglass, James B. Eads, Ulysses S. Grant, and Robert E. Lee.

Sherman Camp #65, commanded by Charles Funck, gave a gun salute. The first Ironclad ship commissioned to serve in the Civil War was called the USS Carondelet.

5 Tent News Julia Dent Grant Tent No.16 On October 8, 2011 PNP Ruth Funck and Missouri Department Junior Vice President Dianne Scheffing, attended the dedication of the James B. Eads Memorial Ironclad Cannon. This event was sponsored by the William T. Sherman Camp #65 SUVCW. The ceremony took place at the South St. Louis Square Park located in the Carondelet neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. This site was chosen as the first Ironclad that was built by James B. Eads was done in Carondelet. The greetings were given by Ret. Chief Petty Officer Noel Stasiak USN. The keynote speaker was Ret. Rear Admiral Lee Metcalf USNR. There were also several reenactors playing the parts of Frederick Douglass, James B. Eads, Ulysses S. Grant, and Robert E. Lee. There were several residents from the Carondelet neighborhood in attendance. At the end of the dedication, members from the William T. Sherman Camp #65, commanded by Charles Funck, gave a gun salute. 6 Department President s Official Visit to Tent No. 16 Tent News Department President Fran Black visited Tent No. 16 s December meeting, held at White Haven on the grounds of Grant s Farm. Fran had brought along the Department s Civil War traveling trunk and the duvs had fun trying on the various garments. Fran presented her President s project, which was well received by the members of Tent No. 16. Three duvs were initiated: Emily Buehrig and Katherine Trebing, granddaughters of Tent President Donna Dasho, and Rachel Lee, daughter of member Sandra Lee, and granddaughter of Phyllis Freeman. Patriotic Instructor and duv Claire Trebing gave a beautiful salute to our military serving away from home at Christmas. December is Tent No 16 s annual Christmas luncheon, so good food and fellowship was enjoyed by all. Another great photo of the duvs of Tent No. 16. 7 Mary Whitney Phelps Tent No. 22 Dedicates Civil War Orphans Home Historical Marker September 30, 2011, was quite a day! The dedication of Tent No. 22 s Civil War Orphans Home historical marker was amazing. The event was held on the grounds of Sunshine Elementary School in Springfield which is located in the south-central part of the city in a busy area. The marker commemorates the work of the tent s namesake, Mary Whitney Phelps, with orphans of the Civil War. (An image of the front and back sides of the marker appeared in the Department of Missouri General Orders #1, September 2011, issue.) The marker sits prominently on the northeast corner of Sunshine Street and Jefferson Avenue. The event began at 12:30 p.m. with a reception for invited guests, hosted by Sister Jody Clifton and her efficient hospitality committee. The program began promptly at 1:00 p.m. Bringing a welcome from the school was the principal, Mrs. Rene Saner. The invocation was given by Dr. John Marshall, senior pastor at Second Baptist Church, a Civil War enthusiast who came dressed as a circuit-riding preacher! The color guard was composed of three members of the Phelps Camp No. 66, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (Jeff Patrick, Gary Riley, and Dr. Greg Wait). Following introduction of a large number of distinguished guests, greetings were brought from the following: Fran Black, President, Missouri Department, DUVCW; Dr. Ben Hackenwerth, Associate Superintendent Elementary, Springfield Public Schools; Hon. Bob Stevens, Mayor Pro Tem of Springfield; Hon. Sara Lampe, Representative from the 138 th District; and Mr. Jim Viebrock, Greene County Presiding Commissioner. Next, two fifth graders read excerpts from two Civil War essays written by their class. An award-ofparticipation plaque for the fifth grade class was presented to Mrs. Saner. The entire student body then sang When Johnny Comes Marching Home which was just delightful! 7 Tent News The audience was next treated by a visit from Mary Whitney Phelps, portrayed by Sister Rosemary Bane. Next were remarks by marker committee chairperson, Sister Sally Bueno, who then read the marker s inscription. The two students who had read the essays then assisted tent president, Sally McAlear, in unveiling the marker, followed by an impressive musket volley by the color guard. The program ended with the retiring of the colors by the color guard and benediction by Dr. Marshall. The guests lingered on the grounds visiting and admiring the marker for quite a while after the program. The members of Tent No. 22 will long remember this perfect day! It was a chilly, sunny day but they were a jovial working crew! The luminaries were placed in preparation for the Eighth Annual Memorial Luminary Driving Tour, which ran from 5:15-9:30 p.m. that evening.

9 Tent News Tent No. 22 Members Volunteer at Wilson s Creek National Battlefield in December A group of 10 Tent No. 22 members (along with five husbands, one grandson, and one cousin) placed luminaries at Wilson s Creek National Battlefield, near Republic, Missouri, on the morning of December 10, It was a chilly, sunny day but they were a jovial working crew! The luminaries were placed in preparation for the Eighth Annual Memorial Luminary Driving Tour, which ran from 5:15-9:30 p.m. that evening. The weather was brisk, and there was a full moon for the approximately 1,660 visitors who took the driving tour. Luminaries were placed along both sides of the park s fivemile tour road. The Tent No. 22 crew handled the area of the Ray House on the property. There were a total of 2,539 luminaries placed throughout the park each one representing a soldier who was a casualty on that commemorative day August 10, 1861 (The Battle of Wilson s Creek). President s Project 2011-2012 In cooperation with the Missouri State Archives: Digitization and Indexing of Volume 1 of the Missouri Veterans Home (St.

10 President s Project In cooperation with the Missouri State Archives: Digitization and Indexing of Volume 1 of the Missouri Veterans Home (St. James) Inmate Register The Missouri Veterans Home (St. James) was originally a home for Union soldiers and was known as the Federal Soldiers Home of Missouri until It was established in 1896 by the Women s Relief Corps and the Grand Army of the Republic. Not only are Daughters of Union Veterans closely connected to the Women s Relief Corps and the Grand Army of the Republic, the intent of the project ties into our organization s goals to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Civil War and to support projects that deal with genealogy and history. This first volume contains the original admission registers for 396 inmates (residents) at the Missouri Veterans Home at St. James from June 25, 1897-August 11, The information contained about each soldier in the registry will provide some amazing information for genealogists, researchers and Civil War historians. Information given in the register usually includes the following: name, admission date and number, friends or near kin, service record, date and place of birth, present age, amount of pension, nature of disability, occupation, marital status, literacy, church and lodge memberships, and other remarks. The register entry also may include biographical data, addresses of relatives, date of death and place of burial. The Archives estimates a cost of $1000 for this project. Our donation will pay for the scanning and data entry needed in order to make the documents from Volume 1 accessible online. Once scanned and put on the Missouri Archives website, the individual register entries will be available for viewing and a high resolution copy may be printed. Our organization will be credited on the Missouri State Archives web page with providing funding for the project. The documents will not only be of benefit to the public at the local, state, and national level, but world-wide. With the sesquicentennial well underway, this project is most timely. Many who have not cared about their ancestors involvement in the Civil War are being motivated to start researching their Civil War ancestor s service. I hope you will become as excited about this project as I am and will be ready to support it financially. A special button was designed to benefit this project by Tent No. 22 member Sally Bueno. And of course, we have a slogan: Donate Five Keep History Alive Digitize I ll be bringing these buttons with me as I visit the Tents. Button designed by Sally Bueno.
