1 The Trigg Patriot JULY 2015 CHAPTER SERVICE AWARD HONOREE JOHN HUMPHRIES John was recognized for his service back in February, but his leadership in chapter life this month has been nothing short of amazing! He played a key role in the Humphries cemetery grave markings, presented four Veterans Appreciation Medals, and made a significant contribution to the chapter in honor of Jesse Wall, Thomas Humphries, and Absalom Humphries. Thank you for your service, John! PAGE 1

3 HUMPHRIES CEMETERY GRAVE MARKINGS JUNE 13, 2015 On Saturday, June 13, fourteen uniformed Compatriots of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution were joined by six other Compatriots from other chapters throughout Kentucky to honor three Revolutionary War Patriots buried in the historic Humphries Cemetery in rural Trigg County. The group endured stifling heat with some measure of comfort thanks to the Goodwin Funeral Home in Cadiz which provided two funeral tents to shelter attendees. The Patriots honored in the ceremony, some of the earliest burials in the cemetery, were Jesse Wall of North Carolina and his sons-in-law, Capt. Thomas Humphries of the Virginia Continental Line and Amherst County Militia, and Pvt. Absalom Humphries of the South Carolina Militia. The Humphries men were brothers and married the two daughters of Jesse and Susanna Shipp Wall. Jesse Wall rendered Patriotic Service by swearing the Oath of Allegiance to North Carolina in early 1779, as evidenced by his being appointed an officer of the local court in his father's probate proceedings. The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter has invested approximately one hundred man-hours of labor over the past several months to help locate and restore lost tombstones, remove brush and vegetation around the immediate area of the Patriot graves, and place SAR "Patriot" granite markers on the graves. Saturday's ceremony was the culmination of those efforts. Approximately eighty people, including approximately two dozen direct-line descendants, were in attendance. Direct descendants John Humphries and George Humphries each received the Veteran's Administration Casket Flags for their ancestors. Highlights of the event included biographical tributes, delivered by descendant and Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter member John Humphries, the presentation of flowers and wreaths, a military flag folding ceremony, a three-shot black powder musket and rifle salute, and the playing of Taps. In addition to the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter, wreaths were presented by the Lt. Robert Moseley Chapter SAR from Owensboro, the Lafayette Chapter SAR from Lexington, and the Gov. Isaac Shelby Chapter from Shelbyville. Daughters of the American Revolution chapters presenting wreaths included the James Thomas Chapter from Cadiz and the Gen. John Caldwell Chapter from Princeton. 7 COMPATRIOTS ATTEND GRAVE MARKINGS OF COOMES PATRIOTS IN DAVIESS COUNTY JUNE 6, 2015 Steve Mallory, Geoff Baggett, and new recruit Steve Francis took a road trip to a rural community in Daviess County to join the Lt. Robert Moseley Chapter as it hosted the grave marking for patriots William Coomes, Sr., William Coomes, Jr., and Walter Coomes. The elder William Coomes, father of the other two, is buried in the cemetery where the marking was held. His sons are buried somewhere in Kentucky in unmarked graves. Geoff Baggett played the drum and led the group in singing, Steve Francis assisted in the folding of the American Flag, and Steve Mallory served in the rifle salute. Baggett and Francis presented the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter wreath. All three men earned credit for three grave markings toward the Patriot Grave Marking Medal. PAGE 7
8 GEN. GEORGE ROGERS CLARK GRAVE MARKING NATIONAL COLOR GUARD EVENT JUNE 27, 2015 The Kentucky Society hosted a special grave marking ceremony during the recent 125th NSSAR Congress in Louisville. The event was held at Locust Grove, the home of the sister of George Rogers Clark, and the place where he died. He was originally buried in the family cemetery on the property, then his remains were re-interred at the Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville. There is still a grave marker for General Clark in the Locust Grove Cemetery, so the KYSSAR took the opportunity to hold a special service in his honor as a prelude to the 125th Congress. Since President-General Lindsey Brock was present, the event was a National Color Guard Event, eligible to be counted by participants toward the Silver Color Guard Medal. Three members of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter were in attendance. Geoff Baggett carried a flag in the color guard, led the invocation, and took part in leading the music. Eddie Price carried a flag and helped lead music. Steve Mallory served as the escort for President-General Brock and fired in the rifle salute. Here are photos from the event, which included firing a canon as part of the salute! PAGE 8
