New DAR member Keitha Callanan, pictured above, participated in the ceremony for the first time as she rendered honors on behalf of her DAR chapter. 2 A P R I L / M A Y What s Going On? January to April 2014 have been very busy months for many members of our chapter. The 233 rd Anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens Mecklenburg chapter members attended the 233rd Anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens during frigid 25- degree temperatures and brisk winds. Mecklenburg chapter members Jim Wood, Dave Alls, Ray Maxson, Ken Luckey, Neil Hohmann, Tom Phlegar and Jay Joyce participated in the Color Guard. January 18, 2014 The 233 rd Anniversary of Cowan s Ford The Mecklenburg chapter sponsored the 233rd Anniversary of the Battle of Cowan's Ford at Hopewell Presbyterian in Huntersville, NC. Representatives from the SAR, DAR, SR, Children of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of XVIII Century and descendants of General William Lee Davidson participated in the day's ceremonies. February 20, 2014 Our chapter's second annual President's Day Community Dinner was held tonight with an excited audience of 170 people. "The large majority of the 170 audience members were non-sar members of all ages," said Tom Phlegar, chapter programming chairman. "We had 8-year-old Cub Scouts, college-aged youth and adults of all ages in attendance to enjoy a wonderful evening of early American history, dinner and community spirit." Following dinner, George Washington took the stage for the evening's main feature. Mr. Washington spoke of his youth, his service in the guard at any early age, his service as commanding general during the Revolutionary War, and his eventual service as our nation's first president of the United States. "Professional historic actor Kevin Grantz portrayed Mr. Washington and he was absolutely brilliant," said Phlegar. "His portrayal of Washington remained in character from the very moment we introduced him until the last guest had left after the event." Mr. Washington was asking the scouts about their service to the community.

4 F O R G O T T E N P A T R I O T S H O N O R E D March 16, 2014 The NCSSAR hosted a ceremony honoring fourteen Forgotten Revolutionary War Patriots of the North Harlowe community by dedicating a memorial marker at the Harlowe- Havelock Senior Center in Havelock, NC. Families of Free Persons of Color before the American Revolution populated the Harlowe communities of Craven and Carteret Counties. (In the photo at right, Mecklenburg chapter member Paul Callanan, on right, commands the Color Guard during the ceremony for the 14 Forgotten Patriots of Color in Havelock, NC.) These families furnished at least fourteen of their men to fight for the cause of Liberty throughout the Revolution, said NCSSAR President Jim Wood. They fought from the battles around New York and New Jersey in the early part of the War, through Valley Forge, where the American Army was truly born, the battles in Pennsylvania, both sieges of Charleston, and the battles of the Southern Campaigns that ended the War. O RWINTER G 2016 Upcoming Events April April 2014 Join our chapter for a very special 2-day genealogy workshop during the annual Scottish Festival at Rural Hill in Mooresville, NC! We will have a special tent on the parade grounds and will be talking with prospective new chapter members. Contact Jay Joyce for details at April 2014 The 238 th anniversary celebration of the Adoption of the Halifax Resolves begins at 2:00pm in Halifax, NC. Please contact Steve Avent at savent917@gmail.com for more information April 2014 The NCSSAR Annual Meeting will be held this year in Fayetteville, NC. The le Marquis de Lafayette chapter welcomes all NCSSAR compatriots to the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Fayetteville. On Saturday, April 26, there will be two free training seminars: What are the jobs of the chapter officers, particularly the president and secretary?, and, How do you fill out a SAR application form correctly?. The Youth Awards will be held on Saturday at lunch and the annual meeting begins immediately following lunch. The actual annual business meeting is free and open to all SAR members. May May 2014 Our chapter is co-sponsoring a grave marking ceremony for Patriot Lewis John Jetton beginning at 10:00am at Centre Presbyterian Church in Mooresville, NC. Everybody is invited. Come be a part of history as you witness the reading of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, hear cannons fired and walk 1 block to the cemetery to honor those Patriots buried. 31 May 2014 The 234 th annual commemoration of the Battle of Buford s Massacre will begin at 10:00am near Buford, SC, about 9 miles east of Lancaster on SC Highway 522.
