Hebrews 6:19 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Daughters, you are to be commended on your efforts of marking the graves of 1812 personnel. As you locate the graves, many times the cemetery has been neglected and requires a clean-up which gets the descendants involved. In some instances family reunions develop after a marking. It was an honor to participate on August 20, 2016 in the rededication of three War of 1812 soldiers graves at the Forks of the Pigeon Church Cemetery in Sevierville, Tennessee. The graves of Major James P. H. Porter, Private Benjamin Catlett, and Private Richard Catlett were marked. Following the ceremony it was my pleasure to meet with the members of Thomas Ogle Chapter at the King Family Branch of the Sevier County Public Library. On September 18, 2016 the Old Hickory-Nickajack Chapter marked the grave of Major Samuel Turrentine at Old Crowell Chapel Cemetery in Halls Mill, Tennessee in Bedford County. It was so encouraging to see the descendants bring their genealogical research to the marking as they add to their family tree. Not only are you accomplishing our Society's goal of marking the graves, but bringing families together. 2 This is the second year of a three year State Librarian project "Every Hero has a Story" for the series of books the State Librarian, Sherry Taylor has presented to each of our twelve chapters. The focus for this year children's library book is entitled "The Star Spangled Banner". Your creative way to introduce this book to schools by reading it to children is important because at this time in our society there are those who choose to be disrespectful of our flag. Educating our children of the War of 1812 and respect for our flag should always be our priority. Please continue to honor our Veterans in special ways. On September 10, 2016 this officer assisted in presenting 32 Vietnam Veterans pins and certificates to honor the l69th Engineering Battalion for their service, sacrifice and valor. The State Council is fast approaching... Friday, March 3, 2017 at the Double Tree Hotel in Murfreesboro. We are hoping for an outstanding number of members to attend since our President National, Lynn Schulman, will be our guest speaker at the luncheon. You will receive more details of the event later in the Call Letter. Linda Tripp State President GOOD NEWS!! At the meeting in October, National approved the Tennessee state pin which may be worn on the official ribbon. The pin is being manufactured by Pamela Wright and we will give you additional information when they arrive after Christmas. 2

3 The Crockett s Forge Seat Chapter Star-Spangled Banner Day Celebration at Page High School On September 9, 2016, State Representative Glen Casada presented a State resolution that was passed by the legislature and signed by Governor Bill Haslam proclaiming September 14, 2016 to be celebrated across the State of Tennessee as Spar-Spangled Banner Day. Dr. Shane Pantall, Principal, accepted the proclamation so it may be displayed proudly at Page High School, home of the Patriots, for all to see and remember. National Society United States Daughters of 1812 State President, Mrs. Linda Tripp, Mr. David Eagan (General Society War of 1812 National District Deputy President General), Mrs. Emily Townes (President Crockett s Forge Seat Chapter USD 1812), and Crockett s Forge Seat Chapter members, were present in celebrating this event. 9 Our Chapters In Action Tulip Grove Chapter Presents ROTC Award Tulip Grove Chapter past president Aline Roberts presented the chapter ROTC award to Cadet Daniel C. Bell from Olaton, Ky at the University of Tennessee-Martin office. Bell was selected for his outstanding qualities of good Academic standing and patriotism, moral character, dependability and adherence to military discipline and leadership. Also on hand for the presentation was Lowell E. Howard, Jr. Lt. Colonel, U.S. Army, Professor of Military Science UT Martin.
