1 NARROWS BRIDGE VFW NEWS VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS OF THE UNITED STATES NARROWS BRIDGE POST & AUXILIARY VOLUME 70, ISSUE 5 May, 2018 Commander s Message Dear Comrades Our next Post Meeting will be on, May 2 nd, at 1900 hours. There will be a pot luck before that at 1800 hours. We will have our installation of Officers at this meeting. Thanks to all those who took a position in the post. At our last meeting, Ned Vukovich, received his award from State Commander, John Bradburn, for being 100 years old. This award was from the National Commander thanking Ned for his service to his Country, and his longevity. Good for you Ned! Rae Jones and I attended the District Meeting on the 15 th of April. Our Post received an award from the State Commander for being 100% on recruitment. I thank all of you that helped out on achieving this. We must continue to recruit more Veterans into our Post and also into the Auxiliary. The more members we have the more we can help our Veterans. Thanks to those who help to keep our Post running. Larry E. Carnes, Commander VFW Post VFW Auxiliary President s Message Our next Post and Auxiliary meetings will be on Wednesday, May 2 nd with a potluck at 6:00. Bring some goodies (anything is welcome) and join us for some visiting with each other before the meeting. Installation of our new Post and Auxiliary officers will be about 6:30 before our meetings begin. Our meetings begin at 7:00. We held elections at our April meetings. Auxiliary officers are: President Percy Wolfe, Sr. VP Stacey Hobson, Jr. VP Marion Sharkey, Sec/Treasurer Toni Martin, Chaplain Lorale Righter, Conductress Tilinda Grote, Guard Gary Graber, Patriotic Instructor Carol Gore and Trustees Pat Freeberg, Debbie DeAlba and Laurie Elliott. Thank you members, for agreeing to take on these positions. It is going to be another banner year for us here at Our Chaplain sends out cards for various occasions - - sympathy, get well, thinking about you and birthday if we know it. To help defray the cost of cards and postage, some of us pay $1 a year on the month of our birthdays. If you think about it, give Lorale a thank you and a pat on the back for a job well done. 3 Dear Comrades: Good Morning: I have three things on my mind today that I would like to share with you. Continuing on with our Newsletter Mail problem; here is our second batch of names: Jim Benoit Merle RK Clapper Rusty Bass Terri Lee Kellan Biando Buddy Keller Donald Engebretson. Some of these names are repeats, so again, I am going to ask Pat to remove them from our mailing list. If you know where they may have moved or what their status may be, let us know and we will update our mailing list. Next up, with sadness, I report to you that our Auxiliary Member Kerry Parish has passed away. I have only known Kerry for the past three years, but she was loved by many of us at VFW Post and she was quite active in helping with many of our activities. She will be missed. Rest in Peace Kerry. 4 CHAPLAIN S CORNER "The pin ball machine syndrome" Several years ago I heard a sermon that still gives me something to think about. A pastor showed a video of a pin ball machine. The machine was complete with a ball that is propelled when a spring loaded mechanism is pulled and released, and then kept in play by manipulating the flippers that are provided. The ball bounces back and forth while it is kept in play until it makes an exit through a slot. After the first pin ball disappears, another is produced so that the entertainment can continue. After the viewing of the video the pastor said, One of two things is going on in your life; you are either moving toward a higher level in your relationship with God, or you are being played". How are we "played"? We are all played by our own desires. Jeremiah 17:9 "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it"? According to the Bible, we are supposed to resist an unholy trinity; the world, the flesh and the devil. These three entities pose a myriad of subtle deceptions. We, as humans are played against our own emotions and desires. We are also played against each other. Is it really possible to break the "pin ball machine" syndrome? All I know is that we live in a time of increasing confusion. Being a part of the problem seems to become easier as the weeks, months and years go by.. Being a part of the solution is not always a comfortable way to live. It is easy to be "played". Robert Neal Chaplain Thanks to everyone for showing your love and support to Kerry Parish s family. 5 AMERICANISM Well our rain is back as I type this (at least it isn't snow), My weeping cherry tree has bloomed and flowers are planted in the flower beds. I am going to begin cleaning our Memorial Park off of 6th Avenue on Saturday, May 26th at 2 p.m. The more help I get, the faster it goes. I have been doing this for years. We like it to look nice for Memorial Day. Dates to remember to fly your flag: Mother's Day May 13th (Sunday) Memorial Day Service at the Memorial Park on 6th Avenue May 28th at 11 a.m Memorial Day Services at Mt. View Cemetery May 28th at 2 p.m. (colors need to be there at 1:30 p.m.). It would be nice if you attend to wear your uniforms or hats to show the audience that we are there. I write a report each month showing community activities and hospital information as required for us to maintain our non-profit status. Due to many of our senior citizens.myself included can no longer participate. I m asking all of you to send me all your info. My r-mail is silentrae@q.com Any volunteering hours-miles you do. And money donated, please send the information to me. I only received 2 s last month. I know many people volunteer at the local hospitals, send me the hours.miles driven and any money or items donated! It all counts. I have accepted the position for ONE MORE YEAR. Since 2007, BURGER KING franchisees and their customers have contributed over $5 million to the VFW s Unmet Needs program, which since its inception in 2004, has provided assistance to more than 8,600 veterans/military families experiencing unexpected financial difficulties. On May 19th, demonstrate your appreciation by purchasing a BK meal. Proudly wear your VFW cap and let BK management know that the VFW is there to support BURGER KING, as they, in turn, have supported our Unmet Needs program. CANTEEN NEWS On May 28 th, Memorial Day, there will be a service at the War Memorial Park at 11:00 AM. There will be a shuttle van from the upper parking lot to take people down to the park. Also, the Canteen will provide a free luch from 12 2 PM Also, new Monday Night Baseball special in the canteen is: a hotdog, bag of peanuts and 12 oz. cup of Hamms beer for $4.00 And, don t forget the meat raffles held the first and third Fridays of each month at 7:00 pm.
