1 DEPARTMENT OF MISSOURI DAUGHTERS OF UNION VETERANS OF THE CIVIL WAR Dianne Scheffing, President Auber Drive, Manchester, MO GENERAL ORDERS #1 SERIES SEPTEMBER 2013 Dear Sisters, I want to thank you for the honor of serving as Missouri Department President during the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War. I would like to congradulate Marilyn Freeman for a most enjoyable and successful 2013 convention. It was wonderful to have our National President Carole Morton at the Department Convention. The tour to the Macon Historical Center was most enjoyable. I also enjoyed the guest speaker during the Memorial Banquet, Tom Rafiner who shared with us the story behind General Order #13 which displaced many Missouri families during the Civil War. While I have been Department President for only few months, I have been very busy with events around and outside of Missouri. On June 29th I attended the grand opening of the Missouri Civil War Museum at Jefferson Barracks located in St. Louis, MO. The director of the Museum, Mark Trout, gave a tour of the muesum and showed a movie of how the building was renovated from the former Officer s Club building that has been standing since the early 1800 s. I attended the 2013 National Convention in Lincoln, Nebraska from July 31 st August 4 th. I traveled with Phyllis Freeman, National Council Member to the convention. Also attending were, Elna Williams, Missouri Department Treasurer, Marylin Freeman, Past Department President and Ann Freeman, State Owned Veterans Homes/Hospital & Delegate at Large. It was an enjoyable time as we spent almost a week in downtown Lincoln and were a block away from the Nebraska Cornhusters football stadium. We also spent time sight seeing around the Historic Haymarket area. We met several members from other states while we were there. A major event that happened during the convention was the re-election of National President Carole Morton. This hadn t been done in 100 years. You will find a report from Ann Freeman in this issue and I wanted to thank her for taking great notes and creating the report for us. Finally on August 31 st, I traveled to Independence, MO to charter our new Missouri tent, Louisa Volker Macklind Tent #24 of Kansas City. I can t tell you how great it is to have a new tent in the Missouri Department. I wish them all the best and much success as they begin their journey. In closing, I look forward to visting all the tents in the Missouri Department and look forward to hearing all the exciting news and events from them throughout the year. In Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty, Dianne Scheffing Missouri Department President

This series contains the original applications and re-admissions for the Missouri Veterans Home (St. James). Almost all early applications are missing up to #1300. As such, it is an incomplete list of residents at the home. However, information on early residents can be found in the partially indexed series Inmate Registers. After #1300, only an occasional application is missing in this series.

7 The DUVCW donation will be used to digitize the applications through Application #2180 (1929). This portion of the collection corresponds to the Register books that have already been placed on Missouri Digital Heritage ( h/default.asp?coll=movethome ).
